That's spot on. You start off like an officer on his first combat deployment. You make bad calls, you fail to coordinate your assets effectively, and your casualtie numbers reflect your ineptitude. After you gain experience you become ruthlessly efficient in coordinating maneuvers to become viciously aggressive which feels rather satisfying

Bit late, but I come bearing more tips.
You can conduct any fire mission/air mission/recon mission right off the bat, with or without direct LOS to the target. FOs are the best unit to assign drones, for obvious reasons.
At the start, when you moved your FO vehicle into position, you used the fast command. Hull Down is the best way to make sure you expose as little as possible. You set the waypoint, give it a "target" and the vehicle will stop once it is Hull down from the "target."
You use the fast command a lot, I'd recommend using quick move or just move more if you want to avoid bogging. (Fit) infantry can also go a reasonable distance going "quick," as well.
Edit: Oh, and you can queue disembark orders. Give mounted infantry any order moving anywhere, and they dismount at the vehicle's last waypoint.
Edit edit: You can also assign a facing command, followed by a smoke command to "aim" smoke. When breaching, I'd recommend integrating vehicle smoke during dismount, all in one turn.

@@ControlledPairsGaming It takes dedication, for sure. It's not for people wanting a more casual experience- as you said, it's a simulation more than it is just a game.
I highly recommend opening the (broader engine) manual, and browsing the contents. Anything you see that stands out, give it a read.
The most important things to read, though, are the commands. It explains them in detail for both infantry and vehicles, mitigating any confusion in that regard.
Besides that, the individual game manual has a lot on units found in the game, giving a little background but most importantly explaining their capabilities. Certain things are a little obscure, such as fire support capabilities, and the manual can clear it up.

    • @robertkalinic335
      @robertkalinic335 Pƙed rokem

I remember that the youtuber Usually Hapless tested vehicle bogging in regards to speed and he did not find slower speed to be significantly useful in preventing bogging. Its actually better to cross the problematic terrain as fast as possible to reduce opportunities for them to get stuck and try to avoid mud and swamps.
While the fast command doesnt make the significant difference in chance of bogging, it makes the complete immobilization more likely.
None of this is in the manual, just people testing it themselves.
Also, giving reverse order helps a bit with unbogging, dont know if thats based on real world or just game code spagetty.

One thing you have to understand about CM is its mainly designed for Human vs Human. So when fighting missions against AI, mission editors tend to put in tons of Infantry or way larger force then yours since the AI is not tactically intelligent as a human player who would use cover deflate and much better potions. So to simulate harder assaults more AI is dumped into a building to cause more casualties and for player to have a harder time trying to take objective as if he were playing a Human player. Not perfect logic but it works to a point and not much more you can do due to game engine limitations. So that said, sometimes you have to put tons and tons of fire into areas such as these buildings you assaulted. Otherwise your infantry would be running into a meat grinder as you have seen here.

Fantastic my friend! Nice job on the mission despite the relatively chunky casualties assaulting the compound near the end there. But I loved seeing the thunderstorm of automatic grenades rain hell from the Strykers! You explained very well what you were doing tactically. I enjoyed the cut down approach where you show your planned out orders and then each minute of action. There's a lot of nuance you can do with the game that you'll discover: targeting arcs, armored arcs, hunt orders, slow (ie stealth) movement, blasting through walls with engineers, pause orders, etc. I agree that the game's controls could use an upgrade. They haven't changed all that much in 20 years, but even so, it's still my favorite military sim out there. Keep 'em coming!

  • @Stlaind
    @Stlaind Pƙed 2 lety +7

One additional thing I missed in CM:SF2 for a hugely long time is that practically every US Stryker or M2 has a spare javelin and some reloads for it on board as well as a huge amount of ammo for your squad's weapons. It can really help with getting your troops set up and the game even factors in the thermals on the Javelin improving the spotting skills of an infantry team.
I'm also frankly surprised one of those ATGM teams in the buildings didn't pop your FIST vehicle much sooner, it always seems like if I hang a unit out where it can be seen I learn the hard way about it again. The game is also entirely unforgiving of assaulting an occupied building, I've never found a reliable way of doing it with out losing way too many troops.

@@ControlledPairsGaming Yeah, if you select an infantry team/squad while they're in a vehicle (can be any time, even mounting up in a vehicle that belonged to another platoon or company) and hit the "S" on the commands selector then choose acquire - it'll give you a list of things the squad can pick up. Fair warning though, there's no way in the game to have them discard it or put it back in a vehicle after that point. Also the more you load a squad down with weapons and ammo the faster they tire out.

