Great playset! I love how much 'playability' they created with such a simple material as printed carton and a few plastic parts..

I've still got my Palitoy one! It's seen better days, but it's complete and still looks good. Pity I didn't keep the box, though. A classic piece of Toy design by Bob Brechin, inventive and reasonably priced for the time. An iconic piece of childhood memory!

Best Xmas ever in '78 getting this Death Star, X-Wing & Landspeeder - wish I had kept hold of all my vinntage Star Wars stuff in hindsight.

I got this one when i was kid. I don't know how many hours i've played with.

I can't imagine how incredible this must have been to play with in the 70's.

That's amazing! I love the artwork they used to create the feel of the movie. The mirrored floor giving the impression of an infinite drop is genius. I had the Palitoy Action Force headquarters, which is basically the same set with different artwork, sadly it disintegrated and it got thrown away 😢 Great video, thanks for sharing 👍 😊

I've seen Palitoy Death Star, but not Toltoys version. I had a chance a couple of years ago to buy the Palitoy Death Star for $450.00...but it would have become evidence for justifiable homicide in the trial for why my wife had to kill me.
I really like the colors on this version. They stand out really well.

Well done on such a great summary of this awesome playset. We have sold a number of these over the years it’s probably the fastest selling SW piece we ever have in stock, they don’t hang around. 👍

Thank you! Yeah, these are so hard to find in decent condition, I'm sure they go fast!

I so wanted one of these when I was 9 years old. They were not sold for long here in the UK. By the time ESB came out the Palitoy Death Star was withdrawn from sale.

We made the cardboard version at Palitoy because of the price of plastic in the 70s due to the oil crisis. Better design by far.

I remember having one of these as a child and it was the Toltoys one too. Ours was missing the guner station but we never really missed it not being there. Wish I still had it.

I misread that as Tolstoy’s Deathstar. Considering he died in 1910, that would be a collectors item.

Wow, memories. I had this. I acquired this from a school friend, swapped it for something, a large bag of marbles or something like that. Played with it to death. The gun turret broke first then it just fell to bits from wear. ☹️

I like this one better, my buddy had the original back in the day and i remember we rarely played with it, but this is pretty exciting looking, I think we'd have used it more. The more i look at this the more id love to get a scan to cut out of wood on a laser cutter. Great find

I found the scan of this playset in a fan website. Then I print out and made a small playset.

I had this as a kid....bought it at a jumble sale..(indoor yard sale for you americans). Long gone as it was cardboard.

Where is the room where R2 and C-3PO hung out? They had to have that room.

Better than the plastic Death Star

  • @joemestric

As a child I had no interest in this item. In Australia most of the vehicles and playsets were over priced. Individual figures were around $1.50. The Death Star was $25 for a cardboard box full of cardboard.

Wouldn't it do Hasbro some good to redo some playsets like this using thicker cardboard? Not only would collectors buy them but they would be bought by parents who aren't going to shell out close to a $100 for a fancy diorama piece with no play value Everybody wins.

I'm trying to put one these together. It is a replica I bought off of eBay a few months ago. Do the tabs for the floors from one side of the wall fit in the same slot as the tabs of the floor on the other side of the wall? In other words, do they overlap in the same slot? I'm having a hard time getting them to do this.

    • @thekennercollector
      @thekennercollector  Před 3 měsíci

One part of one of the floors needs to be folded perpendicular to the rest of the floor and then you fit it in of that makes sense!

why is nobody with a 3d printer remaking this with plastics panels instead of cardboard
