  • this is the under hood video for trouble shooting help to diagnose my no start with out a fuel prime problem. this vehicle is a 1988 chev, 2500 Pick up with a 5.7L and TBI. I have replaced the MAP sensor, fuel pump, and fuel pressure regulator. Cleaned the contacts on the fuel pump relay which appears to be operating properly. I also disconnected the battery to reset the computer. SOLUTION WAS, spark module failure. Replaced spark module and it's repaired.

    change the modular in the distributor it breaks the fire to the spark plugs like old points use to do and also breaks the fire on and off to make the injectors pump fuel . I have had many of the 4.3s and 350s that had throttle body fuel injection do this and a new modular fixed every one of them. I don't just change the modular but the whole distributor can be bought at auto zone for under 100 bucks with a new modular rotary button and distributor cap . take out number 1 plug have some one turn the motor with a socket and ratchet while you hold you finger in the number 1 spark plug hole. when you feel compression pushing out of the spark plug hole place a crew driver in that hole and feel for the piston to come to the top . when yo feel it start back down turn back the other way till it at the very top this is compression stroke top dead center . then take you distributor cap off and the rotary button will be point at number 1 tower in the cap. loosen the distributor bolt take out the bolt and then distributor and place the new one in just a little behind where the button will be pointing at number one tower as the distributor goes down un the motor in will turn and go towards the number 1 tower in the cap. you mite have to pull it up a little and walk the distributor splines back a little or forward a little till it goes all the way down and ends up pointed at number 1 tower . when its lined up put the bolt back in and tighten it down and it will start and run. if you have fuel pressure and spark the only thing it can be is the modular.

  • @briansansone
    @briansansone Před 4 lety +4

    Im totally confused. What does the spark module have to do with the fuel? Is it the spark module that pressures up the system when you put the key in turn to the on position? On my 88, the schematics show the power running to the computer. I assumed that controlled the pressuring up of the system, before the relay switches on the power. Mine also has the ignition module from a 91. Its mounted near the coil, not on the distributor.

    ICM(ignition control module) it is located underneath rotary button under your distributor cap. I have an 89 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 4 speed, I was having to ether it or roll it off and dump the clutch. I literally replaced every sensor and a brand new $700.00 TBI ,and nothing worked , the ICM was last thing I replaced, and been fine ever since,if I would’ve changed it first I wouldn’t have needed all the other stuff but hey it probably needed it,just in case anyone wants to know here’s what all was replaced in this order, fuel filter,engine coolant regulator sensor,PCv valve, plugs,wires,cap,button,coil pack,throttle position sensor,throttle body, new injector wire connections,coil pack wiring harness that goes from coil to ICM, and the ICM fixed it

    Just for anyone who has this problem.. change the oil pressure sending unit behind the intake, this is the one that tells the fuel pump to prime and run during cranking and starts the fuel pump when cranking to allow it to start normal. the gauge can work and it still be this one.

    • @alanwylie8960
      @alanwylie8960 Před rokem +1

      I have a 88 GMC Sierra K1500 w/5.7L TBI and my engine would start and run with the wire disconnected from the oil sending unit and my dash guage showed I had oil pressure, now explain that one to me. I bought the truck used not long after the previous owner had just replaced the engine with a new crate engine from GM and it had ran excellent for several years after I bought the truck, it wasn't until the fuel pump had gone bad and I replaced the pump but had to prime the TB to get it to start, that's when I began my troubleshooting trying to find the problem, I then plugged the oil sending wire to oil sending unit and nothing changed, but when I replaced the pickup coil in the distributor, that fixed everything.

    • @rustynkennedy
      @rustynkennedy Před rokem +4

      @@alanwylie8960
      that's simple, there are two sending units on them. one is for the gauge and the other is for the ECM to the fuel injection. one is located on the side of the motor and the other is located behind the intake. If i knew how to send pictures in replies I would show you on the motor's I just pulled out to show the two. one from my 95 and the other from my 88. both have two sending units. Now on some Chevy's they did a single with three wires as well and the third wire is the signal wire to the fuel injection, that started in 92 if I remember correctly.
      Now for what you are saying you replaced the ignition module in the distributor, that does not control the fuel that controls the coil and spark. So if that's the case that means you were not getting signal to the coil and then the ECM would not fire the injectors as it did not see the signal to do so, that module is the cam and crank signal as well on the TBI so the ECM would not add fuel to a motor that it thinks is not spinning.
      These are simple systems with not a lot going on the ECM in these TBI vehicles don't look at anything like what the newer ones do.
      Simple tests for diagnostics will tell you what you need.

    • @rustynkennedy
      @rustynkennedy Před 6 měsíci

      @@andycarranza4125 if the carb catches fire when you try to crank it, you might want to double check timing as that is a sign that it is firing on the intake stroke and backfiring through the intake. it might be simple as firing order or just a twist of the distributor to retard more to get it to fire on the compression stroke.

    Hope this helps someone. I had a similar problem on my 88 Sierra. It would run if you poured fuel into the throttle body but would die soon after. The fuel pump could be heard cycling in prime and run positions(also had poor injector spray pattern, just dripping) . I took off the throttle body fuel delivery line and the pressure seemed quite weak so I assumed it was a weak fuel pump. New pump in hand I pulled the old one and found that the rubber hose between the pump and steel outlet line was badly cracked and had turned into tar. In my case the most of the fuel was pouring back into the tank rather than building pressure. I did change the pump because I already had everything apart. It runs good now considering the fuel pressure regulator leaks like a sieve and it has 10 year old gas in it.

    I just seen this video throttlebody injection is a piece of cake to fix. I used to be a GM mechanic there’s nothing to that system it’s easy to fix very basic. Well it looks like it doesn’t have enough fuel pressure you need 9 to 15 psi fuel pressure or it won’t run. There’s no Schrader valve to check the fuel pressure. Loosen off the return line and start it up if no fuel sprays out of the return line fuel pump is done or the rubber hose from pump to sending unit is split inside gas tank. Also make sure fuel filter not plugged.

      Come to find out it was a series of a few things . Intake manifold gasket, and bad ecm.

    I have been self priming my 90 Chevy 350 Suburban for the past 4 months and can't seem to find the problem. I have the exact same problem.

    • @grantwalker1381
      @grantwalker1381  Před 6 lety +1

      Will Thompson I replaced the spark module inside the distributor cap and that solved the problem. I understand that a similar condition can be set up if a faulty oil pressure sending unit is sending a signal that caused the computer to think the engine was out of oil.

    • @Willtrax
      @Willtrax Před 6 lety +1

      I replaced mine too. But it is still acting up. My next thoughts were to replace, MAP sensor and EGR. It's really frustrating. I can hear the fuel relay and the fuel pump engaging.
      Typical morning, I go out to my truck. I pump the gas about four times. I turn the key and hold it for 5 seconds. Engine turns, no start. Then I turn the key again for 7 seconds. Turns with no start. Then turn the key one last time for another 7 - 9 seconds and she fires. Then every time afterwards I have to put some fuel in the injectors or spray starter fluid in there.
      Thank you for making the video.

My truck was running at idle then shut off and this has been my problem ever since. 🤔 Finding out what factors will cause the injectors not to work is the challenge.