So, I really liked this one because it reminded me of my first experience with CM, back in Shock force 1 times. The critical piece of information is: You do not need to accomplish all objectives, some are basically impossible without taking crippling losses. From my point of view the compound was far too large to take with the forces you were given, so the actual goal was to break the enemys morale until they surrender, at this point all objectives would be considered complete.
Force protection is extremely important in SF2 because you dont really get reinforcements throughout the campaign, so at this point and considering the losses I think its basically game over after the first mission.

My general plan was to have 1st platoon hit the right side trenches, 3rd platoon to hit the left, both supported by tanks, breaching points cleared by AP mortar fire.
They would secure the flanks and fort exits while 2nd platoon would assault what was left of the HQ building after 10 minutes of sustained artillery fire.
It didn't go well. 1st platoon was cut to pieces, 3rd platoon bugged out after a near direct hit from a T-55.
Fortunately the hq was shelled to pieces so 2nd platoon barely had to walk on in and the enemy surrendered soon after.

When you set a point the drone will simply circle that point to observe everything around it. If you outline an area it confuses the current mechanics. Thoroughly entertaining and informative Pairs. I'll give you a little AAR since you got me in the mood.
(Reaction) When those first dismounts were rolling up I was like fuck yeah. About to own this objective. Maybe shift fire to the north side, but otherwise great suppression achieved. Then the ramp dropped... and the enemy rate of fire PICKED WAY UP. I was like oh shit that ain't good. Later saw your infantrymen using 40mm on the 3 story and barracks. I was like hell yeah.
Stryker drivers and VCs make some wacky calls sometimes. So I don't think that's really that bad. There honestly should be some sort of confusion on the exact spot you want units to go. What I disliked was the lack of bounding towards the objective. What the hell was that FOOM Pairs? Company blob fireteam wedge? :P Might be worth it to spend some time trying out infantry maneuvers to see what the sim is capable of. Lack of handheld smoke was also weird. Would've been hella useful for the breach and the assault.
(Sustains) Getting those 240s into the fight was a good call, but I don't know if I would've gone with the roof. I feel like they would've been too exposed from the entire length of the 3 story and barracks. But they fucked shit up and stayed alive and that's what counts. Initial suppression of the breach was sick. Good tactical patience there waiting for the battlefield to develop. Abrams are one hell of an asset. Continue to use the heck out of them.
(Improves) I would've liked a more prepared scheme of clearance. I think you could've prevented a lot of casualties by seizing a foothold in the corners rather than the center of the HQ. At the very least your infantry wouldn't have been taking fire from multiple directions. The 3 story building seemed like a piece of key terrain inside the objective. I think I would've prioritized fires on it until it was significantly shorter. The danger of elevated shots from RPGs against your dismounts and vehicles was very high.
I'm not a fister, but I'm pretty sure the reds on the 120s start at like 600m. I wouldn't want to shift the 120 fires to the north side of the objective while assaulting the south, so I'd probably punctuate the battle hand off with a 10 - 20 round fire for effect. Easier said then done when the FSO vehicle is on fire.

Another protip. - Before you start the match, grab 2k 5.56 ammo per squad and assign them javelins, then you can separate the AT team, which has the said javelin to do some precision work. Aand your squad wont run out of ammo if something happens. Another thing in these scenarios, if it is night time and the enemy doesnt have NVGs, you can easily walk around in the open at distances above 250-300m.

I tackled this mission by assaulting through and clearing the enemy positions to the left of the road and then slowly and carefully working my way into the complex from that side, rather than frontally bum rushing the long face of their prepared position in the building. It didn't really make a difference once I got into the objective, and my final casualties were similar to yours. Room clearing is always going to be costly no matter how good your tactics are. Something our trainers always taught us in the Corps was that "proximity negates skill" and a room is a great example. Even a shit-scared guy with zero training can mag dump an AK from 5m away and wipe a fireteam or squad.

Just to let you know... there is a bug in the game. I'm in the middle of the video, so I don't know if you'll comment on it, but quite obviously the trenches are all misaligned. This is caused by loading a game or starting a new game on the same map without shutting down and re-starting the game. The same bug is the reason why so many of the enemy tanks in the beginning were just standing in the open, they are supposted to be dug-in.
Also, there are really two schools of thought on how to approach a CM-mission... Either you are hardcore and go in blind and accept the results (which can lead to later missions being practically unwinnable if you screw up in campaign as you'll use the same troops in several missions), or you are like me and replay until you get it down to perfection. And I have replayed this mission an absurd amount of times. You can finish this mission without moving a single vehicle beyond the berm and with 0 casulties. Never get closer to the enemy line than 200 m and they wont hit a single thing as they are green conscripts without nightvision. Just pound them with tanks, machine guns and artillery until they give up. There is no reason to try to take the fort, or even clear out the trenches to finish the mission. The enemy are reservists, and will give up far more easily than later on in the campaign when you'll be facing SF and republican guard. Scare them enough and they'll surrender.

