Grave of the Fireflies is no joke.
“*sobbing uncontrollably*” sums it up.
I punish people for their arrogance by making them watch that. One girl never talked to me again and I’m worried she might have killed herself, and my best friend locked himself in his room and cried for a week.
Geez, I must have a heart of stone because I actually really liked it and watched it like....4 times. (I swear I'm not a horrible person, I just liked how emotional and real it was)
Just make them watch A Dreaming Girl, but only half of it. That would do a lot worse

Grave of the Firefles isnt no joek at all, how in depth it goes with the hiroshima bombings, but Bearfoot Gen is just horrific, it was made by a person who witnessed hiroshima in person and actually is Gen, no joke Bearfoot Gen is MUCH MUCH more realistic and gory,, by the way i recommend the manga which is much more in dpeth about it
SPOILERS AHEAD!
basically the real event that saved GENS LIFE from the nuclear bomb was that he dropped a rock, bent down to get it and then it happened, over 100'000 people died instantly, that simpl;e move gen made saved his life as the explosion and radiation and dust went above him, but his family wasnt so lucky, his whole family died, with his father and eldest sister being melted alive and his little brother instantly crushed and only with the mother surviving, seeing the 2nd youngest scream for help while being burnt but the upcoming flames was petrifying, they adopted another child who's mother was instantly killed who looked just like Gens younger brother, the mother soon gave birth but the baby who was called Tomoko (meaning lots of friends in japanese) died of lack of nutrition, because the mother couldnt breast feed and sooner the mother died of cancer and Gen and the foster child were alone in waste lands
My cousin brother wrote a project and essay on the bombing to stop him from crying and I was there like give up, it's ok to cry 😢 and we cried for a few hours, he was depressed for a week

Good thing I would never do something like that.
My cousin was born with a deformed ear and was deaf, he got surgery when he was in 6th grade so he could hear and get a working hearing aid, before then all the way to highschool he was bullied the same way shoko was in a silent voice, he even told me that his best friend use to be the one who would bully him about his hearing disorder , so in a way a silent voice meant a lot to me
It meant a lot to me as well. I had my hearing aids pulled out before but nothing compared to what the girl went through in the movie even if it was fictional. It was a masterpiece of a movie.

But at the same time you think it was a beautiful movie and something that everybody has to expierence once in their lives.

Part of the reason I love Spirited Away is because of how relatable I find it. I feel like Chihiro did the exact same things I would do if I was put into that situation.

My favorite is Perfect Blue for the plot and meaning, as well as the message it's pretty decent as a thriller even in anime form. It holds up to even the thriller live-action classics.
And The Girl Who Leapt Through Time for the artwork and concept of the story which took me by surprise and no movie since then has surprised me ever again.
A silent voice is right about me. Also I love the English dub more than the Japanese original because the person who voices Shouko is actually deaf.

My favorite is a silent voice and I have to say I have never been bullied but that’s the first anime to make me cry and overall the movie was good
there was a picture book of Grave of the Fireflies at my grandparent's house in Taiwan, and when my mom and i were visiting when i was around 5 (we live in the States), my mom read it to me thinking it was a happy picture book for kids.....it was not
(although i still made her finish the book because i liked it lmao)

The Secret World of Arriety was literally the first anime movie I watched before I even knew what anime was. I saw it at a friend's house during a sleepover when I was young. And YEARS later found it and got it for myself. The ONLY way I remembered it was remembering what Arriety looked like. I didn't even remember her name. Just that she was tiny with orange hair in a ponytail and a red dress. Lol. It made that much of an impact. When I saw it at Barnes & Nobles I freaked and knew instantly it was the same movie.
