- A couple years ago, I went through all five Mario & Luigi games and ranked their finales one by one. Now it’s the mainline games’ turn. Happy New Year’s Eve everyone!

Happy New Year everybody! How would you rank the mainline Mario finales?
First off, Happy 2024 🎇
My opinion on all mainline finales:
SMB1: It's whatever for the first, but not much could be done.
SMB: The Lost Levels: the main finale is worse than the original (although the same can be said for the entire game) and the secret finale (D-4) is worse than the main finale.
SMB2: It's just okay.
SMB3: I like that there are two different Bowser fights.
SMW: A Tier
NSMB: Level is okay, the final boss is mid, but considering the main purpose of the game, I can give it a pass, final boss music carries.
Mario 64: I like it
Mario Sunshine: Level is a bit unfair, but the actual boss and ending cutscene are good. Also, the final boss music is one of my favorites in general.
SML: It's whatever.
SML2: The final level is tough but not unfair. The Wario fight is okay.
Super Mario Galaxy: Best in the series
NSMBWii: Level is decent, the final boss is the best 2D one to date. Also, I never knew that the castle fell on Bowser.
Super Mario Galaxy 2: A Tier
SM3DL: Decent level, great final boss and ending cutscene.
NSMB2: The finale is alright. The Koopa Clown Car flashing is the only interesting part of the level, the boss is actually not that bad, but not that great either.
NSMBU/NSLU: The level is whatever, phase 2 of the final boss carries thanks to the music (🔥🤟). The clown car scene is nice too.
SM3DW: A Tier
Super Mario Odyssey: S Tier, but the Underground Moon Cavern's moons are too hidden.
Bowser's Fury: Also S Tier, but would have been better if the fight wasn't repeated.
Super Mario Bros Wonder: S Tier. Nothing more to say.
Happy New Year! And to give a small ranking, I will give some notable mentions from the good and bad finales. Sunshine, NSMB2 and Lost Levels are my least favorite Mario finales with Sunshine being ove the worst and NSMB2 being my least favorite personally. For the best, Bowser's Fury, would be swapped with 3D Land and the rest is the same as your top 5. Galaxy may be the best and my favorite, but as I said in another comment, Odyssey really takes it with the music with arguably the best Bowser boss theme in the mainline Mario games. Galaxy does have bonus points for the memories it had and finally 100% completing the game as Mario after more than 8 years. It made the ending even better with probably my favorite credits roll that reduced me to tears of joy. Mario at his best can be amazing and defined many a childhood. That's my ranking small ranking. 11th: Super Mario Bros. 3
10th: Super Mario Galaxy 2
9th: Super Mario 64
8th: Super Mario World
7th: New Super Mario Bros. Wii
6th: Super Mario Bros. Wonder
5th: Super Mario 3D Land
4th: Super Mario 3D World
3rd (Bronze Medal): Bowser's Fury
2nd (Silver Medal): Super Mario Odyssey
1st (Gold Medal): Super Mario Galaxy
Something I think Wonder needed was a second phase after the main fight. Giant Bowser is nothing new, sure, but a shadowy Giant Bowser with his power to warp reality itself going haywire as it spills out from his head, introducing, changing and combining random effects for total chaos as you desperately rush to stop his rampage before the damage becomes irrepairable? That'd be an encore I'd watch.
Galaxy’s finale is the biggest reason why I still love the game after all these years. The level design is top notch, just the right amount of difficulty to challenge the player without being overbearing or paced poorly, the music is outstanding throughout, and Bowser is built up to be a legitimate threat to the universe in a convincing way. And that ending is unlike any other in the series. Rosalina’s speech about the life cycle of stars and how it impacts all life is thought provoking, and it’s really great seeing all the good guys and bad guys coexisting together on Mario’s planet, even if that peace is only temporary. Then you’ve got my favorite Mario quote, “Welcome, WELCOME NEW GALAXY!” Even the credits are done perfectly, the fact that the pictures change when you get all the Power Stars, showing Luigi in galaxies before the game even tells you you’ve unlocked him??! Just… wow! Nintendo truly went above and beyond with Super Mario Galaxy. It’s not just a great game, it’s a beautiful work of art!
Oh, hell yeah! This is really the best way to end it off. For me, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D World are my favorite mainline Mario finales. Idk if it's just me, but I think Bowser's second boss theme in Odyssey is honestly even better than that of Super Mario Galaxy 2, going so far to say it's imo the best final boss theme in the mainline Mario series. Still, I predict that some of the older games and Sunshine rank pretty low and games like Galaxy, Odyssey and 3D World rank high. I will get to see tomorrow for The Grand Finale of this year. Edit: Well, guess my prediction of the good finales was not only right, but also happened to be the top 3 and I agree with it 100%. As for Sunshine, although the final boss was pathetically easy and boring, I will give it some credit. The music ain't that bad and the scene with Bowser and Bowser Jr. was pretty nice. Sunshine is still the worst finale overall, but New Super Mario Bros. 2 has to be my least favorite. A funny thing you mentioned about Odyssey with the final stretch is that the one who sings the song that played in the deepest part of the moon voiced Tails in the past. Making it become Sonic with the vibe makes it all the more funny and cool.
Fun fact: Super Mario Bros. 2 is such an easy game, it only took me two days to beat it... if I recall correctly from my childhood. And back then, I didn't realize just how bad that final boss was, mostly because the bosses I hated at the time (and still hate more) were more frustrating than pathetically easy.

