Very clean and balanced proportions. However,dull and bland,it won't turn heads for sure. Interior is of just another level. It has Scandinavian purity and ergonomics. The stance should be more pronounced,more striking,more dramatic. First sight I wouldn't reckon it as an E class,but more like B or grown up A class. Hardly you can make a statement with this car.
@@eleonik76 The B-Class is a minivan and there is an SUV in the lineup, dude. There is no way you can confuse this E-Class SEDAN for a B-Class MINIVAN.

It's obvious from the overwhelming majority of readers, and myself, that the new facelift looks like shit. I think even though you are trying to be independent, the manufacturer relationship is weighing heavily on your reviews because you didn't give any of the feedback that we all observed. Trying to stay on the good side of Mercedes.
I would argue in this, you are actually hurting even Mercedes, because they need to hear the feedback of people like you and me to stay successful in the future. For now I thank god that I got the 2019 E-Coupe, otherwise I wouldn't even be considering Mercedes with this "facelift" or interior steering wheel/trims or even the headlight revamp. The only thing that looks better is the Speaker on the side-mirror interior that screws out.

This generic design would be appropriate for the A limousine. The E-Klasse deserves a more iconic appearance that is recognizable on it's own and stands the test of time..
MB is like audi or bmw. you cant differ between the models. all look the same. what a shame
you'll recognize it with its signature yellowish paint, oh and the Taxi roof sign 😂
I think MB is trying to get us to spring for the extra $20K to get a stripper small engine S Class

Do you know what happens if you take the average proportions of human faces? You end up with a very beautiful face. I think the same could apply to car design. Not saying it is the case here, but it is a theory.

It’s just because the a class sedan came before the e class, that you associate it with the a class .. trust me it looks amazing in person and it’s a step back to the old e class design
My friend there is nothing wrong with the looks of this car. I don't understand why people always criticise the looks of every updated car. Probably the pre facelift also suffered the same criticisms.

It doesn’t look luxurious enough, looks rather minimalist, the headlights so like some you’d find on some Toyota. It just lacks CHARACTER
Traditionally Mercedes sedans have always been rather subdued. Look at W123, W124, W212. IMO this facelift is better than the original, except for the interior.
That's a bit of an insult to Toyota. The Corolla has much cooler looking headlights!
And the front grill look pretty cheap in the base trim model. Mercedes is going backward in the style department.

What I like about Mercedes is that they always seem to follow their own path. They don’t copy trends or take cues from other designs or companies like many automakers. They stay true to their own evolution and direction. I think their new designs are outstanding.

The only thing I don't understand is the design change of the rear.
Before the face lift the tail lights of the E class were pretty unique and elegant to look at.
Why did Mercedes change them for some generic looking ones that almost every other brand has too ?

@@mart_en Lol. You need to go back and check. Literally everyone complained how bland it was and said it no longer looks like an E Class. They really didn't take too well to it. Now look. The facelift looks much better especially the back.

I thought car design hit the bottom with BMW's grill....but Mercedes has topped it, with BMW at least you can point out what's ugly. This car....is just ugly overall.
The head designer brags about taking body lines off until the car looks like a bar of soap...I get he likes simplicity but the cars look so boring and too soft...also they are trying hard to get rid of the Mercedes star hood ornament, it’s hidden in the exclusive package and most don’t opt that. And in the UK they don’t even have that option.
Wait until you see the new S-Class... the leaks look horrendous

Many people complain about the rear, but they keep forgetting that W110, W111, W112, W113, W100, W108, W114, W115, W116, R/C 107, W123, W126, W201 and R129 also had horizontal rear lights and no one complained. The front is mediocre, I agree about that. Also when are the fake exhaust police going to arrest some liars?
It's not about the design principle, it's the execution that Mercedes messed up

Another great review Thomas. I think it's a little bit of a problem, that the last E-Class that really looked more elegant and it was more desirable than the then competition, was W124 (1984-95). And it was only available with the classic grill and the star standing on the bonnet.. a monument of german auto industry. (in this, even the classic grill looks like a MB chinese imitation - plus: we all know what the gap in 23:38 resembles..LOL)
Man, the E class use to have such presence and elegance, this looks like trash. As generic as they come.

Informative.Appreciate the comparisons to the driving experience of competing models. But it looks so boring! And yes, I agree that the vintage cars are so pretty and distinctive. Seriously thinking of getting something like that for weekends.
Technologically it is super car, interior super, but outside really not attractive in any design variant of new E.

