    The 308 GTI is Peugeot's entry to the hot hatch battle, it's quick with 270PS and wrapped up in a fairly discrete package albeit with added sporty red touches, upgraded brakes and new wheels. How does the entry from Peugeot Sport compete though in an already very busy market for small and fun hatchbacks?

      I had a rumbling sound coming from the LSD when on full lock, that was last summer .Car went in twice they confirmed it was the LSD I'm still waiting for them to call to fix it . I called every other week got peugeot main office involved even got a external company to put pressure but nothing . Really disgusting service. I'm sure it was a simple fix but it shows your so called warranty is worthy nothing . I bought 3 brand new cars from the dealership and haven't had a service call for them which is strange as I still have the 3008.

      @mdc123-v2v Před 6 lety +2

      It's not a stigma, they have topped the list of most unreliable autos for the last two-decades. They also lose heavily on depreciation. 30k for this is a joke as less than £1,500 - £2,000 gets you in Golf R and Cupra territory, both of which provide better driving dynamics, interior, and all around value.

    • @Wise91000
      @Wise91000 Před 6 lety +8

      Martin Crutchley The only thing I partly agree on is depreciation. Newer Peugeots, yes. However, The old Peugeot 205 GTI is the same price an an old Golf GTI if not more. The 306 GTI-6/ Rallye is £3k upwards now. As I say newer Peugeots are awful in depreciation but not all.

      Damien Guy No-one in their right mind would choose a FWD over a 4WD like the 308 with less power, less grip and none of the premium spec. The new Hyundai beats this on price also.

    Brakes are class leading
    Mechanical diff just works like a dream
    It sticks to the road like fly to shit
    Massive boot
    The front seats are just the most comfy like a chair really
    Full HID lights means absolute vision and on full beam its like rally car style👍
    Up to 47mpg average...well more like 37 but still very good
    BUTs....
    On uk very shit surface roads it does get a bit too noisey at times 19s inch alloys!!!
    The info system restarted 3 times in 2 days!!!
    The fake engine roar on sport mode its just no..just no BUT its only 1.6 and it makes it sounds like 2 litre and bigger...
    THATS IT...only if i have 28k for car this 308gti would be on the list for sure...just for the pure shocked faces of the other drivers when you just leave them in your dust....
    Ps: the brakes are REALLY in the class of its own...i did emergency braking test and my eyes where dancing on the dash😂😂😂

    I have had a few 205 GTIs and currently own a 1989 1.6 205 GTI (wich is the best one to own btw due to the interior design of that year, the better looking smaller Speedline wheels and the XU5JA engine), and I think this 308 GTI comes closest to that old one. The original is super sensitive, fast when you drive alone but slower with even one passenger due to added weight, super small steering wheel, unassisted of course, no electric windows or electric nothing, no A/C, no seat warmers, no nothing. There is nothing to do but drive, and that's what makes it so great. Exterior vice there is just a small spoiler on top of the hatch and small wheel arch extensions, and of course the GTI logo in the back. Nothing crazy, just driving joy.
    I think they tried to catch that feeling of just having fun in a small fun hatchback with this one.

      @EricAndThe Před 6 lety

      Scratch i guess some could argur that, I just think the little increase in horsepower doesn't really matter in a car like that, I like the gear-ratio in the 1.6-versions more and rhe smaller engine revs better. That's why I say the 1989 1.6 is the best, because it has the XU5JA-engine, 1.6 block with 1.9 cylinder heads, so it gets the best of both worlds, better and more fun revving with s little extra HP.
      At least in here a lot of rally guys in the 80's and the 90's paired the 1.9 engine with the 1.6 gearbox, tho.

    I have today next to one of these. The salesman was telling me that it is a car that in some years from now could gain some value as the 1.6 petrol engine will soon get out of production due to EU emission law and a 1.5 engine will replace this one. And because it is about to hapen, Peugeot will not build many of them. Here in Portugal it cost 40 thousand something euros. It had just arrived and they did not have the price yet. It is a car to compete with the Hyundai i30 N and others of course. I personally would go for the i30.
    This guy has massive front disc brakes. They are huge. You can tell it is a very well put together car. It is worth the money.

