How To Make Your Guinea Pig Love You: Ep.2 | Tips For Beginners | GuineaDad

  • Hi, fellow guinea parents! GuineaDad here. I'm back with the second episode of the series where I talk about 6 signs you should look out for to know that your guinea pig loves you. If they don't show those signs yet, don't worry! I'll also share GuineaDad tested and approved bonding tips. It can be a bit difficult, especially for beginners, to win the heart of their piggies since cavies show their affection differently compared to other pets such as cats and dogs.
    In this episode, I'll cover two signs that your guinea pig will show if they love you: they will approach your hand (and lick it!), and will freely crawl onto your lap. It's time to bring out the big guns: vegetables and treats. Learn how to make them voluntarily get closer to you with the help of food (because let's face it, guinea pigs LOVE food), and the soft fleece of GuineaDad liners. Do you have other tips for beginners? How about stories about your piggie and your GuineaDad liner? Let us know in the comments~
    Stay tuned for episode three!

    One of my guinea pigs is a total cuddle bug, all the kisses all the time, and the other is a little goblin thief who rarely enjoys being touched 😂

    I had this great idea that maybe you could make a liner that is for floor time? So it'll be kinda like an area rug just for the piggies and it will be a big enough space for them😊

    My families piggies have only been with us a few days. I think we're in the later stages of step one. They'll sometimes come out when we're around, but they still run and hide if we get too close or move too much. However, what's really adorable is that, despite being afraid of us, when we refill their hay, they usually all come out while the hand is still in the cage😂 "we're afraid of you... except when you feed us!"

    My sweet baby guinea pig that I had for 3 years died today from a strained muscle. She has a sister who is the same age and I don’t know what to do. I literally can’t do anything I’m so upset. She was the sweetest baby ever and she got everything she ever could want and I know she is not in pain anymore but I am and I’m afraid her sister is also super upset. We put a stuffed guinea pig in her cage and she slept next to it and we are introducing our other piggies to her more, and giving her extra more love. I just don’t know what to do.

      Rest in Peace. I think the best thing you can do is make sure the other guinea pig isn't getting too lonely by spending more time with her - at least until you get her a new friend. I think that will be best for both you and the other piggie.

    I actually started working on something like LVL 2 with my 2 newest piggies. Grace is 3yrs old and very very shy but i suspect she hasn't been tamed properly. Daisy is 7wks old and is actually Grace's baby. We got them from the shelter. Well, they both willingly started coming out to eat lettuce I was holding (full leaf) within 3wks. I started today cutting it up into decent sized pieces had one of them on the couch in a blanket beside me, all wadded up so they could hide, and I just watched a tv show and held the lettuce there till they came out to get it.
    As expected Daisy being young and hungry was more prone to chain eat the lettuce. Grace though just hide for the whole half hr show only eating maybe 1/8th of the lettuce presented to her. I plan to do this at least once a day till they come out of their shell. I do like your idea of itty bitty pieces, I think that will be my goal with Grace start big and as she comes out of her shell start chopping them smaller and smaller.
    I think I could go to pea flake size with Daisy already, Shes still a scared pig but I can tell she will be much easier to tame than my other ones. I have 6 in total. I will also probably try doing this a bit with one of my other piggies she has been very stubborn about taming but that's because she has an eye issue which requires her to get it cleaned daily sometimes twice a day if it crusts over, Vet has tried many kinds of meds it seems to be an issue we will be dealing with forever, some kind of birth defect she was a pet store reject who wound up in a rescue instead. Due to these cleanings, She never tamed like her sister who isn't totally tame but at least approaches me when I'm in the cage cleaning to nibble on toes, cloths, or anything she can get to.
    Oops sorry wrote a book there. Well, Ty for all you do Guinea Dad, One day i will be able to afford your liners, for now, I will try the pea flakes .

    I have 2 guinea pigs and we try to get them out 2-4 times per week, and they have just over 8 square feet in their cage. I am starting to build a cage attachment which would double their space to over 16 feet. I told them about it they seemed very excited! Turns out when my older sister moves to college in august we are dedicating almost the whole basement to my guinea pigs!

      I have 2 guinea pigs and I have two 8 square feet cages connected together for their cage. I just made "Pig City" which is a big add on that doubles their space and they love running around and checking things out. It's big enough that I lay down and they crawl over my legs

    I've had my 2 boys of 11 weeks for two weeks now - only one of them, Nick, is slowly getting confident with my hand in their cage, and with patience he will eat from it too - he still runs away if I make sudden moves and when I come to their cage. The other one, Mino is way more frightened and insecure that he barely eats a long lettuce leaf from my hand, so I'm worried that taking them out, placing them on the floor (with fence around, of course) will eventually cause too much stress and regress the progress I've made with Nick - what do you think? :)
    - Note; the cage is a 2x4 c&c cage on a stand, so I would have to lift them out, and they stress a lot when I remove their houses for cleaning, so I am quite worried with picking them up :/
    Other experienced guinea pig owners are more than welcome to answer here too :)

    • @GuineaDad
      @GuineaDad  Před 3 lety

      How are your boys now? It takes a lot of patience and trust. Guinea pigs are prey animals so they are naturally scared and easily startled. Keep feeding them by hand and talk to them so they can get used to your voice. Take time to understand their needs, habits, and maintaining their cage. Every now and then, let them come out for floor time. However, when doing floor time make sure it is away from other animals and in a confined, safe, and soft area. Hope this helps!

    Hi GuineaDad!, I just got my guinea pig 2 days ago and it is really scared and skittish. I picked him up once and in the 2 weeks will it still approach to me, eventually? When I come to the cage to feed some food it hides in the hay and it hasn't been eating the veggies and hay I gave him but only drank the water from the water bottle. Please reply!, I really need the help for my guinea pig and I. Thanks! :)

    When the guinea pigs are in the adjusting period which is two weeks.. should they have any floortime? Because I would have to pick them up from their cage.

    • @GuineaDad
      @GuineaDad  Před 3 lety

      During the adjusting time, I would just let them get used to the space. I'd imagine opening up for a floor time in the new environment might give them extra uncertainty and insecurity.
