- Found on an old VHS tape, at a time when I had crap TV reception, so apologies for the quality but until someone uploads a better copy of this feature this is a good as it gets!

my right ear is lonely
Even back then, Jeremy was a broken down old fart, haha
Rx7s are just the perfect car. Could be a dd all stock with proper maintenance, IS a great handling car, doesn't weight too much, unique (concidering it a rotary.) The car has perfect curves, good in a straight line, drifting if you're into that. It's a rounded car, def a tuners car
I cannot simply live my life without having an RX-7 on it's owned car history!! Luvd that car for too many years now
You're a nutter if you take the Jaguar XJS over the RX-7 😂😂
And now they have gone their seperate ways... The RX-7 is hard to find these days for under 7-10k, while the 3000GT's can be bought for half the price.
Sadly both cars have often been the victim of idiots with Halfords gift vouchers.
This ages badly
Jesus Christ 7k
@@robinkuijper6067 Not really?
Nowadays you'd see the RX7 for twice that.
The 3000 GT is still cheap as can be lol.
@@lepewthepew8408 honestly should've listened to my gut and invested in one, I would've made back a lot with how much they've risen in value. I had my eyes on a rough red one throughout highschool but settled for a white ford probe. LOL.
Comparing an XJS to that RX7 is like comparing a sopwith camel to the space shuttle...... which isn't out of the realm of possibility in top gear land..... just look at them!
I'm glad people don't like the Fds. Most likely, those are the people that would ruin the name anyways.
I'd like the fd3s
Aamzing, cant believe this guy has been doing this show for this long, thanks for uploading it!
The 3000GT's looks have also stood up to the test of time. The interior is still better than most cars out there today.
You can really hear the difference in jeremy's accent when he says pounds
The XJS is such a piece of shit, hilarious that anyone would ever recommend one.
the rx-7 has kept it's looks over the years which is something money can not buy...
honestly the rx-7 has kept it's looks over the years... that's something money can't buy
RX7 still looks like a beauty after 19 years ! :D
Power Steering. True Innovative technology we've yet to see as a standard car feature.
Funny though, the Rx7 has held up the best over the last 20 years, still as timelessly beautiful as it was then.
The RX-7 has a timeless design. The 3000GT looks about as 90s as season 1 of the Fresh Prince of Belair.
Thank you so much for this video.
@arthur92710 quick question, im looking at getting one of these cars or a mustang, and its down to the wire between the two. My deciding factor will be comfort. Im 6'4 and fit comfortably in the mustang. How do you fit in your mitsubishi?
RX7 FD (and FC) are both cars that I must own in my permanent garage. 3000GT is a car that I'd like to at least drive and probably own for a while, but it doesn't hold a spot on my goal garage.
It's also quite weird/funny to me that this came out around a year after my MX5 was made.
Jeremy made a common mistake in saying that the RX-7 uses two differently sized turbos. In fact, the twin turbo system uses two Hitachi HT-12s, both the same size, trim and AR. Both turbos are exactly the same. Simply speaking, the primary turbo spools first then when there is enough airflow to support driving the secondary turbo, it is brought online after a short "pre-spool" period. This is all well documented in the RX-7 training manual and FSM.
If I had a dollar for every pixel in this vid I would have 50 cents.
Thanks for uploading though.
great vid!
I have a '94 RX7. Even though the ride was actually improved by my Stance coilovers, it is by far I've ever been in, It's the trickiest car I've ever driven as well. I LOVE IT.
I like the look of the RX-7, if it's not tuned, it's still modern, despite beeing designed in the late 80's. But the number's of Gadget's the 3000GT had back then is also impressive.
@pedrocatalao thats what sequential tt's do, small one spools up for low revs then either the big turbo or both turbos go at the same time for higher rpms. Parallel twin turbos work at the same time for all rpms.
Totally agree. I can't choose between them either. I've been looking for both of them equally, and I think I'll end up snagging a VR4. The the idea of a rotary engine doubling HP scares me.
Sold my 86' RX-7 in 2005 with 291,000 miles on it. It was still running with the original 1mm apex seals in it. Incredible cars.
The RX-7 styling has certainly aged well.
