Most Velvet Anthuriums we see in cultivation today are in the Cardiolonchium anthurium section, Dress, Papi, Crystallinum and such are all in this section. There are a few sections that are closely related or drop off points until further consideration but sectional grouping dictates whether or not they are able to A. Produce hybrids via cross pollination and B. Whether or not those hybrids result in something like a “Liger” where an individual is produced but unable to procreate. Sheffer and Tim Croat have some awesome research on the subject that’s readily accessible. I will say that a lot of Doc Block’s hybrids are Crystallinum from Tim Anderson’s Wonderboy which was one of the first “red” Crystallinum.
Oh! I’ll also note that chromosome count often plays a part in hybridization as well. Typically you want to pair same chromosome counts with same (which is another thing that comes into sectional grouping) but often the plant with the most amount of chromosomes plays the mother. This is why a lot of Magnificum hybrids start as a MagxCrys or MagxPapi because it somehow has double the amount as those in the same group. Poor Sheffer for his Doctoral defense hand counted chromosome count for many of the standard species in the 70s such as Mag, Crys, Queen, Veitchii, Andreanum, etc.
Thanks for the info! A really super interesting subject ❤️. These types of informative videos about Anthurium are what I was looking for. I love Anthuriums but I haven't decided yet which one I could and would like to take care of 😑
Didn't know that! That's very interesting. Do you know the articles/knowledge base where that kind of facts can be found? Would be really keen to read more 😊
Wow, you're a wealth of knowledge! 🤓 I'm glad you mentioned Sheffer and Tim Croat; their research is gold. Doc Block's hybrids are indeed fascinating. 🌿
i literally just ordered my first couple of anthuriums yesterday! There's so many Canadian content creators that have inspired me to finally make an attempt :) you have such a cool collection!!
Hey Shelby! 🌿 So pumped to hear you've just got your first anthuriums-welcome to the club! 🎉 Canadian plant fam is so inspiring, right? Thanks for the love on my collection! 💚
The information I was needing to decide what type of Anthurium I could care for taking into account my environmental conditions, the type of care and dedication I can give it so that the plant can survive and be happy in my environment 💖. Excellent video Memo, I loved every second of it 🫂
Good detailed video Memo as always 😊…I personally find magnificum or a cross of them easiest care and quickest to size up -as long as you don’t let them dry out…I grow all my anthuriums in moss with some bark mixed in and a leca layer at the bottom .. I use RO water as I have it on hand for the reef tanks ..I have to use a dehumidifier pretty much 24/7 to keep humidity at 60% (too many mosspoles)✌️
This is the best informative post I’ve ever experienced! I only follow the channels that have the same content as you and I thank you so very much for sharing your experience and journey with me, thank goodness I have the opportunity to learn from your experiences as I am very new to this hobby and most of the time I’m just hoping my plants don’t die! With that being said, I’ve now learned that the plant research is really most valuable for me to help give my plants their best life! ❤, Ginger
🇦🇺 I had no idea about the sections. I was reading about hybridisation that mentioned compatible and incompatible but nothing more. Makes sense now, thank you. As soon as you tilted zara x Michelle I could see that gorgeous pink veination. So, so pretty. Very interesting breeding information too. I'm just getting my head around Alocasia, I'm going to leave anthuriums for a bit... Alas 🥺 I have killed many antherium flamingo plants. When I can keep one of those alive for more than a year I'll take another step forward. 😅. Humidity and space will be an issue. Oh... I looked at A. esmeraldense and P. esmeraldense. I can buy approximately 6 P. esmeraldense for the price of 1 A. esmeraldense. Errrr... I know which one just got kicked off my 'near future' wish list lol.
I so wanted to master the care of these guys. I’ll try semi-hydro next. I feel like I overwatered mine and maybe changing the substrate can help with that 🤷♀️ Thanks for this video. I feel more motivated to try again now.
Hey! 🌱 Overwatering is a common issue, so switching substrates could be your answer. Go for it! 🤞 that was the solution I found, as I was having exactly the same issue as you 💚🌿
Memo, great video 🙂 I like that you went into so much detail. I learnt about the anthurium sections from Enid´s book (I like the book very much), otherwise only heard very basic info about it elsewhere. I have only very little experience with anthuriums (I have only clarinervium and villenaorum growing in Soil Ninja´s anthurium mix), but I know that my clarinervium doesn´t like Czech winters - it goes dormant. It was very easy going until I moved it during last winter about 30 cm away to what I thought was a better spot (alocasia Silver Dragon loves that spot), and it dropped about 5 leaves super fast... so after this failed attempt I put it back to the original spot and all was well again :-D Such a conservative plant :-D I dare not to move it anywhere again :-D
Are you reading my mind?? I needed this video. I love the look of anthurium but everything I’ve seen about them makes them so intimidating. Can’t wait to watch this and decide if I can do this or not. I’ve been eyeing that sexy delicious anthurium behind you for a while now… that one would be my top choice!
What a gorgeous anthurium you've got😍 Thank you for the new website, that I didn't know about and now I have to buy an anthurium 😮💨 I don't have too many anthuriums, actually I think a have 4, but yours are looking absolutely amazing 😍 I have more to say but I do not like to write messages 😂 Love the video❤
This video is perfect timing!!!!! I just got a Anthurium Vetchii today and was wondering which of my other anthuriums it was compatible with! Thank you Memo and awesome video as always!
Hi Memo! Thanks for sharing and lots of love for you ♡ I'm slowly warming up for anthuriums these days and got a clarinervium, since everyone considered it a great beginner plant, when you first got into the genus (would have loved to get a queen, but omg so intimidating! Dx) I struggle a bit with leaf growth so far qwq It's been a month in my care now and got not a single new leaf, but it already came here with a flower... So hopefully it'll get a new leaf soon. I'll definetly try to get my clarinervium in semihydro, since it's still in the soil I bought it in. Have a lovely day!
Thank you for the information. I'd love to know how you would go about repotting the plants from buying them in soil to putting them in semi hydro and then knowing when to pot on and without too much disturbance (I imagine leca just falling out and rolling around). Thanks
Great question! 🌱 Repotting from soil to semi-hydro is a whole other video, but I'll think about doing one soon! 😊 In the mean time with most Anthuriums at least, as long as they are not tiny seedlings, i find they transition from soil to semi hydro quite readily. I have a couple of Pon videos on my channel page, where I go into more detail if that helps 😊
All heart-shaped leaf Anthurium and their hybrids are in Cardiolonchium but Anthurium clarinervium which is in Andiphyllum with pedatoradiatum, an heteroclit group of mire drought tolerant mexican Anthurium.
Well this is timely-I just recently decided to dip my toes into anthurium. Starting with Clarinervium, Crystallinum, and Luxurians. I live in Florida, so I’m hoping the couple that I’ve imported won’t give me too much grief with acclimation.
I've been hearing great things about Kaylee Ellen's new plant feed in UK. Let me know if you try it, and results. Live her plant channel and plant shop.
I really loved this video. I am a huge anthurium fan myself and I have several in my home. I specially love the species instead of the hybrids. I once read that it is not possible to cross middle american anthuriums with south american ones.