So before i see how you assault this objective im gonna try to layout how i think i would attack. Lets start with the ramps. Basics of defense you never want to be in a bowl. The enemy has essentially made a bowl with this wall they put up. Use the ramps get infantry on the high ground as observers and get the abrahams on that high ground if possible. Start shelling those positions with the outranging of their cannons. Push 3 of the lighter vehicles through the quick access with one abrahms in support. Hold troops for a reserve in case the enemy starts to empty off their right line or QRF meets your primary engagement. Id say withhold the infantry in your primary push and rely on coaxials and MGLs your infantry should be on the high ground using javelins or calling for arty to keep the enemy supressed

hey just a rando enthusiast/follower. i'm curious about a building block you gave us on your DK2 videos, something that i would have thought applied pretty cleanly to this scenario, but it doesn't seem like you chose to implement it, which is fighting from an L shape?
I would have thought, given the large central objective, it would have been pretty clean once you routed the road garrison and breached the berm on the main route, to establish a large L shape along the road and berm to capture the firebase with a graph paper of tank and called fires. is there a reason that your assault seemed to focus mainly on approaching the base from (i think the south?)
it also seemed like there wasn't much of a reward for getting soldiers into the HQ building, when you seemed to be able to establish a firing position with your tanks and arty. why wouldn't we just sit back, lean up against the RPG cages on the APCs, and go in once the whole place is quiet rubble for an assessment and cleanup?
not criticizing, i'm just trying to learn.

Just want to point out, given the sheer numbers of Blue forces and Red forces, standard doctrine dictates a 2v1 advantage over the Opposing Force be present prior to the determination of considerations for a tactical advance. In this scenario the US was in fact outnumbered more than 2 to 1.
Additionally, Allied forces suffered a 36% casualty rate, which again by doctrine is approaching considerations for declaring the force combat ineffective.

Now of course this is not always going to be the case, and our enemies can put us in volatile situations. Theoretically, or doctrinally speaking, if my enemy is in a buddy team, I want a squad, if he is in a squad I want a platoon, if he has a platoon I want a company (3 platoons, often times complimented by a mortar section). If he has a company I want a battalion (generally consisting of 3 infantry companies, a mounted company, and a support company) and so on. @@jacobotstot2021 For interior building fights, there are tactics involved, though I agree that they aren't at the minute level of control you'd get from something like Doorkickers and the like. It's not that game, and the tactics are more macro. They involve things like: Who is set and who is moving, if you rush that kind of your position, you're going to get hosed in the initial exchange. There are ways around that. Hitting the room from multiple sides at the same time, rinsing it with area fire first to soften up the position as much as possible etc. But interior rooms are just plain tough IMO. Force composition, weapon type, morale, and training (veteren vs green etc) do come into play as well. But I agree, at a basic level, there's a lot to be said for who has the most number of troops and who is throwing the most lead.

I had a bad feeling when you put that fire support Stryker on top of the berm and then...oh. Just as expected. It would be better if you get that spotter out of the vehicle and have him calling the fire mission on top of the berm.
I am surprised that you made it through the minefield so smoothly. Every time I tried to cross the supposedly cleared path, my vehicle would blow up. Once I even tried bringing my artillery down to the minefield after my engineers failed, but the mines still lingered. Perhaps they somehow fixed it in the Steam version? I played the old Battlefront version.
In my most successful run, I got behind the fort with the aim to encircle it. I found in previous plays that the enemy garrison, upon being panicked by my fire, would flee behind the fort through the broken walls or run to the fort square. Therefore, I sent my Abrams to punch through the trench on the left and swung right toward the rear of the fort. A Stryker platoon then occupied the trench and blasted holes on the left wall, creating multiple "firing slits" from which it could fire into the square. When my howitzers pounded onto the fort buildings, the garrisons got "flushed out" and fled into my prepared kill zones. My Abram strike force was also in a position to intercept the intermittent Syrian tank reinforcement. I didn't enter the fort at all - I simply turned it into a giant kill box.
In the end, the enemy had surrendered before I completed the encirclement. I killed 200+ Syrian to a single wound of my own. The only real obstacle I faced was the minefield. I would say that this mission would have make a perfect introduction to the game if not for the game-breaking minefield.
Btw, I highly recommend the HQS sound mod for the game. It is a bit huge at almost 2GB but it is well worth it.