I think its pretty great that he comments on how AC, heat, cruise control, and airbags are "toys" and now a days all of that stuff comes standard on vehicles. Oh how the times have changed
the rx7 is one of my all time favorite cars
Well played dear sir... Well played.
Around here, I see 3000GT's rotting in sheds along back roads, never seen one on the road. I've only ever seen two FD's in my life, both stunning and made my week =). That styling is timeless. BTW glad it is Clarkson in this vid =)
The RX7 is probably the best looking car Japan ever made
I'd love to see Jeremy today re-visit some of cars to see what he has to say about them now.
They're sequential on the RX-7 because it only has a single exhaust manifold. It doesn't necessarily put down more psi that a twin setup, it just operates differently. Notice he doesn't mention the Rx-7's hp.
Love the 3000gt, have a Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo (exact same car) as my daily driver and I can't get enough of it.
notice how he also just cold starts and shuts off the rx7 like it's not a problem at all (damaging apex seals and flooding the engine)
rx7 has some o the best lines in cars period, easily my favorite have sexiest thing ever made
the 3000GT is soo underrated... its probably one of the fastest tuners out there:)
WE WANT 300zx on Top Gear in the 90s
Very cool video.
my left ear really enjoyed this
I have a feeling Jaguar was paying Jeremy in the 90's cause this is the third vid I've seen of him taking wonderful sports cars, tossing them aside and taking an old, massive, gas guzzling Jag.
I like how he says the Wankel is a complicated affair. Compared to a cylinder engine it's child's play
@jatevans01
Recorded in 1993. Mmmmmm, when did HD come in?
Jezza does not know how lucky he is!
According to Jeremy I'm a disco boy. LOL I love my RX-7. Those 3000GTs are elephants.
In the mitsubishi's main market, the US, they fell back in love with muscle cars, and japanese sport coupes went out of style
RX-7 for life.
@djphilmanns Just kidding. I figured it was from a VHS. Thanks for uploading. It was awesome to see this.
I remember when i was little my uncle had a '93 VR-4. He ended up wrecking it, totaled it. Was driving in the rain and he lost control, slid off the road and hit a huge tree. Only had 26,000 so miles on it at the time. Sucks for him, lol.
3000gt all the way!, the second and third generation ones have 320hp awd, and for looks the 3000gt's hourglass shape is sexy as hell, and unlike the one in the vid the 2nd and 3rd gens headlights are modernized making the car look way ahead of its time and still modern today
wow the 3000gt has more technology in it then most modern cars.
Never seen jeremy get out of a car that fast
honestly the rx7 holds more value because it's rwd, lightweight, can be used for drifting, looks cooler, and sounds better, and the japanese have done remarkable things tuning it.However when looking at the cars now. The VR4 was awd+twin turbo and with the rotary reliability issues I would heavily consider opting for the VR4 if it was the mid 90s again
@SuperAnimekid
No, it's Top Gear when it was named Top Gear, which it has been since it began.
this vid is a great find. clarksons haircut is the one i wouldnt choose though!
I would say that the RX-7 is one of the all time greats... Drifters still love it. Tuners still covet it... and in stock form, it looks the business. Based on handling, it beats a Skyline R34 in my opinion and as a result is a lot quicker.
The RX-8 that replaced it isn't given the high regard it should. One of Mazda's mistakes is to make the RX-8 engine naturally aspirated which frankly let down the performance.. It doesn't look as good as the 7 but it is a looker too.
@shasha1873
This came from an old video recording I had on VHS, it may be poor quality but it's the only copy uploaded. If you can offer something better, then go ahead and upload it.
Agreed. I own an RX8 now (Totally different from the 7, I know.) I used to own an R/T TT though. While I loved it, it was just ahead of its time with some of the tech. Too expensive to maintain at times. You're totally right though, while the FDIII RX7 is more expensive, some of that is because there were so few imported. Snatch up your 3Ks now, they'll soon be super expensive!
Where did you hear this Isaac?
Great video; love that RX7; I forgot that the 3000GT was AWD.
he also didn't mention it's got enough grip to rip the face off of a starved population. Though there's no doubt I'd love to get in an RX-7...
Not all people buy cars for practicality. Sometimes fun-to-drive takes it.
I'd still choose the FD3S because it's well balanced FMR layout. I'm not too fond with the 3kGT but everyone has their Prefs.
