  • A bit of a ramble on all of the lovely systems we draw upon when reading tarot cards, I hope my musings can offer some inspiration or food for thought in readings of your own 😄 What are your thoughts on the various symbolism and correspondences we tend to connect to the cards? Much love and well wishes to you all ❤️

For me, this is what the hanged man represents. Seeing the bs, coupled with the ingenuity of it all. He turns the Hierophant's teachings on its head for a new perspective, and he realizes the teachings are more of a way to find safety in a world of duality that can feel disconnected from our collective Oneness. In being punished/ostracized by the community, he learns from Nature and what it truly means to feel safe within, as an individual, and as a freethinker.
I do believe the correspondences have a magical quality, especially when many people come together and see shared archetypal energy within them. I struggle with the appropriation of teachings coupled with suppremacy over the cultures they were taken from. That said, even false teachings, unethically sourced, point to something within, something with which those teachings resonate. The true teacher (storyteller) is always within.
I feel very Temperance about the reconciliation of the two. Humans are imperfect conduits for the divine, and so only imperfect Truth can come through things like assigned correspondences. Pathworking with imperfect correspondences will still lead us back to Truth, which is understood through the personal mystical experience- which can only be imperfectly expressed. The expression isn't Truth, but it points to Truth.
Re: reconciliation of mentioned appropriation, I think, where correspondences are drawn from spiritual schools of thought, with respectful cultural exchange, the teachings can be incorporated. And I also believe in moving forward and updating teachings to fit the contemporary experience, and like you, look for holes that maybe reflect more the consciousness of the time. I am careful not to toss the baby out with the bathwater, because there is value in all perspectives, but moving forward, we should constantly strive to do so ethically and always question and examine the filters (teachers) through which these teachings reached the pages of books we admire.

A very great point to bring up! So many facets to consider when looking to any symbolism and it's greater meaning, I appreciate your perspective on this 😄 Modern systems drawing from Egyptian mythology, christian and jewish mysticism, western European pagan elements, etc. ... there really are quite an amalgamation of cultures and beliefs packed within the RWS and Thoth to be considered. Many thanks for bringing this conversation into the mix, best wishes your way friend 💚💚✨

Good video regarding to use or not use correspondences. Both can be done, but of course, generating different results. For my part, I am so thankful to be able to have access to wealth of fruitful sources such as Crowley's Liber 777, Dr. Robert Wang, Qabalistic Tarot, Dr.Stephen Skinner, Complete Magician's Tables, amongst others resources! Yet, I feel Tarot knowledge must be sought at a deeper level, in conjunction with our genuine will toward our ever spiritual self-development.

Great video James! :-) I'm a big fan of Enrique Enriquez. His book did so much to bring me back to tarot in a period when I was getting ready to finally let go of it after so many years of being unhappy with occult correspondences that all seemed like ineffective intellectual hogwash to me (not saying they are, just that they feel that way very often). Whereas, with EE's approach, there's a kind of playfulness, a meticulous interaction with the imagery, what's on the card, rather than what it accidentally maybe corresponds to in a school of thought. I'm currently taking Camelia Elias' playing card course based on similar ideas, only coming from European cunning folk reading methods and it's just fascinating. Much more entertaining and much more precise than anything I got from using all the highbrow esoteric correspondences.

I feel like so far I fluctuate between using correspondences or not depending on the deck, as well as the type of reading I'm doing. That being said, I feel like the only way I've been able to get a comfortable grasp on reading court cards during these first 2 years of learning is through the use of astrological correspondences, so I suppose I can also say, it depends on which cards I draw as well lol.
I do agree that correspondences beyond numerological and elemental associations feel mostly useless for more practical readings and daily draws (although sometimes a correspondence may intuitively jump into my brain), but whenever I'm studying or doing readings for myself that are more "deep" and spiritual, or shadowy, I feel like the correspondences matter a bit more. But it is true that sometimes trying to incorporate too many correspondences can seem like a whole reach and can muddy things up.
I think my overall opinion on this is that learning correspondences (and even creating a few of your own if that's your thing) can really help with studying the tarot and adding to one's intuitive arsenal in terms of knowledge to draw from, but when it comes down to doing the actual readings in practice, I personally draw much more from what I see and feel and hear in my head voice, and the only correspondes I think I use consistently in every reading for the sake of grounding them are numbers and elements (with the exception of court cards where I lean heavily on astrology), which to me is what gives the tarot its backbone (whereas the deck used, and the reader's intuition and personal reading style are the muscle/meat).
Great video, I always enjoy hearing your nuanced perspective on these topics! 😄

I struggle with correspondences. Even numbers in all kinds of numerology systems don’t match with my own use of numbers.
And if I see one more egg, pomegranate, pelican, Hebrew letter, Goetic symbol or seal in a card I am going to scream my head off. Also I never used astrology in doing readings yet people are often pleasantly surprised with what I “see”.
😬 Personally… I don’t understand (yet) the offered or supposed depth one should or could get when knowing and understanding all these ideas and symbols…

I find myself naturally feeling like I need to be all in and pick between believing correspondences are brilliant or bullshit rather than being okay with just playing and flowing around in the gray but this was a great reminder that all things don't need to be reconciled.

