This 1986 Corvette with TPI and the 4+3 Manual is the Reason I Love Early C4 Corvettes

- I love the early C4 Corvettes, and yes, I do know they got better as time went on. But the first few years impacted my youthful love for cars, and when the new Corvette came out in 1984, it was like a spaceship compared to the car it replaced. In particular, the way-over-the-top LCD display was like a glimpse into the future, and the lines and look of the car seemed way ahead if its time. In short, I just love these things.

Bill, the kind of guy who doesn't tell you constantly to check out cars and bids.
If a big investment group gave me $34 million, I would tattoo CARS & BIDS on my forehead. 🤑
@@egold2071 I would cut my head off for that kind of scratch.
Bill... the kinda guy who will tell ya to FUCK OFF!!! LOVE IT!
Or quirks and features quirks and features. Then proceed to show you his facial expressions while driving like a fucking octogenarian.
The only reason I still watch Doug, is for the rare or expensive cars he review, I wish it was Bill instead who would do those
As a Certified Old Guy™ I can attest to having my bedroom wall plastered with several red '84 Corvettes when I was 14. Love the C4 generation Vette and I am delighted that they are finally getting the respect that they have long deserved.
I love the C4! The only one that top's it is the new C8. (That I can't afford )
The C4 has always been my favorite vette. I get flack for it but it's what I grew up with and the looks were revolutionary at the time
Yep, I had a big glossy poster of a red C4 Corvette and an Mercedes 500SEC AMG on my bedroom wall at a teenager in the mid 80's. I now have the '83 Mercedes SEC (not an AMG, but close enough) and am currently on the lookout for a nice earlier-series C4; gotta be red though!
I have a Red 87 for sale...
4+3= Nash Trash. Replaced by the ZF around 1990 or thereabouts.
Dalton needs his own channel. It would be great to hear the other side of the story.
No, he doesn’t.
🤣
😂
Is Dalton Bill’s son?
@@billgueltig6136
Um, I don’t think so.
"The vette gets 'em wet!"

Good evening Bill from Ron in Manchester Welcome back!
oh, finally a good 50 min content.
You have a unique CZcams channel. I kind of followed you from the beginning. I'm proud of you you grow your channel you take an interest in with good content. From Clearwater Beach Florida. Mr. Hahn
Bills is back ! I am off to bed but this will be a watch over breakfast tomorrow !!
Those digital cluster look soo much better than modern digital cluster, long live 80-90's lcd display
Ah, nothing's more 'Murica than a USA-1 car with pop-up headlights! And its a proper 49 minute piece; the perfect cure for our mid-week malaise. Thanks Bill!👌
The cars actually came from the factory with a cool looking body colored Corvette cover that followed the contours of the front bumper skin...the owner could remove it if they wanted to mount the front license plate. This car helped start the trend of "I'm too good for a front plate in a state that requires one" 😂
@@brentboswell1294 Ugh I always hated that look, especially on the C5. That plate cutout looked like a flap you could push in to insert a big charger or something.
My Miata was an Ohio car; had two garish holes drilled in the front. I was actually pleased when an ambulance backed into me and scuffed it; they paid for repairing it, and the body shop filled the holes nicely.*
*That's what she said. 😏
That door sound was amazing - it didn’t have the usual GM rattle of the day.
I heard that too!
Was about to say…they were running a tight ship at Bowling Green that day!
Sound editing and dubbing of course !
Amazing ! 😮
I remember that rattle from the 70s, but not the 80s.
Hey Bill. The right side checkered pattern on the emblem is just a sticker. If you peel it off it has the Chevrolet bow tie. Went through the same thing with my 96. Thanks for the great video as always.
These looked so elegantly futuristic when they came out.
Grabbed a 1991 ZR-1 upon moving here to the USA.
Love it.
Glorious.
Cheers Bill.
My 84’ had a 4+3. Replaced it twice but when it was working it was so much fun! Early C4s are SOOOOO under appreciated.
Keep the car with the awesome dash, flip headlights and unique transmission! Don't sweat the small stuff, drive it and enjoy it.
Hey Bill, cheers🥃
Happy Wednesday Bill 🥃
That TPI engine is the prettiest and coolest looking SBC ever made.
This is your best video. Possibly because I have a 1985 C4 Corvette which is Ebony Black over the Graphite leather interior like yours. The Doug Nash 4 speed with the overdrive is awesome . Mine has the overdrive switch on the council which I prefer. The L98 is easy to hop up a little bit as you mentioned. I added the throttle body coolant bypass, the K and N air filter with the performance air flow window, and the throttle body booster kit. This booster kit is like an aluminum butterfly that attaches to the dual intake which directs more air into the throttle body. For around 100.00 and an hour of relatively simple labor, the car has much more torque. This car is as much fun to drive as something three times its price. I love mine.
