What's it like to change countries?
After much planning, we left England just over a year ago to build a new life in beautiful rural Portugal. It's not been easy, but it has been wonderful.

Very nice to know the story about your journey to portugal. Great to hear that school is good and without aggression. Very important to grow up in a good respectful environment.

Great video thanks for sharing. Wife and I did the same, sold everything and moved w/ 7 suitcases to the Azores PT after first visiting from US. I pictured myself in mainland PT like yourselves but after visiting the islands first we chose here which is similar to the island life where I grew up/lived. Extremely friendly, respectful and helpful people, the language however is difficult. Coming up on 2 years now and enjoying every bit of it! Cheers.
I hear that the Azores is stunning & would love to visit one day. We wanted to be on the mainland as travel is a bit easier but we looked at Cabo Verde seriously also!

You are part of the reason prices have gone up, land in spain is so much cheaper noe, 2 hectares 7,000 euros.

My wife and I made the move to Portugal over 4 years ago now,
from "The Great White North" (Canada), and just love it.
Christmas is a little green though, and doesn't afford for very good snowmobiling weather.
We are located in Central Portugal about 8 minutes drive from the Ocean.
We have Chickens, our own vegetable garden, and many fruit trees, and of course Cats.
We just love it here. 🍁
Great to hear that you are living the dream! Canada was one destination we considered, but I think I am too much of a wimp to do real winters!

It is lovely, like the west coast but with sunshine - we have concrete/stone tanks at the mo, but looking at options.

Yes, all those dreams are at the start...as they are for you, which is really exciting. Stay in touch with where you are - we are in Fundao for the market most weeks in summer.

Keeping with the elements, I’ve always been intrigued as to how the irrigation systems work with the wells and terraces. If you ever get chance, I’d really appreciate an overview. Will be great to see how you tackle that upper well too.
Yes, I will do that...it is a huge job as the top tank is 200m above the bottom & we need to replace literally all the pipes!!

A very happy new year to the family . First of all thank you for sharing your experience and I really admire your bravery . I'm thinking of moving to Portugal any time soon , and I've noticed you have a teenage boy . I have a 15 year old boy and the only thing that's holding me back is his education. Is in year 11 now doing his GCSEs. How did you find with your son? Thank you for your time and best of luck with everything.
The school system here is great - happy for you to ask any questions you might have. N is very happy, learning Portuguese fast, lots of sport at school, no agression, kids bussed in to high school from all over district.
Your boy will probably be looking to a choice between either doing a year 11 in Portugal (to learn the language etc) or going on to equiv of 6th form.
Kids here in secondary have more freedoms that you might get in a UK 6th form

Howard can I move in to work and live there, I'm 52, separated, unemployed in Lisbon, I need fresh air and go out of my parents.
Sorry to be so direct, I can help you with Portuguese, Maths and Physics, Electricity and everything you need.
I'm saying be there but out of your family private life, in another house near by, if one exists.
Be careful ridding that tractor, is quite dangerous even it doesnt look so.
There are many village houses around here - we don't have accomodation set up yet to welcome visitirs but it is something we are planning. Have you heard of the Workaway scheme? In the summer we have people helping out via that platform but in the winter it is far too wet for that! All the best to you & a very merry Christmas
@@howardsportugal Merry Christmas and thanks, but I dont wanna make tourism, I want to change my way of life, and be auto-sufficient, and I'm able to restore what has to be restored, just dont have the means to be set legally cause I cant buy it.

Bem vindo a Portugal from Sintra . It seems that their is lot of UK people abandoning the UK . In relation to school don't forget to ask to Portuguese support since isn't their first language since they have right to that support if they are in a Public school . After living in UK from 1999 until 2018 back to Portugal in September of 2018. And my son did go to a public school and been their since and he did received Portuguese support because wasn't is first language and been receiving until know . Don't forget to ask about this the director of the class. PS Don't forget to apply to no habitual resident and to the ID card that is happening now .

Your resilience and application of effort are just inspiring! That fire would have broken me I think after having made the huge leap of moving to another country.
I shall be mining through your video catalogue but the question that looms large as I ponder making a similar move is jus how large a nest-egg would be prudent to financially fuel the adventure?

I can't really say how much of a nest egg you might need to tide you over, but it is probably prudent to have a couple of years tick-over money in the bank on top of your purchase - based on Portuguese minimum wage, that is around 16 to 20K

Yes, our boy 15, goes to a Portuguese school and very much enjoys it. He has extra language support and does many extra curricular activities.

C'est un pays magnifique, y en a beaucoup qui parle francais, les jeunes ayant plus dirigés vers anglophonie... l'acceuil est vraiment chaleureux.

It's still in the UK! Pickfords looks like our best option, but it's not simple!
I think doing the self-drive option is best of you have time...

Slow worm i think - disturbed them as i dug the hole for the tree...no injuries thankfully - lovely reptile.
Those are worm lizards (Amphisbaenia), you’re lucky to see them cause they live mainly underground.