    • @Danlewis85
      @Danlewis85 Před 6 lety

      Sorry but doesn't hold a candle to a fiesta ST, it's plain and simple, the fiesta chassis is superior in every way. I had the ST previously and now a 208 Gti BPS and I can't wait to be rid of it. It's a solid, well made car with plenty of power and grip (too much grip actually on the Michelin tyres) but man it's just dead to drive and no fun, for a car of this nature there is zero engine noise and I mean zero . Complete opposite of the ST which sounds great all through the rev range and fills you with excitement.
      The inside however is superior to the current and outgoing ST in terms of quality and I love the small steering wheel ( which is the only thing I will miss on this car) its actually a very nice space to be in but how it makes me feel behind the wheel...meh . Ford have nothing to worry about in terms of competition at this price range particularly with the new ST coming out soon, which is completely overhauled inside and out and I'd seriously go for that when it's out ( from drive the deal.com as you get thousands off them which offsets their depreciation which is pretty bad with ford generally) or the current one, not a gti BPS .
      Plus in the gti the automatic wipers reset every time you start the car which is really annoying as you can't just set and forget plus the auto headlights are a major annoyance as the light sensor is way too sensitive. If so much as a cloud passes over the lights come on. I'm actually quite disappointed with it after 9 months with it. I can't describe how much more of a drivers car the ST is and how much more connected to the road and car you feel in one of them over the 208
      I don't personally know what the 308 in this video is like, it could be totally different but if you use the 208 as a frame of reference and extrapolate out then I think you'd have to be bonkers to spend 30k on one when you could have and RS or Golf R. As usual a great video from Shmee, I'd much rather watch his content than what the BBC gives us. There's actually useful information to be had

    • @mattyschofield6766
      @mattyschofield6766 Před 6 lety

      Daniel Phillips I agree with you the fiesta is the better drivers car with the better chassis but I think the two cars are for totally different audiences. Yeah the engine noise/exhaust noise in the normal 208 is pretty non existent but I'm sure the bps version has some exterior exhaust sound with a slightly different exhaust set up and don't forget the fiesta has the sound sent into the cabin through the speakers to help it along which the 208 does not that's probably the major difference you notice and yes the wipers and lights are super annoying don't get me wrong I've already noticed that. Why don't you try a tmsr2 induction kit to try help with the sound you're missing out on? Apparently it also adds 30nm and 10bhp from 3000 revs or so I'm very tempted to order one for my gti because I'm getting sick of the no noise myself and it's only been 4 weeks 😆

    • @MrBanaan1
      @MrBanaan1 Před 6 lety

      The 208gti 30th might not be the best in it's class, but I'd still be interested to see someone like Tim (with more experience than us) have a go in it and compare it to others.
      Furthermore it's a matter of taste. I don't own a 30th, nor am I a big fan, but I do like the car. It's got plenty of umpf, and for the price it's nice. Like I said, it's a lot more special than an ST imo. Both nice cars nevertheless.

    Peugeot is a superb manufacturer. Good attitude as a company toward making ever-improving, practical and feature-packed cars. And the most user-friendly interiors. Not even luxury German manufacturers are considerate enough to give the driver an ADJUSTABLE arm rest. Like all drivers are the same height.

      Panoramic sunroofs. Ergonomic seats. Heads up displays. Individually adjustable passenger seats. Auto-folding wing mirrors. Arm-rests! They were giving these features as standard way before anyone else was. Whilst Vauxhall and Ford still don't! Just look at how feature packed the latest models are like 5008 at such low prices. Things you don't even get on $50k+ luxury cars.

    Tim.... This or fiesta ST with the MT230 kit you reviewed some while back?? Slightly different class but still interested in your view, i own an ST and a 500hp sub 1350kg Toy for the weekends ... The hot hatch is my DD, my household wont be without a hot hatch, they are imo the best , most complete all rounders, the Fiesta ST is a benchmark for the smaller cars, I'm looking at moving up a class, and now the new i30N has just been released , the megan's Rs is about to be released with RWS, I'm really not sure.. or do i keep my little ST and do the MT kit and save a small fortune. My fiesta ST just feels so right, everything the requires FEEL, the pedals, the steering, the gear shift just feel so right for such a cheap vehicle. The reviews on the 308GTI are very good and i hear the engine although only a 1,6 is of a truly nice construction, fully forged done properly.

    Why do you seem so surprised? Just because its a Peugeot? Like you said, Peugeot have been doing Gti cars for years! The only reason cars like this and the Hyundai i30 N struggle even at £28k is that they'll be worth less than half that after 3 years which is a shame.
