  • Barcelona-born, LA-based author Carlos Ruiz Zafón writes fantastical literary thrillers packed with intrigue and adventure -- with books themselves at their very centre.
In conversation for the Wheeler Centre with writer and broadcaster Sian Prior, he talks about being the odd one out in his family, the mechanics behind his plotlines, writing about Barcelona, his thoughts on 'young adult fiction', the much-feared death of the bookshop and much more.
Carlos Ruiz Zafón appeared with the support of the Consulate of Spain, plus Sydney Writers' Festival, Auckland Writers & Readers Festival and the City of Melbourne.

His comments on memory I found of particular interest. Orwell operates on the same idea. The poet and writer are a great threat to systems where freedom of speech are suppressed. Take away a person's history and you erode their political power and autonomy. Orwell said to do so one needed to destroy the language of a people and keep them in a constant state of a classless upheaval. The easiest way is to destroy the economy in an act of war. Such a system would destroy any wealth or culture that its people create. Fear of an unknown force will stir up the most primitive sentiments of patriotism. As it is laid out by O'Brian states: You want a picture of humanity in the future? Picture a boot stamping out the face of humainty. The central idea if all fascist states is the destruction of humanity as a free thinking animal, and the creation of enslaved people.

His comments about the destruction of a culture and identity through attacking the language is so poignant because it has, unfortunately, proven to be eerily prophetic of the present, as much as it is a reflection on the past.
