We appreciate the mention, even if you did stumble a bit... ;) I like the large destruction area and the slick plate before the grizzly. Looks like it should do a good job. I've been planning on doing something similar in a smaller, 12v configuration.
Thanks for a great video. I'm building an 8x16 crash box to turn my 8 inch wide sluice into a mini high banker. I like the simplicity of your approach and will use many of these ideas in my own build.
Thanks John for a job well done, and a well done video. I really like all your attention to detail, and that you were not stingy with your instructions (as so many others are), upon how you built it, and providing the information for others to build it. You can tell by your video that you are proud of your accomplishment, and would like to share it with others. Once again Thanks John for a job well done. - (P.S., I live in Southern Idaho).
Old Prospector Hi, I’m Mike Welch and I am moving to Meridian, Idaho late next spring. I’m looking for a gold prospecting partner. If you are interested, send me an email to: dudley.welch@icloud.com. (I fabricate and invent stuff!) (I just dreamt up a fantastic hand-pump yesterday that would produce LOTS of material quickly compared to the Mothersucker style pumps.
This is what I like to see more of... "DIY" projects in gold prospecting equipment. with complete dimensions and/or materials used etc.. I'm not saying that places like "Gold Hog" and others out there aren't producers of excellent quality equipment, or along with most local prospecting and mining supplies merchants etc., don't carry excellent equipment quality because they are, and they do, and I highly salute them, and give them all many praises, for all of their excellent quality products that they build, or carry as dealers for purchase. I'm not trying to step on any toes, or offend any of those manufacturers, or dealers, in any way. So if you can afford to buy those items at their prices, then by all means do so, because you will have a quality product that will last you for years. But in most cases, the pricing of their products are "Way Above" what the everyday average amateur recreational prospector's can afford, especially the beginners, or those who are now retired, and just want something to do to get them out of the house, and keep them busy. In most cases those types of people are on Low Income, and after the bills are paid, and the cost of monthly living is taken care of, there is never enough left to purchase such (or those), items at those high prices. However if they are any type of handy man, and have simple tools, and the ingenuity, and with some modifications, then they can build such items at a fraction of the cost with ordinary materials, purchased at a whole lot lower price, at the nearest hardware store, and still not infringe upon copywrite protections, especially if they don't try to market it commercially for personal gain, but only build it as a one (time), item piece of equipment for their own personal use. (in all three cases like me, Low Income, Retired and a handyman (I've always been a "MacGyver" type of person)).
Hi John just wanted to let you know I followed your advice and built my own dredge highbanker combo out of parts and pieces I had from other units including an old stop sign LOL thank you for all the help!
Those big orange "Be prepared to stop" signs are aluminum as well and standard size is 48x48 I know a lot of people acquire them for floors and body panels on their hot rods
Yes a great design John thanks. Just like Kam White below me my design is very similar as I too have researched on CZcams. I like the fact that yours is aluminum and light for easy transport from the truck to the river. my box however is a steel box already available at Home Depot for $50. I'll be adding my videos later this year as I'm heading out to British Columbia from Alberta next week for a few weeks. Good luck everyone.
great video mate I am from the UK and have been looking for a cheap way to build a high banker instead of paying a fortune in.inport charges and the actual cost of one all I need to do is in port the goldhog matting now will be keeping an eye out for more of your videos on here thanks a lot mate
John love the home built idea. You talk and have mannerisms just like Doc at Gold Hog. I'd swear you are him in these videos, except younger and not living in Georgia, the subtitles are even in the same manner. Love the videos and can't wait to try rigging a high banker myself. Keep up the Great work and maybe some lessons from your brother too.
fine looking machine, for this summer i intend on building something of similar design using plastic containers on a wood frame. i will put together numerous frames left at some honey holes and make the hopper out of a deep plastic storage container and the sluices out of two 4' x 2' 6" high plastic storage containers. i will make 4 of the sluice boxes, twice what i need so i can keep working while my lady cleans out the last set. the good thing about leaving the frames on site and only carrying the 5 containers will be that they are light and stackable and easy to move from one hotspot to the next, plus they can be replaced easy and cheap
Thanks for posting I'm gathering ideas on how to build one and I'm impressed by this design because in others even those built by companies for small sluices, it looks like the rocks get washed out too quickly but in this the dirt will get a good churn around before escaping. Also it's not particularly complex to build. Hopefully you've found enough gold for it to pay for itself, and more!
