The Perfect Rectangle Watch: JLC Reverso & Cartier Tank?

  • A Discussion around two of the most iconic rectangular watches in the world. The Cartier Tank and Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso are both perfect in their own right. Existing for a century, still remaining relevant with designs that are seen as both timeless and contemporary. Where Cartier favours design and image, Jaeger LeCoultre aims at pushing a minimalistic approach that fuses with their watchmaking technology. The Question is: Which would you choose?

Congratulations! I think I know how good that feels as I got my new Duoface last year, after swearing at the age of 15 (in 1995) that I would get one. I’d had a Reverso classique 10 years ago but it was a bit small for me, quartz, steel and gold…and in not great condition. I liked it but it wasn’t what I really wanted.

I Would go in terms of the Mechanic behind the watch, for the reverso but i also like the tank. So i would choose a reverso for a daily purpose , and the tank as go out watch. Ik first it Sounds stupid, but you can reverse the jlc and that gives you morer versatility like if you want to wear it more undercover you can reverse it to the blank side of the case

I’m lucky enough to own a Reverso monoface. I’m a fan of art deco and love the streamliner look which the Reverso has in spades. I had the back engraved by JLC and it’s absolutely ‘my watch’. I love the versatility offered by the quick change straps too - they’re expensive but the quality is off the scale. I have the black alligator strap the watch came on and the Casa Faglioni designed brown strap so I can dress it up and dress it down. When I say dress it down, for me that’s with a casual long sleeved shirt - it’s not one for wearing with a t-shirt, at least not for me. I love the uniqueness of it - I’ve never seen someone with a JLC, let alone a Reverso. Great video too!

  • @typebflieger

Mechanically, the reverso wins, but the aesthetic value of the Cartier tank is up there with any watch ever made. It’s hard to ignore: the rich history, uniqueness of the iconic case, crown, and Roman numerals - along with flawless proportions that blend design economy and stylistic flourishes seamlessly. It’s a design that has persisted in many forms as it is timeless. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the relatively chunky-looking Reverso, which looks like a repurposed chunk of the Chrysler building. My vote goes to the Tank, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a Reverso. Love them both for different reasons.

Fascinating as always. For a long time, I would have jumped at the JLC. A model that's aways been on my Radar. The design origin of the Tank is appealing. A few months ago I tried on the Santos for the first time. And I was smitten. I'd been ignorant until that time about its origin. I liked it from afar. I have a passion for space and aviation watches, so I don't know why I'd never known about it. I guess that is the joy about this hobby. Learning all the time. I would happily sport any of them on my wrist.

Great video about two great watch families. I am fortunate enough to own a Reverso and a Tank, although not the classics. The Reverso Squadra Hometime was a Christmas gift to myself in 2009. Quite huge for a Reverso but still elegant enough to wear it with a suit. As a mechanical engineer I do love its flipping mechanism but also how they integrated the GMT function. Whenever I feel the desire to look at the movement I do not even have to strip it off my wrist. Only a Reverso can do that.
Half a year ago I bought the Tank Americaine in medium size. Completely different thing and it is obvious that design is king, while movement and technical details are in the background. I can understand why Andy Warhol never felt the need to wind his Tank. It is just there, a piece of art on the wrist.

Excellent review--as always. I bought a Cartier Santos last year, and chose it over the Tank. It was something of a close call, but ultimately I was swayed by the engineering side of things. Most of the Tank Must collection is quartz, except for the Tank Must XL. The problem with that watch is that it is so big that it seems like a Tank that is trying not to be a Tank. The ideal Tank, in my view, would be a Tank Must in steel, with the large size, but with the mechanical movement that is in the rose gold Tank Louis. I would buy that in a heartbeat. Instead, this year, I am strongly considering getting a Reverso--most likely the small seconds version. So this review was timely for me, and insightful.

From a purely horological point of view, the Reverso is more signifant imo just because JLC is without a doubt the best watch manufacturer in the world. However, the Tank is more than a watch, it is a cultural icon, an item that transcends its actual purpose and just becomes art. You would not lose regardless of the choice, but for me personally nothing beats the elegance of a manual wind Tank Louis in yellow gold.

I wouldn‘t answer one or the other, but a Reverso AND a Tank. The Reverso Duoface to me offers a great value for the money, as you can get 2 different dials. There is so much so chose from when JLC began to offer a second dial or a flip side with the movement visible. Not to forget the 60th… anniversaries watches. And so on…
Regarding the Tank, I find the Francaise so elegant and sophisticated. It picks up design cues from the tanks, but has a bracelet and a crown that is not to big. It is a great everyday watch, although I wished that it would have featured an in house movement. I love the Americaine as well, but not as an everyday watch.
There is quite a variety on affordable Reverso and Tank watches on the market with a decent quality as well.

