Pile Drivers Local 56 represents more than 400 pile drivers, divers, welders, burners, riggers, bridge, wharf and dock builders in Massachusetts. We offer a 4-year apprenticeship training program that prepares qualified candidates for a challenging and rewarding career in marine construction. Pile Drivers Local 56 has been a chartered local of the New England Carpenters since 1919, and our apprenticeship is a state and federally registered program. do the people that do underwater welding and Commercial diving stuff also do land-based stuff? or are they two separate occupations?

"Good question!
Yes, a commercial diver needs to be a skilled and experienced "topside" marine construction worker to be able to perform those same tasks in the much more difficult underwater environment. A productive and safe professional diver will have to be a good pile driver, rigger, burner, welder, and Carpenter. And proficiency with masonry, excavation, and pipe fitting are often called for underwater as well."