Hi John very nice build.Love your choice of matts.Mine is home built also a little different but along the same lines.I am only 9 inch wide and 34inch of matt.I have about 14 inch of slick before the matt so 48 incnh overall I ran 2 units in tandem for some time.very seldom ever found gold in the second. So gave that up waste of time.I do keep my angle down to 1 inch per foot and find that works the best and 2 folks can shovel all day.Play with it luck Mark.
+mcbain mcbain Thank Mcbain. I hope you find lots of gold with your highbanker. Nothing like building something from scratch and seeing the results! I also have a video about a mid-sized, lightweight, highbanker that I built. I love it. Easier to pack around, but still able to run lots of volume. Cheers!
The material distributor is the business where you can buy metal stock. Many of them have bending and cutting equipment, and can cut the aluminum to the dimensions you want. In my city, the business is called Gateway Materials. I would just Google "aluminum stock" or "metal cutting" for your area. Also, you can buy online from various sites. Hope this helps.
Excellent video, John. gave me some good ideas for my build. i think i'll stick more to the GoldHog Piglet design, however. for sure will use GH mats. After watching Doc's "scientific" videos and his explanation of why his mats work so well I'm sold. have you tried his new Talon mats?
I would like to add. I live in Calgary Alberta Canada. I go prospecting in British Columbia every summer. This year my old prospecting partner decided to retire he's 65 and can't handle the terrain anymore so now I have to go alone which is not very safe in the wilderness. I am now looking for a new energetic prospector to maybe link up with. Anyone interested feel free to contact me as adventures are better when shared with like-mined folks I have some videos on CZcams too, check them out to see me and check back later in the year when I'll have more up. Happy hunting guys.
Nice job John! Your voice sounds just like Don Felder from the Eagles(watch an interview of him on CZcams). You may also try a 12" or 18" wide Gold Well Vortex Sluice put on the end of yours to see if your losing any micro gold smaller than -100 mesh. Yes a Popandson expanded metal(3 sizes) and miners moss sluice is VERY good for -100 mesh gold but complex to make one. That IS what I want, a Gold Hog Raptor Flare 2.0 highbanker with a 18" Gold Well sluice put on the end. Running with a Honda WH-20, 2" high pressure pump. I do not think the Angus MacKirk 14" or 16" Commercial sluice would help recovery of -100 mesh that the Gold Hog missed. IMO the 2 best clean-up sluices are Gold Hog's 8" multi sluice and Gold Wells 6" one. I owned the Gold Cube and did not like it for several reasons(not enough time right now to tell you). What sluice do you use for clean-up and then finishing to clean gold.?
I think you got just about the perfect design at the best price. Only thing I would do different is make the hopper 8 inch high instead of 12 inch. And put some wings on the top to make it wider for those of us with a bad shovel aim.
hi there John wanted to say I am going to make my own high banker since I can do piece by piece and since it don't need to be made till next summer I can work on mine in am and on weekends I love the ideal of it being able to be dismantle so I can pack it all up so question how do u do the claim I want to do one up near Seattle Washington what is the first thing u did and was it much money to do I don't want to kick out thousand of dollars and have no gold in my pocket ... but thanks again for showing the making of ur high banker I don't know any who can spot weld I think that is my biggest problem ..I don't think u could email me back by change to talk about me buying a grid spited welding from u is there
About 5-6 hours is what I get out of my batteries. I always take two with me camping. I have one on my charger and charging when I'm running my generator.
John, Putting together a similar design, and will run only 12v. Do you think I would be better off with a higher flow bilge pump (maybe 2000-3000 gph? with a ball valve) with higher amperage, or two lesser bilge pumps (1000 gph) with low amperage, Y-ing together into 2" hose before they dump into the hopper? Trying to balance needed flow and my battery life.
thank you John ! i have all ways wanted to visit and fish and prospect on the clearwater . i have spent a lot of time on the Salmon fishing and doing amateur prospecting . I have a lot of questions . where did you get your elect, pump ? i have 2 1000, gph . that i got at harbor frt. but haven't seen one that big . Thanks !
I got it on ebay. Just type in 3700gph 12v pump and they'll pop up. I prefer Rule pumps, but they are kinda spendy. There are some less expensive China pumps on there also. I think Johnson Pumps make a 4000 gph pump and they are pretty well made also.
I really like the setup John I myself bought the 10 sluice blank and hopper setup and as you said its very well made but in the same I don't care much for the grizzly bar setup as I was constantly having to shove rocks off. So I am building a hopper based off of the gold hog monster hog and yours. Now what I was wondering was on your brackets that attach to the sluice and then the hopper did you trim the matting and place the brackets at the very bottom of the sluice? hard to tell in video so thought i would ask.
Au_Prospector 4life Hey Au! Yes I placed the brackets to the very bottom of the sluice. I just trimmed the matting to slide into that narrower-width area. Good luck with your sluice. I'd love to see the finished product! Thanks.
