- New district, new classroom, new grade level!
I love the idea of a fresh space, but it can be overwhelming! Especially when there's so much to clear out from previous teachers. Here's the recap from days 1 & 2:
-Saw my new space
-moved out any furniture/decor I didn't want from previous teacher
-Came up with a new design for my classroom
-Moved big furniture into the hallway so it can be added once floors have been waxed
Day 3 & 4 are coming shortly! What are you most curious to see as I set up my new room? :)

It can be overwhelming. What I do usually is before school starts, sometimes before school ends when I find out I'm in a new room, I go to the room and just sit there. I take pictures 360°. And sometimes I just sit there lights on or off and "dwell". That's what I call it. I look around the room. I breathe. I think about what I need to do in that room. What the children are going to be expected to do. I look for things that have high accessibility and visibility, but low distractibility. (I learned that from a classroom management class once.) Then I look at all the furniture. I take all my information home and make a plan.
Usually around Memorial Day weekend, I buy a new composition book. I put tabs on the edges and label them. The first 5 to 10 pages are materials. What do I need to buy to create my vision? How and where will I acquire them? I price check and budget.
The next 10 or so pages is floor plans. I take the information that I got from my "dwelling"and I sketch out where things can go. I draft out bulletin boards, word walls, etc.
Then about 20 to 30 pages, I have for ideas. I think about things that I want to do. I think about things I've learned looking on the internet. I think about just ideas.
My next tab is curriculum. Depending on what I'm teaching, I will write out what the curriculum is. What kinds of things I can use to make it accessible for the kids, and to make it fun for them. I list out field trips I might want to go to.
On the next 20-30 pages I will start making anchor charts. I sketched them out. Sometimes I make my own, and sometimes I Google them.
Then in the back it's just whatever else doesn't fit in those other spaces I write ideas or whatever. That makes it less overwhelming if I can write it out. I'm a woman of faith, so I think about the Bible a lot. There's a verse that says "Write the vision, make it plain. That's kind of what I'm trying to do. I hope that helps.
I’m late but the small cubbies could be for headphones…stem bins…would say water bottles if they don’t leak sideways.
Such a cool classroom space! When I was in high school, my art room had a huge column in it, and when we graduated we all got to sign it/paint a little design on it, and it became such a rite of passage. One thing you could do with the posts/columns in your room is a sort of spin on what I had, but you could wrap them in string/fairy lights and put clothespins around them, and your kids can attach kind words/messages to them, or maybe you could put photos of them up throughout the year? Somehow make it a collage of memories from the year and then you can take it down and reuse it every year. Can't wait to see how your room turns out!
I hope they cleaned and waxed your floor for you :) lots of interesting columns - straight and slanted! As a teacher I could totally tell the work that’s already been done in 2 days :) can’t wait to watch the rest!
The shelf with the small cubbies is definitely made for shoes lol but you could use it for extra student supplies if they each have like a big bag of them. And the gray shelf is for leveled readers or magazine storage, reminds me of a book fair display
The columns everywhere would be so challenging. But I LOVE the brick!
Such a unique classroom, can’t wait to see it come to life!
I was hoping that you would use that space for your library, it’s perfect! I really like the unique aspects of your classroom.
I love these videos! They’re so satisfying :) Teacher here from Washington!
Make a list and make a labels and lakeshore and Amazon wish list for your new classroom
This is a really awesome space!
Coming from a 90’s kid, I’m pretty sure that metal rack is a cd shelf 😂
Send some of that chart paper my way!!!
Keep all the charge paper!!!!! I guess I'm a hoarder lol!
I'm pretty sure the little shelf thing is a display for bottled drinks. We have one that holds 1L Smart Water.
Could you maybe use the shoebox organizer for your papers still….and just roll them up a bit and put them in each cubby?
Maybe use the shoebox looking thing to separate supplies? Like their headphones?
Enjoy!!!
Students could store their water bottles in the cubby/mailbox!
Try and keep the crates. You can organize supplies in there
Did you move schools?
That is my teacher. I can’t believe she has a CZcams channel
