The Utrecht Canal Pride is a festive LGBT event that has been held in the city of Utrecht since 2017 . It takes place annually in June and includes a boat parade on the Oudegracht , followed by several street parties in Utrecht's city centre.
The Utrecht Canal Pride was first held on June 17, 2017 and was also the start of the annual Midzomergracht festival . The Pride was an initiative of the owner of gay café Kalff, after his boat could no longer participate in the Canal Parade of the Amsterdam Gay Pride after four years . He then decided to organize his own boat parade in Utrecht without commercial participants. This first Utrecht parade consisted of 25 boats and attracted about 20,000 visitors.
After the success of the first Utrecht Canal Pride, the event took place for the second time on June 16, 2018. This time 41 boats took part, preceded by a group of canoes so that small organizations could also participate. A first was a boat with intersex people. In addition, polyamory and the former gay disco De Roze Wolk were also represented. Afterwards there were street parties at four locations in the city centre.
On June 1, 2019, the third edition of the Utrecht Canal Pride took place, this time for the first time as an independent event, separate from the Midzomergracht festival that was held later that month. 48 boats took part in the parade, which was watched by several tens of thousands of visitors.
The fourth edition of the Utrecht Canal Pride was to take place on June 6, 2020. Due to the corona pandemic , it was decided on March 19 to stop preparations for the festival and to cancel the 2020 edition.