HEY MAN! 1st off. Thanks for sharing your video. That's gotta be scary with all the critic's out there? Question that I've had about high bankers? With the supports for the upper end of the wash box/classifier connecting just to the sluice. And not running on down past to the ground? Can you tell or maybe notice if when a shovel load of material is throwin in the hopper (see I remembered? LOL!) If it flexes or bounces to where it could knock the gold loose and roll out the end? And another question? How about bowing after a while of use and time? It looks rugged and stout! My compliments! I was just wondering? Cause I'm about to build my 1 st one so? Or what would you have done differently?
Great video: I am just finishing my own highbanker. One of the last items is the 1/8 punch plate. Any tips on where to buy a small section of punch plate???
I bought mine at a local materials distribution store. They sell all sorts of metal material; fabrication; cut to size; etc. You can also buy it on ebay. I'd like to see your end product! Thanks
I sealed it with a bead of silicone chalking along each joint face where metal to metal contact was made. You'll need a rivet gun, the appropriate sized rivets (I used 1/4"); a drill with the appropriate sized bit (I used 1/4"). Hope that helps.
John, I looked for the legs you used for this build on the black cat mining website and can't find them. Have I overlooked them or have they stopped selling these? Curious, as I could use a set of those legs.
www.blackcatmining.com/mining-equipment/jobe-sluice-stand.cfm Semper. Here's a link for the legs. If you google "sluice box stand, or legs" it'll bring up a list of different stores to buy them from. Enjoy!
Wes Roberts Wes, I use UR, Razorback, and Scrubber. They come in 36" wide lengths. I cut them to fit the width of the sluice box (12"). They hook together in a tongue/groove type manner. I put them together using super glue in the tongue and groove area and gorilla tape underneath. They have videos on the Gold Hog website that show how to do this in detail. As far as keeping the mats in place in the sluice box, I show how I do this at about 12:27 of the video. I have a header bar (1" aluminum strip) that is held at the top of the sluice bed by two 1-1/2" bolts and wing nuts. I also notched that portion of the matting to fit around the bolts. I just slide the mat under the bar and cinch down the wing nuts. I hope this helps.
Great design John. I'm making one and I visioned it much like this after doing all my youtube watching research same as you did before making yours. It's real nice. My goal is to make it without spending a dime, just using scrap materials, but I'm getting pretty close, just using metal shelving and other metals and hinges and grizzly type stuff. I haven't figured out any ideas on saving money for the legs yet but the rest is almost covered. I appreciate your design. I want to only spend money at the Home Depot on PVC pipe, and gold hog matting. Which did you use here? The scrubber, razorback or UR? Also, why did you go with a wide mouth design for your water input rather than the PVC pipe that makes a o ring around the top and has the sprayers. That's how I imagined it and have seen some using that and in comparison it seems to me that us cleans out the hopper better, but perhaps yours creates a stronger overall flow? What's your thoughts?
Thanks Kam. I can't wait to see your build. I used UR under the header and then alternated Scrubber and Razorback through the remainder of the sluice. I went with the large volume PVC inlet for the sprayer design to get a churning action in the header. It helps suspend material in the header longer so that clays can be broken up better. It works great for me, but your's may be a better design. John
Kam, I plan to use 1/2" electrical EMT galvanized conduit for legs and attach them with 1/2" single screw hole electrical brackets. The 2 hole brackets are way too thin to drill and tap. I'll drill and tap the bracket to hold a 10-32 thumb screw. I expect it will cost me less than $20 for 4 legs, excluding drill and tap hardware. OK, a little heavier, but so what?
+theBald1 I purchased the material from a metal distributor in my area. They cut the box peices to the size I wanted and bent the sluice to the dimensions. Like Jeff said...actually, quite inexpensive. Sure beats buying a highbanker for $1000.
John Jacobs and thank you also for the quick response.. Lol.. I'm actually on the road now heading to my local metal shop to purchase a 4 x 10 sheet.. $162
You said that the grizzly opening is 8" 12" wide and 18" long , before you said the box was 24 " long, if you put and 8" inch opening in the bottom and then had 18" long left that would be 26" I think you ment 16" long which = 24" as you stated in the box design. Am I right on this or not ????
Christopher Melvin Its a location on the Clearwater River where we prospect. Just a name we gave it because its near my grandmother and grandfather's homestead site.
Great! Have fun with your build. Hopefully, you'll be able to post a video. Also, I have a video on building a mid-sized highbanker. They both work great. Good luck!
Ok..... I now see another idea. You put your water intake higher then grizzley. Will have to toy with that idea. That's something that has bothered me.
Yeah. I also mounted the back of the header box on 2" x 4" x 1/8" thick aluminum to keep the grizzly higher than the back splash of the sluice. You have to do that so that the grizzly doesn't hit the backsplash when you tilt the header box to the desired angle.
We appreciate the mention, even if you did stumble a bit... ;)
I like the large destruction area and the slick plate before the grizzly. Looks like it should do a good job. I've been planning on doing something similar in a smaller, 12v configuration.

