Big for an asian elephant, average for african
Because They are the largest asian elephant subspecies
Adult elephants have excellent control of their prehensile trunks, so this one was quite capable of simply taking the food from the hand of the woman offering it. Yet it chose instead to twist the end of its trunk and present the flattened underside, allowing the woman to place the food there. Given the intelligent of elephants I am left wondering if it perhaps picked up on not just the woman's intent, but her hesitancy, her nervousness, and so chose to accept the food in a manner designed to be non-threatening
Interesting observation. I would also say that people generally underestimate the consciousness of other living beings simply because it is different from our own.
What about adult male humans? How would you rate their control of their prehensile trunks?
Yes….I believe you may be correct. ❤

Then the rabbit whips out his phone and take a picture of you
There are a few wild elephants on this Sri Lankan road that behave this way. They are generally NOT a threat. Unfortunately, people have spoiled them by offering food. As a result of that, they associate food with vehicles and are now DEMANDING it from every passing vehicle.
Every vehicle needs a bunch of bananas or sugarcane for safe and hassle-free passage! Consider it as a "protection" toll :))

Ive worked with elephants. She took a big chance. They are the closest animal to humans emotionally that I have ever been around. If it had been having a bad day that women could have ended up dead in a few seconds. Its very hard to judge how they will react and their mood can change in an instant. If you are ever in this situation, do NOT do this.

She might feel brave, and I really envy her. However, if it had gone the wrong way, the elephant would have gotten blamed
The elephant saw the bananas so was smart enough to hang back. All creatures understand about food satisfying hungry
Good point. The sad thing is, they probably would’ve killed the elephant if it harmed her. Elephants are highly intelligent & empathetic creatures, however, they’re wild animals.
Nobody would have blamed the elephant or killed it. That just doesn't happen
Whenever an animal hurts a human, the animal is blamed - and then killed. This happens with pet dogs, tigers, gorillas, chimpanzees, and even elephants. 🐘🐘

That is an old wives tale. They most certainly will attack, BECAUSE THEY ARE WILD. And as such, humans, on foot or in vehicles, should not be feeding them. Just like every other form of wildlife on the planet, they will equate humans to food and begin to act badly. They they are the ones who will pay the price. Remember . . . Couldnt of said that better myself , going from the asian jungle where i was close enough to touch an elephant & indeed had one come and take sugar cane from my hand . To seeing one in a zoo in oz in a comparatively tiny pen chained and rocking was sad . The thais told us when an elephant rocks side to side its stressed , depressed or loosing its mind and thats when theyre dangerous . The poor animal in the zoo was doing exactly that . better than most human males eh?
She is definitely fearless. Believe you me this could have gone completely wrong. It's a wild elephant. Respect their space. She is extremely lucky. As they say. She had all the good intentions. Elephant recognized it.
Elephants are wise and intelligent, they recognize intentions. But people mistakenly believe and think that they are beasts driven by the lust to kill. Anyway, what people don't come up with. They also created myths about gorillas. People, especially civilized people, do not feel nature, do not interact with it, do not correlate, so they have such an opinion. Their unjustified fear, misunderstanding transforms into panic hostility, exaggeration, exaggeration, reluctance and extreme distance. You have to understand nature. The biggest threat is t mothers with calves and young males with testosterone stimulated to aggression. Plus elephants kept in captivity. But people have it that if they don't understand something, they're scared, they're terrified. Just like with spiders. People have much fobies.
It was when she pulled out the camera that I thought the elephant would smack her up side the head - and maybe deserve it for having an agenda behind the giving. Then the smug (truly clueless) grin with her back turned to the elephant made ME want to smack some sense into her!
No doubt she has good intentions.. but that the point.. any reasonably sound mind knows to leave wild animals be and let them enjoy their space.. but one is an idiot this is how good intentions looks like and most of the time it goes wrong.. what do you think will happen if that elephant attacked the women .. it will be put down.. or relocated. All because of some dum f**k has good intentions

Elephants are extremely intelligent animals. While her move was risky, Elephants have the size edge and they know it. They can also sense if the intention was going to be threatening or friendly and it clearly saw and accepted her Bananas gift right from her very hand, a calm reaction from the animal that would have never happened if the Elephant would have seen her as a threat from afar
Extremely intelligent doesn't mean extremely wise... Humans are extremely intelligent aren't they. An elephant may have hundreds a reason to do not like humans, they have an extremely good memory, so even if the woman seems calm and friendly the elephant could crush her if he is not in the good mood, as intelligent he is
What is "the size edge"? I understood your point, but please, learn English.
@Kilo Bacon n Eggs Oh, really? I thought it meant living at the edge of something.
No, Captain Obvious, I'm talking about using the word "edge" in a grammatically correct way. Some correct ways: The elephant has the edge in terms of size / when it comes to size. In size, the elephant has the edge. Elephants have an edge over humans when we consider size.
But, writing such as: "You don't have the intelligence edge." is incorrect. Too much bacon & eggs, perhaps?
I like how the elephant motioned "eating" with his trunk before she actually gave it to him! 1:18, at least that's what it looked like...
@Kilo Bacon n Eggs It isn't, in terms of semantics. I'm not sure you understand the idea of a competitive edge. Taking offence quickly doesn't put one in an advantageous position, therefore the idea of an edge cannot be applied in that context. For instance, in terms of semantics, it's incorrect to say that older humans generally maintain the edge over younger ones in terms of poor health. Thank you for yet another display of your [insert euphemism for idiocy].

Me too, the Bronx Zoo! I was visiting from New England, circa 1962. I distinctly remember being held up to the fence by a relative. The elephant gave me a wet kiss on my face which freaked me out. Decades alter, I would regularly ride an Asian elephant in the opening parade of a circus. I was a performer on the show, 1982-90. Elephants do not belong in circus, I eventually decided. I believe wild animals deserve to live in the wild. I respect elephants enough to know to not approach them, such as this woman did. I have seen elephants go crazy in circus, nothing you want to be be near. When in their territory, one must realize they are trespassing on wild territory, so anything wild could happen.
They have suffered so much at our hands. THey deserve much more respect! Give them

She walked away without looking back, she knew elephant may ask for more bananas 🤣
Reminds me of the thoughtless human beings who confront bison at the national parks.
Big guy was just having a bit of fun with the passing vehicles - when you're that size, you could do a lot worse if you wanted to. Kudos to the woman (it's a wild animal after all) but treats could just encourage them.
He started warming up to her from the distance....the bus and the car passed by and he did not move, and started looking more and more to the woman, she calculated her steps, and finally he welcomed her and took the food. Very nice..she has great confidence in herself...
We, humans are literally living in their space. Over crowding and pushing the limits of the world in which we are supposed to care for. We only have one world 🌎. We must try to create a better environment for the next generation of animals and humans.
Unfortunately human animal stupidy reigns Supreme and add greed and self-serving all in the name of a $1.00 and we will continue to destroy mother earth until she has had enough and she will destroy as she has in the past in an effort to heal from the human leaches.
They are living in our space now. Survival of the fittest. We could off all of them in one day if we wanted. We're the boss, they live or die at our pleasure. Humans rule, not animals! Maybe insects, but not animals.
She's either completely crazy or very very lucky. The bull elephant obviously didn't feel threatened.