Very amusing & entertaining Review. 3:30 excellent! 6:45 also enjoyed another German lesson. Base suspension perhaps ok for smooth Vegas tarmac, but what about usual torn up, cart track city and back roads in UK! Typical "options options options" for Air Suspension. Capacitive buttons, err... Nice bright interior of your test car. Shame PHEV lost luggage space. Thanks for the details Thomas.

Great review/walkthrough, unfortunately the Mercedes design studio forgot to make the E-Class look striking. I miss the quad-headlight faces.
I had one of those W212 pre facelifts and it grew on me, it was different. But I think you can't make an E class that half of people just hate. I'll agree that many people won't even be able to distinguish a W212 facelift from a W213 or even a W205. But on the other hand, that's what it used to be in the 80s and 90s.

It looks more elegant. To me, It also looks a bit more like an Audi. Perhaps that’s why I like this design more and some Mercedes fans dislike it. I don‘t get the touch button concept either - why invest so much money to complicate things? „If it ain‘t broken, don‘t fix it“

It saves money! Just like the 2015 C-Class Climate control in that E-Class etc. It would cost a lot to make a custom climate control.

Autogefühl if you are still before the test of 5-series - it would be great to show the standard instrument cluster display settings (if possible).
I think what I miss most about the E class or any other model for that matter is...Just how beautiful the fabulous Palomino tan interiors with the dashboard covered in the lovely walnut woods! Throw in a matching wood steering wheel and I'd buy that right now.

nevarran just checked out the AMG version and it all makes sense now. Mercedes does not want anybody to buy this car. they purposely made this ugly to steer people to the AMG variant!
I love the white interior. So stylish. But I've never had a car with such, so I have no idea how hard it would be to clean it :)

This is just like how we did not like BMW's grill when it was first seen.
This trim looks awful, the AMG line models on the other hand, along with the e63s have grown on me, much better looking IMO.
It's the other way round for me. I hate the AMG stuff, but I really like the exclusive trim, especially the dark wood and beige leather. The only good thing about the AMG line imo is the steering wheel.

I love the 2019 e class and this looks even better! Very comfortable and classic styling. Everything on the e class feels well build, it is a proper car

Thomas, a wonderful review as usual. Cam angles in the car are great especially the one looking through the windshield. it’s like we’re sitting in the car with you traveling through the countryside and villages. Although the E Class has less tech and simplified interior than the S Class, the E Class is not a good looking vehicle. There’s no class/elegance. The rear end looks like a Corolla. The M-B 250 you mention is so much classier. 2 year old M-B look better than the new ugly look. My 1990 300SE with faded paint looks better and loves the road. Keep rocking Thomas. Peace.

Hello. I would like your comments on the following points. Changes in the interior, besides the steering wheel : removal of the analog clock (why ? it is a good idea ? doesn't it create an unwelcome hole in the dashboard), removal of the rotating knob on the central console. Removal of sparkling details in the rear lights. Also on 4MATIC vs rear wheel drive on non AMG versions : is it worthwhile in our regions ? W hat are exactly the improvements in the multi-beam LED vs pre restyling. In line 6 3.0L vs the pre restyling V6 in the E450 4MATIC. I would indeed be very interested in a Full Review of the All Terrain Station Wagon E450 4MATIC. Thanks for your great comprehensive reviews.
This past Saturday I test drove a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E350 in the United States. Only choice available now is the standard suspension in the USA which is the lowered Sport Suspension. Air Suspension is optional. MBUSA cancelled the Luxury line model which comes with the Softer suspension steel spring setup. The E350 I test drove was an absolute disappointment in terms of ride quality, noise, and vibrations felt through the chassis. This E350 came with 245/45/18" tires/rims. There's way too much of a nervous feeling coming through the suspension and steering. Taking the car on the local brick roads, the suspension couldn't keep up with wheel control causing the suspension to feel very harsh over small imperfections. It just felt as if they took a big step back in refinement for what the E-class used to have back from the 90's up to the previous model until 2016. I currently have a 2018 BMW G30 540i and when compared to the E-class I test drove, it is much better as a Luxury car which feels solid. The current E350 does not. Mercedes-Benz should offer to us in the USA market what a Benz used to feel like even in the entry standard model, not enforcing us to have to get an optional Air Suspension to make this car ride acceptable for its price of $61k+.
Why pay so much for A class?

I left Mercedes-Benz after 18 years of ownership so can talk with a lot of experience, owing 3 E Classes in the process. Removing the double DRLs was a big mistake. You might as well buy a C Class.

Truth is it’s a non-pro design, or get wasted last night but still need to get to work on 8am, this it what could be. thanks for that logo, those led lights, that high standard painting and assemble quality, saved that not very good design a bit 😷