I wish you nothing but good and positive things in 2022. Excellent comparison video and boy did you drop a difficult question with this one. After a lot of thought I’d go with the JLC. Mainly because of the mechanical aspect and the variety of complications that the Reverso can provide. Would either one be my first pick? No, I like the design and the heritage but they don’t really fit my more casual lifestyle although they also look awesome just wearing jeans and a plain white or black t-shirt. Now I’m really confused 🤔

Many of the accessibly priced Reverso’s are manual wind. I note that the crowns are small. How easy is it to regularly manually wind them? Currently looking at a Americaine but could be swayed by a Reverso.

This video is great. I am planning on buying a JLC Reverso classic Duoface or a Cartier Tank Must X this spring. It is a hard decision and I have not decided yet. The Tank Must XL is much less expensive then the Reverso. The form and the overall feel of the tank is better on my 8.1" wrist. Lower and a little bit wider on the wrist. The Tank is only 9mm high and that is great. The Reverso makes my heart beat faster as a watch geek but the shape and form of this size Large is not as good as the Tank on my wrist. It is also a bit sleeker and higher on the wrist. The Reverso is much more expensive and that makes the Tank Must XL a real value for money and a watch that has it all for me. That dial of the Must XL is beautiful. Both are icons and suitable for business casual and dress up occasions. Both watches are great with a polo shirt and jeans. Difficult! 🙂

I could not agree more, the only thing of mention these two designs have in common is the dial shape. As I'm from an engineering background the choice is likely to be clear. I have the Reverso Duoface small seconds. The reverse dark dial really takes the opposite aesthetic to the front. It is the opposite if the front silvered dial. One uses Arabic numerals, the other uses batons, one uses rectangles for the face (silver) the other uses a round border for the hands and day/night dial. It even goes down to the dial finish, one using a textured guilloche on the inner dial and the other on the outside. A fantastic piece. Having said all that I really want a Cartier Tank at some point. They are both great designs. No clear winner.

Such a great split with colour choices for your Duoface. Still blows me away how you can get a 2-for-1 today and the watch, like us, can change its "mood". Engineers would love the tech that goes into them (me included) The mechanics are amazing... Think what's happened to me is my heart wants the more "arty" Tank. My head would always say Reverso 😆 Tough, tough choice all round... Think it's ideal to just own both 🥃

LeCoultre made movements for Cartier during the early 20th century, which is sort of the inverse of your thought experiment. This collaboration, which Edmond Jaeger brokered, led to the formation of the company known as Jaeger-LeCoultre. Cartier and JLC are two extraordinary companies with intertwined histories in watchmaking, and today both are Richemont brands. You cannot go wrong with either Le Tank or a Reverso. You may end up owning both!

Dunno why, love Cartier but the Reverso doesn't do anything for me.....maybe it's the Roman numerals, look more formal and appropriate for a dress watch - I much prefer the Reverso with batons than Arabics. If I think about a Reverso, I think about a Reverso - a wonderful timepiece, that stood true to itself, to become the icon that it nowadays is. - The Tank however, feels different: Born out of fascination, changed in dimensions and shape with emotions of each era and its stories, it just has something to it, that makes it feel special - no matter which Tank I am thinking about.
The Tank is really worth taking a closer look upon, because it certainly is way more than just one watch. Throughout its history it continued to amaze in so many different forms and colors, over and over again, growing from a contemporary symbol of freedom to a timeless companion of all the different societies that thrived throughout the Tank's existence.
It is almost like it rediscovered itself with every new iteration of its own, whereas the Reverso had its future predetermined by its own being. In a way, it feels like a generational gap between both model families, like one could see within parents and their children, just that here, the roles between the younger and the older ones are changed.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  Před 2 lety +2

Great right? Excellent point about the Story and Narrative. Personally, I feel there's more intimacy and less "purpose" to the tank. So many of our watches today are purpose-built. I've been fortunate to experience some very rare Tanks in precious metals in the past and they just feel different. Very inviting and dynamic (really love the Surrealist term for them) Loved this and thank you for sharing IMX 🥃

Having them both in my collection, it totally depends on your lifestyle and clothing style. People like Reverso more is more watch geek, engineering oriented, interested in movement, and rather casual clothing style so they are okay with Arabic numerals on the face. I like classical, traditional lifestyle, and Roman numeral is def more classic and traditional touch. So even though Reverso's reversing funciton and movement and company history is all cool, it's less classic design than cartier tank, and thus i like cartier tank more. Reverso is just a watch people's watch to whom watch is their "thing" in their life, whereas Cartier tank is watch for non-watch people, such as JFK, Frank Sinatra, Andy Warhole, Princess Diana, and many others to whom watch is not their "thing"

The reverso doesn't give me the idea of a casual clothing style at all, and it doesn't only exist in Arabic numerals...