You can always tell when Bill is REALLY into a car simply by looking at the video length; he'll usually knock over a Prius or an EV in 30-odd minutes, however videos on classic stuff he's passionate about will approach the hour mark. Keep up the great content Bill!
Don’t ever use the P word again!
I have no problem with EVs, I even like some of them, but I would die before I owned a prius pile, or even drove one.
@@patrickflohe7427The new Prius is sexy as all hell. Puts a lot of other cars to shame.
@@LynxStarAuto
Whatever you think & want.
LOLOLOL
I always thought the C4 was incredibly sexy with that clamshell, massive meats, and TPI. Still blows me away that a 3rd Gen F-Body commands WAY more money than a C4. It also has a very unique exhaust note compared to a Z/28.
Pop-up lights needs to come back.
"parts Pinto" - the phrase I never expected to hear.
Had a posterboard of a black '84 in my youth. Poster is still around but now hanging in my pops garage. These were important machines. The "next level up" from the F cars and the Fox body which were plenty awesome themselves.
Friend came by the house in one of these in 86..summer night top off first sight of that digital dash was jaw dropping and unforgettable!
Great!! Another Curious Cars with none other than Bill !!
I've been thinking about checking out your channel for recent videos and I JUST saw this one right now. I had to say goodbye to my dog of nearly 11 years today, an amazing dog and companion, and you do not know just how appreciated and needed this video is on this day. Thank you, Bill.
I know what you mean. Bill is our friend and his videos are not only entertaining, but in a strange way they are calming. After a rough day, there is nothing like turning on one of Bill's videos, here him bitch about Florida's weather, Dalton or some nice kitty cat in the background that Bill somehow turns into a mountain lion. I feel guilty almost that this content is free.
Bill is obviously funny, he definitely knows a lot about cars, but it is his open display of his vulnerabilities that makes him so damn likable. Hey, I will say one thing, when a big ole black bird flies near me, I am concerned in ways I was never before. Thanks Bill!
Good day Bill, how the hell are you ?
Would like to see Bill on Leno’s Garage…DeMuro was on it the other day.
I'm allergic to DeMuro.. Cannot stand that guy.. Bill is the antidote to HIM.
Was waiting for this!
As a Brit with a penchant for Jaguars, and a natural distain for American cars, the 'vette is the Daddy. 8 generations and there's never been a bad one, they've always looked right for the time and I like them all. This one is a beaut ❤️
Disdain?…or is this one of those words that are spelled differently in proper English?
Like, catalogue vs catalog…?
my feelings on Brit cars are so far beyond distain Andrew LOL i don't know what to say. no hard feelings mate
@@michaelburbank2276 😂😂 none taken
could never live in Florida 🔥 🥵
i could.
I always liked the way the popup headlights rotated like that.
Bill, I love that I can count on you to always bitch about the Florida weather. As a midwesterner who spent part of my childhood in southern Florida I can commiserate. Humidity is something you never get used to.
I can remember back in late 83 when I was 13 years old and seeing these hit the streets for the first time and how wowed I was. Nowadays I know a Corvette technician who hates working on any of the C4's and particularly because he says there very difficult to get parts for them and working on them as well. I still love them though. The early C4's were my favorite also and I loved the early designed wheels. The 80's were the years to be young when driving one of these.
P. S. Keep it Bill; it's you through and through.
Probably my favorite era Corvette, reminds me of a fighter jet.
I was 15 years old at the time with a learner's permit. My dad's friend had just bought this same car and was by the house to show it off, doing burnouts and other hoonish behavior. He took me for a ride ripping around town, pulled over and asked: "Do you want to drive?" I was a shy kid, said something like "Umm, ok."
I drove it home, only stalled it once. One of my favorite childhood memories. Thanks Bill!
that instrument cluster is EPIC
I learned how to drive manual in high school with my first Corvette which was a 1985 tuned port injected L98 with the 4+3 manual. So many great memories. I did end up replacing the transmission eventually with a Richmond 6 speed manual but I learned in the 4+3 🙂
13 cars later (11 of which were manual) I have fond memories of this car.
Had a C5 and C6 as well, but my first corvette was this car (in black, as my C5 and C6 were as well) 👍🏻
It's one of those happy accidents of car design where it's timeless. And love that average mileage of 11.9 mpg!
Bill should start a side gig as a weatherman, I'd subscribe to that.
His summer forecast is spot on.
"And here's your 7 day forecast, shitty shitty shitty shitty shitty shitty shitty.."
Having owned a C5 with the 6-speed manual, I can totally relate to your comment about any Vette with a manual transmission being more fun. The C4 is what got me hooked on Corvettes when I was a young guy working as a porter at a Chevrolet dealership in the early 90's.
