When should you use a keyboard tray? When you have no choice to buy a height adjustable desk or when you have a shallow depth desk you want to extend the space. Mostly, it is for ergonomic reasons in most cases but you might get it and adjust it to the same height just to extend the desktop. Or you could use this as a standing desk modification which is cheaper than buying a fully adjustable desk. You just change the keyboard height but you'll also have to adjust the monitor height as well.

If you chair is adjustable i guess you wouldn’t need to tray
For the best ergonomics, you want your feet flat on the floor in resting position. This fixes the chair height. So if you don't have an adjustable desk, this is one way to make it so that your elbows in resting position is slightly above your work surface.
not at all if you're short, the average desk is way to tall for a 1.6m (5'2") guy like me