Honestly, I think the presence of the Character Parade at the end is a nice touch too. It even changes if you've completed the Special World to reflect the new sprites. Just thought I should mention it, since the video didn't.
I like Super Mario Galaxy 2 final boss because as a kid I was shocked and scared, Bowser was like no more playing around its time to get serious.
And then he went down to 6 tiny meteors. At least give him more hp Nintendo
Yep, those exclusions make sense to me! Not like it changes anything, since the ones that are remakes don't add anything _to_ the finale.

HOLD IT! The _actual_ last level is D-4! Which... still fits every aspect of the discussion, right down to the extra Bowser.

There was no better way to end off this list then with the godlike creation being the Final Boss of Galaxy. Truly deserving! But I'm glad that you gave the Final Boss in Odyssey the every amount of praise that it rightfully deserved as well. As for everything else, I can agree with them all for the most part.

I’m not against a Mario game with real voice acting however I do have to admit that Mario Sunshine doesn’t really get that right for the most part. They either don’t fit them at worst or are just okay at best. This does often bring the question put to me of ever since Mario 64 and almost any Mario game after (mostly the 3D ones) haven’t had real voice acting, if Mario’s biggest competition Sonic The Hedgehog could do games with real acting why not Mario?

I'm going to be real here, I absolutely despise Super Mario Sunshine's finale, and I'm glad people criticize it as well.
I really wish it ended with Junior getting thrown into juvenile hall for what he did to Mario (at least for a short while before Bowser bails him out). Nah. He just kinda gets away with it all.

@tonysonic456 did you notice that there is a motif from Galaxy's final boss theme that appeared when Meowser took a leaf out of Dr. Eggman's defeat from Sonic Colors with the fireworks display of their respective insignia? Also, what Sonic game did Mario Odyssey's final section ( the 4 pillars segment) remind you of? Also i hope you get through Kingdom Hearts without cracking. I can tell it will be your most complex series yet. Happy New Year 🎊

I do, not all, Super Mario is pretty much the only video game series I focus on 100% every game of the series. Since it is my favorite video game series.

In my opinion, SMB3s finale is unterrared while 3D Worlds finale is overrated. I might have switched the two.

Mario odyssey has one of the worst final boss fights in a Mario game. It’s so painfully easy and anti-climactic. The only reason people talk about it is because of what happens after the Bossfight. You play as bowser which is kind of cool but I don’t get why people make such a big deal out of it. It’s not like this is the first time Bowser’s ever been playable in something. I don’t think you playing as Bowser in odyssey is bad or anything. I just think it’s kind of overrated
I feel like that's a gross exaggeration. Sure, the fight isn't really that hard, but to say it's painfully easy when something like New Super Mario Bros 2 and Sunshine's final bosses exist isn't really fair. Also, Bowser has never been playable in a mainline Mario game before. He was in Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story and in more than a few spinoffs, but those were spinoffs. Most of the time, playing as the Koopa King meant only aesthetical differences and maybe some different stats. Here, you feel like you're playing as Bowser which is exactly why people love it so much. That, and the entire sequence is amazing.
