    Good choices! I think Sorel updated this boot recently. I tried on the Sorel Caribou XT and the fit was spot on! The boot itself was also very lightweight. It wasn't built quite as strong as the one you have here (tank) but very similar. My only complaint was similar to your complaint. The tungue gusset is thin with nearly no insulation in the one spot. Although the laces tighten right up and pretty much seal that area. I personally think they could have done better with the tongue. Should have been slightly more insulated or padded to prevent heat loss. Other than that the new sorel caribou is a great boot! Love the removable insert! Great review!

    I realize this is an older video. However, the tests were very well done. I would in all honesty soak my boots in water to verify their waterproofness if that was important to me regardless of the boot model. The last thing one would want to experience when out in the woods are cold, wet feet.
    I have some Columbia Bugaboot XTM's. The Bugaboot XTM's are the Bugaboots you reviewed with a higher cut and a lower temperature rating. I have had them for two years in Wisconsin winters. They are great aside from a little heat loss through the sole of the boot. I remedied that with a cheap Yaktrax $10 insole I put over the regular insole. Anyway, I think the Columbia boots were at a slight disadvantage during the heat loss test. They are designed to radiate warmth from the foot back to the foot. They use slightly thinner insulation as a result of their Omni-heat. I do not think the plastic bags would radiate much heat back from the sides of the boot. That is just my opinion. They were still close in results to some of the other boots as far as temperature goes even without their radiant technology utilized. I also realize it would be crazy time consuming, but one would almost have to wear all the boots to feel how warm they truly feel. Still a cool test though.

    I have the Kamik Icebreaker. I lost one of the insert liners so I researched the material. It's made of "Thermal Guard", which is an 8mm thickness of polyester, great for wicking sweat, supposedly. For 10 bucks more I ordered a pair of inserts from "Steger Mukluks & Moccasins:, Ely, MN. 9mm thickness made of 100% felt wool. It's April in Pa now but can't wait to see how they work out next winter

    Well William, I purchased the Salomon snow boots. Went hiking 2 days. The first day in and out of streams from runoff 4 miles. Boots were dry with the exception of a small leak in the left boot. Probably a defect. The second day I hiked through snow patches on a mountain and got caught in a hail storm the last mile. Unfortunately both boots failed miserably. Entire cloth on the forefoot was wet. When I took out the foot pads, they were wet to the arch. On the plus side, they had very good traction. I will be writing to Salomon.

    For the thermal test I would have used small water balloons in a very light sock or even a stocking. I think the thermal mass would have shown the differences better.

    To preform a terminal test you have to have a heat source in the boot. The sock was the same temp of the boot. Try putting a hand warmer in the sock roll the top of the sock up then place it in the boot with a towel stuffed in the top to keep cold out of the opening the use the flare camera at 30min 45min and 1hr.

    Good review but you really didn't cover comfort. You need to wear them to test that. Is the lacing system comfortable? Do you get a blister on your heel? Lateral movement ok? Walking on ice? And to me, sometimes the flex of the material when you're walking can cause pain during long hikes. I also wear aluminum snow shoes and would want to know if they bind.

      I wish, I could take all boots outside an really test them, but I was not allowed to that. Also, to really test each pair well I would need to wear it for at least a week every day. This is unfortunately impossible for me, and it would be hard to incorporate in a short video. I already selected one pair and will record real world test. It should be posted soon. Stay tuned. Take care!

    @macmaster9840 Před 5 lety +1

    I very much like your scientific approach. However, please consider the following:
    1) "Waterproofness" often goes both ways. The more waterproof your boot is the more problem you will have with sweat/condensation from inside. This is particularly important for boots used during multi day tent trekking with limited drying possibilities. After many years use I have now abandoned Nokian Naali for this specific reason.
    2) The heat test is good idea. However, sock is cold when it goes in and cold when it comes out. It would have been better to put a hard boiled egg direct from pan in each boot. Block opening with isolating sock or plastic. Then make heat test first on boot, to see if heat is leaking out. After some hours take temperature on egg to verify heat loss in egg.
    3) As already mentioned always use wool (socks). Wool is providing good insulation and warmth even when wet. Cotton absorb all moist, provide bad insulation when wet and cool everything in its proximity when the moist vaporize. That said, contrary to what might be expected a cotton smock works surprisingly well as protective exterior layer winter time. This is due to that it sucks the moist from your inner layers so that your body stay dry, and vaporize it better than most high tech/gore-tex material. Finally it's great windbreaker if woven correctly.
    Just some ideas.

    • @tbrew8222
      @tbrew8222 Před 2 lety +1

      tight and thin wool socks, thicker generic cotton boot socks arent a bad combo. The key to double socking is a thin tight base layer and a little room under the thicker outer layer. Just like the rest of the body. Thin wool dress socks work very well for the wicking layer and are often way cheaper for the buget minded folk.
      My wet foot solution (wet snow area here) to the problem of breathability vs waterproof was to go with mukluk sorel style and a second liner. I swap liners while the other dries. Takes all day to fill it with sweat and no water gets in. Budget option for that is buy felt liners, and bring them to go try on rubber muck boots at a farm store.

    1. Different boots for different purposes. The sorrels and kamiks are supposed to be snow boots in very cold weather... They didn't have water primarily in mind. As far as my experience with winter here in Canada and cutting wood and snowplowing with Atv for 10 to 12 hours at a time it is the wind chill and standing still with no movement that will really put a boot to the test. As far as slippery....? You can't tell from feeling it... Traction doesn't translate that way... Also I don't care how well a boot is made... Put some light fresh snow on ice and every boot will slip.

      @@michaeloosthuizen7918 Hi, for cutting wood in winter, early spring and late fall I use the Chippewa super logger boots American made. They are insulated and very durable full leather with vibrant soles, steel toe and good year welt. I wear them when im basically moving around and not standing still in deer stand or plowing snow with 4 wheeler. When out for a walk in winter or plowing snow I bought myself a pair of Kamik, Canada boots rated for -70 Celsius I think... Never had issue with cold feet plowing snow for hours and hours in -25 to -30 degree Celsius.. good traction and removable liners... C for effort.
    I see what you tried to achieve there, but unfortunatelly, you are missing out on lots of variables.
    How about body heat, instead of just plastic shoved in a cotton sock? How about moisture building up inside the shoe from the sweat, the amount of which is determined by that same body heat, which in its turn is determined by the level of activity, the metabolism, the type and number of socks worn (sorry, but cotton socks are a bad choice on cold winter days, especially if they involve some activity), and so on?
    The first three pairs; the fourth one; and then fifth together with the sixth belong to three different classes, and are built for different purposes, therefor they can't be compared in a fair way.
    And most of all, you are missing the main thing of any test and review: WEAR THEM OUTSIDE! Have you ordered the boots for this video, and then returned them, so that's why you couldn't actually use them? A bit lame, don't you think?
    I'm done here.

      The metabolism? Are you serious? These were kinda simple boots review and tests. My metabolism has nothing to do with water entering my boots when I step into water or snow. They either work or not. Also, why I would order that many pairs of boots without an option to return them? It makes no sense. Did you expect me to wear one new pair every week during a winter?

    Got to have at least 800 or 1000 g of insulation or permal off to do any good for you it just ain't worth it without that much

    Why don't women do review ls for snow boots🤷‍♀️😔

      Very true. It was so difficult finding boots for my wife. Most reviews are women talking about aesthetics instead of performance which isn't helpful when I'm trying to keep my poor wife's feet warm! Hope you found some great women's boots.

      Your patch? Do I owe you something Jesse? You should read video's descriptions before expecting something to just come.