The weather report is fantastic and hilarious. Thanks Bill. 😅
In 1984 I put magazine cutout pictures of the new C4 on my bedroom wall... Still love the shape, love Corvettes, still don't have one. I see why the stereotype is always some older dude driving one, life and responsibility had that fucker wait too! I'll get mine eventually, I'm in the stereotype's demographic now!
Cheers!
I am s well, finally got one a couple months ago. A 94, can’t stop looking at it. Just do it.
@@MuzixMaker congratulations muzix, that's awesome!!
Wow, your videos look so much better with 60fps.. Keep up the great work Bill.
Coral Gables 🌴🇺🇸 Memories of our new 1984 back in the day 👍 Great weather we're having . Gotta 💘 South Florida ! 🏄
Thank you for the review of an amazing car! I remember when the '84 came out. I was about 14 and dreamed of owning one. A friend of my father's bought one. He drove up and surprised me with it. He took me for a spin and and I was over the moon! One of my fondest memories. He took that up over 100 on the interstate. I agree that that computer dash was a keeper. That was one of the features that drew me to the car. As much as I like the IROC, I say keep the dream car, keep the 'Vette!!
That C4 is pure sex. The hottest, best looking gen of Vette to roll off the line.
its like you knew what I wanted to learn about all along
Damn Bill. Great car. We have to get together some day. This and your IROC are my world. I've had them all and was a certified GM mechanic in this era. Anything with a TPI is my specialty. It's been a while though. I'm just right across the alley from you in Fort Lauderdale. In 1987 the IROC got the 350, but it had cast iron heads. This one doesn't have center bolt valve covers, but I recall that they're still magnesium.
I’ve missed your content Bill! Thank you for a new video!!! Hope there are many more in the can!!!
Learned something new! Didn’t think the pass key anti theft chip came out until 90 or 91. Also, keep the corvette. You know you love that digital dash ;)
Less Bill, More Penelope.
Less Doug, More Bill.
I don't know who I like more; Penelope or Uncle Johnny.
I have volunteered as a driver for Mecum, allowing me to drive several C4 Corvettes. I enjoyed the experience except for the whole getting into the damn thing and then prying myself out with a crowbar. The actual driving part was pleasant. I'm just too old and decrepit to ever own such a low-sitting sports car. The heat and humidity have crept up from Southern Florida and are now menacing us in North Alabama. This is crappy weather that wasn't expected until July.
Hey Bill, nice Vette. "Unfit for human existence" 🤣 You kill me buddy. Thanks for the video. Ya know, thinking about this with double headlights, I think it would of worked.
Thank you very much indeed Mr. Bill, I do appreciate your videos very much! Best greetings from this Dutch fan of yours.
Hey Bill, it's great to see a new video from you!!! I also love the early C4 Corvette, especially a red one. It's great to see you peel out in Peter's driveway & to get the latest weather, animal & Dalton report!!! Thanks for all you do!! Have an extra dose of coronavirus whiskey!!! 👍👍🥃
Yay, a new vid!!
These videos always make my day. Just like the cat will make those birds' day at some point. Really love the C4 corvettes especially the retro futuristic LCD cluster of this era C4 to cruise around with and (maybe) mod a bit. There's an '85 for sale for me but I think some of the issues are ironed out after after that point. Hope you end up keeping this as it looks like a blast to drive around.
USA #1. Damn that v8 sounds nice
Excellent review Bill. My first Vette was a ‘93 but I have to agree these early C4’s have grown on me. What a dilemma you have IROC or C4. For me it would be great to have them both.
Did you ever notice the Camaro Z28 or Iroc's from the same generation are more valuable than the Corvette? It's hard to explain, the Vette costing quite a bit more when both were new..🤔
There is a 1983 model year C4 Corvette prototype in the Bowling Green museum. It’s the only C4 I’ve ever seen with 15” wheels and tires.
What a jump from the C3 to C4. How tines changed from the 70s to 80s
The man, the legend, Bill. Great car and video. You crack me up so much!
Thanks for the mid week reprieve! Best
30:15 Im an 80's baby and i TOO LOVE pop up head lights. I think it deserves a come back. In fact if Acura had any balls left they would have done something cool like that for the new integra w/ a new spin. Thin pop up LED headlights... how cool would that be?! And just like w/ the originals you can really bring down the hood to wheel ratio creating a neat front end that's missing today. Fools. Instead they gave us a mildly refreshed ILX w/ a slapped ass.
I have an 87 corvette myself, I absolutely love it. Great video as usual..also you can get the window sticker and build sheet from the corvette museum online..nice piece to have
Talk about flashbacks, one of my buddies I worked with back in the day had one nearly new, and one day we all decided to go out into the desert to shoot guns. he had the automatic version, but under the seat he had a MAC-10 and also an AK in the back end.