I'm a VR4 guy, but what you all are saying is unfortunately true. RX7s have a way better resale value that our cars do. But, the VR4 value is going up a good bit lately precisely because of everyone junking their cars and parting them out. Finding a good, non ragged out VR4 is hard to do these days, and when you do they command a high price. I saw a R/T TT with 20xxx miles sell for over $20k not to long ago, and a couple VR-4s at pretty close to the same price. Not to mention the Spyders...
so which is a better buy the RX-7 or the VR-4?
@McLarenF1God the 91-93 version yes, the 94 and up no.
Yeah, you're right. The Rx7 sure isn't practical, but it's awesome fun to drive!!!!
Very, well hey, its a Mitsubishi, its will go on forever.
witch year of the vr4 is the best for racing
@mehrshadvr4
actually according to specifications it produces exactly 286hp. that was the "limit" for japanese manufacturers.
it was like the aggreement the superbike manufacturers did for speed limit at 299km/h
Just because you have a 3000gt doesn't mean shit. The car in this video is the 3000gt VR4 edition, huge difference people!!!
@ 3:20-3:23 Does he look gigantic in comparison to the RX-7 to you? I can barely span the width of the FC hood with my arms. He looks to me like he could grip both tire wells with his hands and lift the front end off the ground.
@flinchey sorry but you're wrong.. you could do a simple image search such as "rx7 turbos".. the part number is actually the same for both. Maybe what you're missing is that at low rev only one is boosting and at high rev both are boosting.. they don't switch one to another.
Mazda's reviving the RX-7 for 2017 with their 300 PS 16X Rotary engine
but in the case of the RX7, why its called sequential, its because the smaller turbo performs at lower revs, making response faster but giving up top end power bonus, that's where the bigger turbo comes in, spooling at a higher rev range and giving a much higher top end power bonus
how many times did you reuse this tape lol
I really have to disagree with Jeremy. This car was badass and is much better than anything similar that jag ever put out. I really honestly do think this car was much ahead of its time, and as a result sorta put lots of people off by all of its crazy new tech.
Both cars are great. The RX7 is great, do to its amazing sense of style. The 3000GT's (GTO) is great because it was technologically ahead of its time. The earlier model 3000GTs didn't really hold up their value well, but the 96-99s sure did. The 96-99 3000GTs are just as timeless as the RX7 (FD). In other words, there's no better car here. Its just all down to personal taste and opinion. You'll get a thumbs up driving either car.
@armasiel a Mistubishi Eclipse GSX is all wheel drive look it up the GS-T is front wheel with the turbo
Rx7 still can compete with the 'good' sportscars of today- evo, 370z, z4, slk, etc. And a look that just doesn't age.
is that the VR4 or base?
Man, he's been doing this shit for a long time!
Damn right
My left ear enjoyed this
thats clarkson, i can recognize that voice in the middle of an irish pub
the 3000gt is a pretty normal car nowadays as the rx7 i hardly ever see.
But Jeremy always drives and mentions the cars with rotary engines. A small one at low RPM for low end torque, and a large one at high RPM for horsepower.
Active Aero in 93' ? Damn, didn't know they had it that early!
ah, a vintage clarkson. The early 90's multidenim disaster clarkson. '93 was a good year for Clarksons.
Big mistake by both manufacturers not making either of these anymore. Can you imagine what they would be like today if they kept them going what they would have evolved too.
holy shit. Jeremy's hair is killer!!!
97 body style bishi twin turbo is sexy and fast! The older ones looks nasty.
FD3S for life!
2 things. First, "An" is used if the next word starts with a vowel. Second, "performance threshold"? If one had unlimited amounts of funds, your performance threshold is thrown right out the window. In other words, any car can be made fast with the right amount of funds.
i would love to see him drive a rx7 with a fully bridgeport engine, with a t51r turbo
its very diff when we compare today's cars engines with the ones of 90s, today a V6 with twin turbo will give you more than 400 HP. back in the days if was very different.
the 94-99 3000gts look better. I have a 94 SL and I love it. Its amazing how much technology was packed in 3000's. As for the RX7 great car back then and still a great car today. Love how the FD looks. So pretty much what I'm trying to say is that both cars are amazing!
