Mark takes a look at Kenneth Branagh's superhero epic, based on the Marvel character and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins.
Glad you enjoyed it Mark, no doubt if this film was directed by Brett Ratner or a guy who's known for music videos, it would have gotten more negative reviews. But northern irish thespian Kenneth Branagh brings a shakespearian flair and comedy to the film that made it very enjoyable.
Oh, I love it! I must admit that I am more to his Frankenstein and Shakespeare-movies, but I really like Thor. And about Loki: HE (and Kenneth) IS THE BEST THING IN THAT MOVIE! A great, evil, lovely villian there is perfectly played by that supertalented actor, Tom Hiddleston!
The film may feel long & poorly paced, however the film’s still A well acted, well directed, effective & is A stylish entry into The MCU series. (77%) (4/5 stars) (positive)
I just got back from seeing it....freaking LOVED IT! One of the best superhero movies I have ever seen and probably ever made. Brannagh did a fantastic--at times brilliant--job directing it. Chris Hemsworth was awesome in the part: charismatic, funny and just plain talented and perfect for the part. The supporting characters did great as well. See this movie!
@EcologicalFighter Yeah there is the Captain America movie, which along with Thor is really a setup for the forthcoming Avengers movie which will have Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk a few other Marvel heroes in it. Also this year there is X Men: First Class and soon in the next year or 2 there will be Iron Man 3 and a new Hulk movie just before or just after The Avengers is released.
Thor's great. Of course it's ridiculous, it's a fantasy superhero film, but Kermode is right, Branagh gets the balance perfect. You laugh with the film and not at it. Tons of fun and a sight for Thor eyes. Sorry.
I can't believe this guy liked an action movie. Usually he's trouncing everything...Oh, wait, this was directed by a British Shakesperean actor...never mind.
To be honest almost every action movie director or writter these days can't string a narrative and story together even when the plot hole and stuidness are obvious. Now and then someone gets it right, i.e. JJ Abraham with star treck.
The man who thinks the best movie ever made, which has a peasoup upChucking puppet on strings, remarks that a Marvelously funny epic film is rediculous ?
i love kermode you never know if he likes a film or not, for about 80% of the review
@Crosby Kade that kinda creepy bro
If it's, in his opinion, derivative of The Exorcist, he's bound to hate it. I agree with most of his opinions, but that's his pre-pubescent hang-up
I watched Thor in 2D and I THORoughly enjoyed it.

Might we suggest you browse Mark's action movie review playlist? You might be surprised.
"Olivia Neutron Bomb" - LOL
That article in The Guardian really was a load of tripe. Great review.
I enjoyed the movie a lot. It was good, could have done with a Ken Branagh cameo role though.
Loved Thor in 2D. Love that the good Dr is a fan of Kenneth Branagh's work as well. He's gone up even more in my admiration (if that's possible).
I was so waiting for this review. Gotta love Kermode

And let us not forget that the plot of Thor is basically King Lear in space.
@90mv You mean like in that moment in which Thor went inside a pet store and said he wants a horse? Terrific film, by the way!
I had to work to find this movie showing in 2D, but when I did i really enjoyed it. A hugely fun movie.
fuckin' ell Ken, Thor was brilliant. It looked good and didn't take itself seriously.
I loved Thor, it is totally enjoyable and the Loki character was acted and written really well.
Stay after the credits!
I'm Thor. But I've got thome ointment. 😎

Great review of Kenneth Brannagh ... what was the film again?
Soundtrack-Audio haha!
One ticket to screen three's showing of Thor at five to six
Over use of the tilt shot by Kenneth Branagh!
I saw The Incredible Hulk and I thought it was HULKing brilliant.
I loved this film
I left the movie on a massive, massive high after seeing it. I thought it was brilliant.
Very very enjoyable.
They didnt refer to the transformers allspark, but to Tony Stark... Iron Man
It was OK. Not amazing. Not terrible. Could've been better.
AMEN!!!!
The 3D was useless in this movie, but the movie itself was hugely enjoyable.

I thought Thor was boring and stupid with one of the lamest love stories ever, but hey, don't often disagree with the Dr.
Kermode actually liked something? Hell hath indeed frozen over.
@SandBarAndYou So Did I lol.
@wastedpotential616 Well then I'm glad to have brightened up your day lol.
I jhaven't seen it, nor will I, but the plot seems sort of like "Hercules in New York", no?
The scenes on Earth of Thor being a fish out of water were funny and enjoyable. But the stuff in his homeworld were just boring.
Sorry, what was that joke in the first seconds?
I thor I thor a puddy tat!
McSuperfly101 😂😂😂
it was ok
@666deadman1988 I saw Iron Man and I Iron Manoughly enjoyed that movie.
@666deadman1988 I love comics,am a huge kermode fan,and enjoy a good pun,some times life isnt that bad
I can't believe this guy liked an action movie. Usually he's trouncing everything...Oh, wait, this was directed by a British Shakesperean actor...never mind.
@filmotel nah i mean that chick with glasses that always tried to say something funny
solid film could've been done without the really bad comic relief
Kenneth Branagh is a good director, but this was a terrible piece of dogshit with some of the worst cinematography I've seen in a blockbuster.
I did not like it a bit. 2D or 3D, the movie sucks.
To be honest almost every action movie director or writter these days can't string a narrative and story together even when the plot hole and stuidness are obvious. Now and then someone gets it right, i.e. JJ Abraham with star treck.
Every comedy attempt in this movie just makes me facepalm "yeh i can tell your hammered" "what? he was freaking me out" this just looks like shit
Stop doing the trailers just review the film.
The man who thinks the best movie ever made, which has a peasoup upChucking puppet on strings, remarks that a Marvelously funny epic film is rediculous ?
It was fucking shit, a waste of a movie, like alot of these films, a set up for whatever thor like comes next
I fell asleep during this film at the cinema...twice! Needless to say, I didn't like it.
