The pattern you will notice when comparing old maps with new ones: -new maps tend to be way more flat and with less terrain elevation differences. -new maps are way less open with all different kind of stuff (mostly strange looking rocks) preventing long range combat. Personally I prefer the old maps. I like mountains, terrain and open maps :P
Some of the old maps could be decent in today’s version. I do find that Blitz needs more maps. Games are “blitz” style, so when playing you generally see a big portion of the maps. It starts to feel a bit stale playing on the same maps.
I remember the very first version of desert sands when I was playing all those years ago. The problem was however, was that once you got there, if there was anyone going desert, they would see you as soon as you got up there and then you would die instantly. also, this video fails to mention some other versions of maps. but in this instance this map. Wargaming kept accidentally making these amazing camping spots on this map for years until they finally patched them all

I saw his video, soon after getting my ISU.....then went into practice room, and for the life of me could not find that dang spot.......lol...yeah I was a noob On dead rail, there was a high sniping spot around area 4 that had been removed......sk8t showed it in his video ...him using a Pz. Sfl. toaster TD Never found that spot accessible, either
I hate how they removed the elevation diffrences. The maps nowadays are just flat and symmetrical with big rocks all over the place so you are forced to do close range combat. The old maps were very open with mostly long range combat and lots of campers.
@@WEE9 if that's mostly because the more recent maps feel a little small, perhaps maps like ghost factory are pretty big, but other than that most other maps feel really small compared to the old ones (which i believe is a little better, because getting to positions a little later could give you much needed time to do stuff instead of just dying the moment you get to you position)
Only those from 5.5 forward won't realize this. Memories of from before then vague but still there. Matilda and T-28 Russian medium being among the only tanks to pen a Hetzer frontally, so much variety in early tiers, tanks which acted more like TDs than actual tanks, classic FT 17, etc. So much deliciousness to such a once good game. Like how our world used to be (politically speaking of course.)
i miss these i dont even play the game much anymore, i just log on to see whats happening and exit out…this game feels off now, its so simular yet so different. idk if i will ever play it like i used to.
bro I've even forget Mirage ever existed, that's how long it is since they removed it... I do remember Lost Temple tho... and now that they are doing the PBR maps it would be a perfect opportunity to bring those two back again, in a new look... especially Lost Temple would be interesting to see again, esp If you consider they are gonna add japanese heavies soon
Mirage really brings me to the days when I still played the low tiers, those days were really hard to earn new tanks which made me feeling so happy when gradually bought a new one. Ah, good old days 😔😢

Yes the version you are talking about is very similar to the current Oasis palms, the difference was the town was actually the low ground, while the dunes were elevated.
Been playing since release. My first battle ever was on original Rockfield. What a bizarre map it was back then. I remember the days of the crazy sniper hills you could only get to by tricky climbs. There used to be one on the far med corner of Oasis Palms. I remember climbing that thing in my T-18 and lobbing derp shells across the map. Ah, the nostalgia. Desert Sands also used to have some tall sniper hills by the rails where TDs go now. You'd have great shots, but if you got spotted you were toast. I miss the days when you couldn't camp and cap out on Mines. If anyone thinks maps are too corridor-style these days, you should have seen old Winter Malinovka. XD Wish we still had Lost Temple. It was a beautiful map, especially in its last iteration. Some of these maps don't seem like they changed that much when they got updated, like Dead Rail and Copperfield. Others are completely different Overall, I'm happy with the maps we have now. I think they're balanced better and make for more interesting gameplay. But I do miss certain things. And the nostalgia hits like a truck.

Lost temple and Mirage are being reworked indefinately, so they may or may not comeback. They are fixing the maps inorder to make them more balanced and suited for tier 10.

I know im late here but wg made a lot of maps flatter for newer players to handle their tanks easier making it easier to expose weakspots and stuff i actually love the old maps more cuz u kinda actually like go up in a ridge in a angle or poke quickly to shoot someone unlike today that there will just be a random kran sitting in a hill wotb nowadays is just like too easy and wg is the worst at balancing tanks

The old maps were based around the design of Wot PC maps, Canal and Castilla are the only 2 maps left in the game which followed that design criteria.
