    Ok so I understand you were going for an effect in this video. You may want to just let the motor stumble until it catches up with itself when it first starts . As opposed to revving it up so abruptly. Leave a litre of Rotella T4 out in the cold all night and try to pour it in the morning. That’s what your Detroit is trying to pump when you first get it going. Let it idle it’s ok to let it run rough till it starts firing on all six .

      At work (transit agency) our wash track staff & mechanics always floor it as soon as it’s done cranking in order to get the air tanks filled up ASAP… My heart brakes a little every time I hear it. Which is multiple times a day. 😫 Then they wonder why the engines having issues and pissing oil & coolant everywhere. Man idk?!?! o.0
      Sure the 6V92 sounds brilliant @ red line, but lord it ain’t meant to do this when it’s cold. Same goes for our cummins or any ICE for that fact.

      No oh no no no they have to do that if a big diesel engine does a start like that you Florida gas to make it run ruled in life and you keep your foot down on it until it’s awake otherwise You really are gonna fuck your engine up.

    Wait longer and let it rest. It is super easy to smoke that 24 V starter. Also remember You are dealing with call diesel fuel and cold iron the pistons and rings have shrunk in the cylinder. Give them a chance to warm up and expand and return to full compression before you dump fuel on them with the throttle

    • @hoojang
      @hoojang Před 3 lety +2

      No not on big truck engines new or old . Imagine how big the glow plugs would need to be to pre heat a 15 liter or nearly 1000 cubic inch motor. It is actually acceptable and was common practice to give these two stroke Detroit’s a little shot of ether to get them started in the severe cold . Also the new computer controlled engines actually start really well in the severe cold because the computer meters just the right amount of fuel to facilitate an efficient clean low effort start .

    • @CreRay
      @CreRay Před rokem +1

      Some have grid heaters though, a device which heats up the intake air to aid starting in very cold temperatures. If I'm not mistaken the early 34 series Cat engines with pre combustion heads have glow plugs, but other than that I know none.

      @@ericthesoldier I probably drove that MCI 9 back in 1989 when I worked for the Hound.
      During the winter, I would start the bus after checking oil, fuel, and wiper fluid levels during my pre-trip.
      When my pre-trip is complete, I rev the engine 1/2 throttle to build air pressure before leaving for my trip.
      How to Warm Up a Diesel engine:
      Diesel engines need to be warmed up before they can be used. This is because the oil in the engine needs to be at a specific temperature to lubricate the machine properly. If the oil is too cold, it will not flow properly and can damage the engine.
      To warm up a diesel engine, you need to do the following:
      1. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
      2. Rev the engine slightly and then let it return to idle.
      3. Drive slowly at first and then gradually increase your speed as you warm up the engine further. After following these steps, your diesel engine should be warmed up and ready to go!

      It is not the bus. The reality of life is that beautiful machine is not going to fire up instantly in below freezing weather. You are fortunate you did not kill that battery. Unless I had to go on a special trip, I never tried to start my MC 9 in below freezing weather and when I did, I would hit it with just a touch of ether and she would fire right up. I was in Saratoga Springs one year in February with snow coming down and the bus scheduled to leave out first thing in the morning. I routinely started the bus about every four hours on the day before and around midnight, I locked the bus up and left it running all night. I did not burn any diesel and the hotel staff and guests did not call the authorities. Of course I was in the absolute rear of the hotel parking lot. At 7:00 the next morning my baby was cozy inside and we loaded up and departed the hotel while other convention attendees were stranded waiting on their bus to start. You brought back a lot of good memories and I just love the sound of that motor. That sound cannot be duplicated. Take care. Try to avoid those early morning start ups in below freezing weather. If starting is not necessary, I would avoid it. Good luck.