elgatodelnoche from TNet here. I love the build. You did real well. Thanks for posting the video.
Nice looking highbanker!
Almost done with mine! Thanks John for the great explanation, saved some good money and gained some skills i didnt know i had.
That is awesome! I'd love to see it in action!

Hi John just wanted to let you know I followed your advice and built my own dredge highbanker combo out of parts and pieces I had from other units including an old stop sign LOL thank you for all the help!

that's more than i thought it would be . grate thanks for your help !
Great show and build thanks

Thank you, I love the video, very well done, I appreciate all the details. This is how you do it. Take care.

I really like the setup John I myself bought the 10 sluice blank and hopper setup and as you said its very well made but in the same I don't care much for the grizzly bar setup as I was constantly having to shove rocks off.
Thanks.

A minor observation; You mounted the legs 90° from the bed surface rather than approximately perpendicularly with the ground. Nice build, tho.
The punch plate that you have at the top of the box... What is the angle on that?
About 9 degrees
When you say material distributor, Not sure what you mean. Can you give me a example of the one you used.
Hello Sir. How did you seal the joints where it's riveted? And what do I need to rivet it?
I sealed it with a bead of silicone chalking along each joint face where metal to metal contact was made. You'll need a rivet gun, the appropriate sized rivets (I used 1/4"); a drill with the appropriate sized bit (I used 1/4"). Hope that helps.
John, I looked for the legs you used for this build on the black cat mining website and can't find them. Have I overlooked them or have they stopped selling these? Curious, as I could use a set of those legs.

Semper. Here's a link for the legs. If you google "sluice box stand, or legs" it'll bring up a list of different stores to buy them from. Enjoy!
"Total cost: $240 please don't tell my wife." Thanks funny :D
You don't menchen the pitch,% ext, also Doo you sell them, Doo you have plans, thanks kb
we need a elec high banker what do yo think buckets hurt
Where did you get the may and how much did it cost you for that size sluice box?
can anyone tell me how deep the header box is and the sluice box ? it looks really deep!!!??
The header box is 14" deep. The sluice is 3.5" deep. Thanks
Where do you get the brackets for the legs?
I bought the legs and brackets through BlackCatMining website. Thanks
Hey John, Im new at this, just wondering how your gold matting is held in? i see you have a couple different types going down the sluice.
Thanks
Wes
I hope this helps.
awesome, thanks!!
Good
Where did you get the punch plate?
I got it off eBay. 1/4" hole punch plate. Thx.
John
Well I could definitely see the advantage to that. Thanks and I'll keep you posted on the progress
Interesting..
Where do you buy the aluminum from?
***** wow that's cheap.. I never thought about going there and looking.. And I have one nearby.. Thanks for the response
Updates?
Is that just v rub matting?
No. It's Gold Hog matting. UR, Scrubber and Razerback.
You are correct.
Are you building one? If so, good luck and happy prospecting!
Long time John
what is grandmas sluice box?
Christopher Melvin Its a location on the Clearwater River where we prospect. Just a name we gave it because its near my grandmother and grandfather's homestead site.
Oh ok gotcha thanks for the quick reply! Me and my prospecting buddy will be building one of these high bankers very soon thanks for the great video!!
Great! Have fun with your build. Hopefully, you'll be able to post a video. Also, I have a video on building a mid-sized highbanker. They both work great. Good luck!
like the videos, just starting out, have other questions, any way to contact? in kootenai county.
If you have the proper water flow, and the correct angle on your sluice why do you need to classify. Isn’t that just a extra expensive addition.
Getting gold with this simmilar
ouch 162 a 4x10 sheet I just paid 20 bucks for two 4x10 sheets of aluminum
Ok it's not the space shuttle, damn...
I was thinking of building one of those also! :)
У папы своя лялька , у мамы своя ! ! !
Кил Валерий Thanks...I think.
You have to do that so that the grizzly doesn't hit the backsplash when you tilt the header box to the desired angle.
way to copy the gold hog destruction chamber
+Gary p Yes I did...I even mentioned that in the video.
hOOpper is too big and heavy.Dont build that its useless