Great one, James. I've been reading for a couple decades and I'm at the point where I just tell a story based on my ingrained understanding of the cards. I think of each card almost like a word in a sentence. So I try to "articulate" each word and then account for the aggregate meaning of the words together. When I was very young, I studied Waite's _Pictorial Key_ along with PF Case's _Tarot_ (on the esoteric meanings of the Majors). That was a good way to start. But there was a point where all of that just faded into the background. As a reference for comparing the art of various decks and some of the hidden symbols, I sometimes look at Hulse's _Key of it All: Western Mysteries_. But otherwise, I do something more like a "folk" reading. So I definitely resonate with what you're pointing out here about "sacred bullshit." Keep up the excellent work!

Just clicked play and already a thumbs up just for this title 😂. P.S. Okay I’m done now and I loved this video. I agree and love that we can use the cards with as much or as little “correspondence” to anything outside of the card’s exact imagery that we find to be valid and applicable to our own understanding of life and our own stories. I also relate to the usefulness of the structure of various systems (both of Tarot itself and whatever other systems we correlate it to), and how taking away that structure could leave us feeling a bit unsupported. I think this is why many people find religion helpful, and I certainly benefitted from learning and leaning into the structure within the Tarot (suits + major arcana) long after I no longer held any organized religion as “THE truth.” There’s so much more I could say if I had time. I’ll just say thanks for the video. I found it to be all brilliant with no b.s. 😉

The universe was created with numbers and sacred geometry our birth charts are maps encoded by numbers. Our DNA runs by numbers.the playing cards that look so simple are a calendaring system based on the 365 days of the year to give meaning to our characters on the day were born. The tarot and playing cards are the legacy that our ancient ancestors left to bring us to a point of intellect they were conjucting with at the time. Man did not create numbers, it was released into our intelligence' remember that the ancient sumerians already had a numbering system complete with star maps and music sheets. Oh James... you should take a look at my content.
I focus on the astrological correspondences within the tarot. It has greatly shifted my tarot practice.

But I have to disagree about the BS factor of the correspondences. Many study these aspects and apply it in different ways. Either as a separate part of their practice or in the tarot.

For instance, someone who is versed in Kabbalah and works with the tarot can create a different perspective when doing readings. The same with any other deck that may include alchemical, tree of life, astrological, etc. references.
I don’t see any BS with any of those concepts within the tarot.
Yes, all of the tarot and their influences are open to interpretation and that I feel is important when working with the tarot. . 👍🌙🌹✨

Seeing you relax in your element is such a beautiful thing to watch. I believe we are all of two minds. I think correspondences allow a beautiful balance in them that allows our intuition to come into play by finding the mundane in them. On the other hand, I have harsh realizations that lead me to believe it was all just a story tale I told myself to cope. For me, it goes back to the idea of the placebo effect. And if I'm being completely honest, who gives a shit as long as the bullshit makes sense and works for you? 😘

Great video. I think viewing correspondences as another layer you can use if you want rather than as a requirement is freeing. I agree they're something someone made up, maybe someone better read and who's thought about it more than I have...
One example for me recently was the Ogham correspondences in the Celtic Wisdom Tarot.
A few years ago I'd linked up Ogham meanings with Tarot archetypes to help me learn them and they were not in order at all. Only two matched up with the Celtic Wisdom version. And while i totally acknowledge that writer probably spent longer in it than i did, who is to say one is right and one wrong... if corredpondences help, they help. If not i think they're optional.

So interesting James - this was a great video. You mention a documentary I believe; I was wondering if you could post a link for that or what it was called again if poss? I think I find learning and reading about correspondences to be really expansive and helpful for deriving nuanced meanings in readings but I do still feel that whatever art on each card of the deck that I choose to use for any given meaning does still inform and enhance that reading further for me in an intuitive way. I do believe there is a reason why I reach for a certain deck at any given time for that reason. Historical context, symbolism and correspondences will always be an area that I will continue to study and examine. This was such a great discussion; I can feel this is going to start some wonderful dialogues within the community! Thanks so much 💓 🙏

Thank you for this video James! I agree, I can see it both ways too. I’ve recently started studying the Thoth and it has helped me to see the value of correspondences, while at the same time I don’t think I will use them with my other decks and I am a bit bothered by how constructed they feel, because sometimes things don’t fit that nicely. At the same time I think that in general we can decide to apply certain principles to the tarot and leave out others, even when they might not be considered a correspondence. For example, I don’t work with female and male energies in my spiritual practice so I also don’t use that for the tarot. How we the reader go about this may be different, but we all do so from a place of spirituality. For me it is the universe and my spirit guides. If we believe in the what we do, then that is all we can ever ask, books can give us so much, but it’s you the human who feels it. I am 59 this year and I have never stop believing. Blessings David

The Golden Dawn made all the esoteric stuff up. All of it (along with the 19th century French occultists). This is why TdM fans who read like Camelia Elias or Enriquez say to just ignore meanings and just read the cards.
These days I veer heavily towards pure intuition even when reading decks like the RWS. The meanings only provide an occasional flavouring.
Reading tarot intuitively ties more into a Magick perspective, especially if you believe in the collective unconscious.
Do you need the Qabalah? No
    Do you need astrology? No
    Do you need numerology? No

hahaha this video was really cool! it called to mind that principle of polarity that Wang talks about in his book-- where everything is dual and I think that applies here in that it really has to be both? We can't say there's no correspondence or that there is (an objective) correspondence or that it's all intuition or no intuition, really. Hehe It's always both and I think intuition comes into play when choosing or contextualizing the applicable meaning.