We ran out into the So Cal desert to shoot guns, it was super fun.
Another dude had a new IROC-Z and he smoked him out to the range, I bet we were doing over 140 most of the time.
I like the IROC but maybe this is me being European, having a hard on for 'vettes, but Corvette all the way for me. Your description of the 4 speed makes it sound intoxicating.
Also, probably the coolest actuating pop-ups installed on a car. Rock on, Bill!
I say keep the Vette! Sell the Camero. I think he will have a better investment as well.
Those door frame arches would really wear on those seats -on ALL years of that generation too. Even right away when they were new - and even if you WEREN'T an old fart trying to get in or out. My grandfather had a new 96 (last C4 year) -and spoiled brat that I was, got to drive it a LOT -and bashed the shit out of my skull getting in and out of every time. So yeah - just spend the $200 to make the seats presentable. But no, don't go too crazy -most people that kept those eventually repaired them at some point anyway, so that shouldn't harm collectability or value. Doors look fine, and the closures actually sound great for any GM of that era -holy crap!!! Cheers Bill -always great seeing you have to tussle with Peters wildlife🙂
Billy- That is the spitting image of my Vette! I ordered is specially with a Boss 455 Hemi and NOTHING could touch it!!!
Thanks. I love videos that show what new owners have done & what they plan to do. It motivates me with my project. Another great video. Please don't change & keep them coming.
As the original owner of a 1988 C4 coupe, I wholeheartedly agree with just about everything you said to support just how underrated these early C4’s are. Mine is an auto but loaded with every option including the Z52 performance package. I also have a ‘99 C5 convertible and while the ‘99 is quicker, the C4 is more fun to drive in my opinion. My bff had a ‘89 IROC Camaro for 25 years and while the engines are the same, the Vette eats it alive in every way. No contest on which one to keep. Corvette all day.
as always excellent work man🔥👍🏽 , keep’em coming
Welcome back Bill
Another absolute gem, both car and video, good luck with your endeavor and keep the videos coming!
Thanks Bill, love your work! 🇺🇸 👍🏼 🚗 💨
So great to hear a good review of the 4+3. I will no longer pass up the next clean one I find! Thanks.
I get a bit anxious when a new one of your superb videos doesn't post for a while. Thank you for all the work you do to make these, but especially for allowing your personality to shine through on them.
Good stuff man I am glad someone is showing these some love I have a 95 and I with all my heart think these are as big of a turning point in corvette history as the c8 is now just my OP
Thanks, Bill! Love your content.
People often lose sight of what the C4 represented. It was a huge shift, and it became a legitimate sports car.
Keep up the Great work!
The PLASTIC FANTASTIC as what John "Mr. Motorweek" Davis would say.
Love your videos Bill! Never change
The C4 Corvette of what ever year is the best styled. All other generations were saddled with either extra decoration or generic blobynes.
I enjoy your reviews and you really know these early C4s. I had a new '85 with the 4+3 transmission. As you liked the dash, I also did. I tell guys today that it was a big deal and pretty stunning when showing it off. The car really had good power thanks to it high torque production. Thanks for an enjoyable review.
Good morning Bill you should definitely keep the vette
I would if I could afford it.
You can tell that you love the car.
And I too am a fan of the c4
But me being born in 67 my vette is the c3 it's just what I think of when I hear the name Corvette.
But I was a senior in high school when the 84 is came out and it took me about two years for them to grow on me and I love them now.
Sounds like you have your hands full. Best wishes on your shop
I thoroughly enjoyed this video and your appreciation for the car
In 89 I bought this same color 86 vette for my 25th birthday
I bought my 1986 Corvette in 1992 when I was 20 years old. I still have it to this day. I wish I had left in stock, and it's only showing 86000 miles ...
40:31 “ i’m not gonna tell the story, but here’s the story“ lol. I freaking love this guy and we’re the exact same age by the way so we think alike and have the same taste in cars.
This was before the C4 got attractive.
Nice Vette - I’d say keep it as original as possible - keep the seats and door panels with their wear, but replace the top door part with the screws in it.
One of my favorites, thanks Bill!!
Bill, I would keep this over the IROC because it has the C4 fighter jet digital dashboard you love.
You do love thi car. You need to keep it. Fix it to your liking.
Thanks for what you do!
I love your videos thank you for posting
The C4 is my favorite Vette. I even had the Corvette game thing that you put on your lap and raced as a kid with the digital display.
Hey Bill! Again! Impressed with every single car you review, the headlamps seem perfectly aimed! Good Job! Misaligned headlamps are a pet peeve of mine! Love your reviews!!
