  • On December 17, 2020, THIRTEEN and Twin Cities PBS cohosted an event exploring the life and legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder in advance of the broadcast premiere of American Masters - Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page.
Watch William Anderson, Wilder biographer and editor of The Selected Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder; Dean Butler, Almanzo Wilder, Little House on the Prairie, 1979-83; Pamela Smith Hill, author of Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer’s Life and editor of Wilder’s New York Times bestselling memoir; Mary McDonagh Murphy, writer and director, American Masters - Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page; Linda Sue Park, Newbery Medalist and author of the historical-fiction novel Prairie Lotus; and Christine Woodside, author of Libertarians on the Prairie: Laura Ingalls Wilder, Rose Wilder Lane, and the Making of the Little House Books, discuss the iconic American author in a conversation moderated by Michael Rosenfeld, Vice President, National Productions, Twin Cities PBS.
American Masters - Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page presents an unvarnished look at the unlikely author whose autobiographical fiction helped shape American ideas of the frontier and self-reliance. A Midwestern farm woman who published her first novel at age 65, Laura Ingalls Wilder transformed her frontier childhood into the best-selling “Little House” series. The documentary delves into the legacy of the iconic pioneer as well as the way she transformed her early life into enduring legend, a process that involved a little-known collaboration with her daughter Rose.
Featuring never-before-published letters, photographs and family artifacts, the film explores the context in which Wilder lived and wrote, as well as the true nature of her personality.
American Masters - Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page is a production of the award-winning National Productions group at Twin Cities Public Television and THIRTEEN PRODUCTIONS LLC for WNET. Mary McDonagh Murphy is director and producer. Christopher Czajka is associate producer. Michael Kantor is executive producer of American Masters. Michael Rosenfeld is executive producer for Twin Cities Public Television.

The point about Laura having two men like Pa and Almanzo in her life is an interesting one. I’d really be interested in knowing more about Laura and Almanzo’s relationship.

Wonderful panel. Not enough time. But kudos for the invitation to include Linda Sue Park. Her perspective as a minority child reading the Wilder stories was stunning. What an invaluable contribution.

I wonder where I can see the 35 minute piece they refer to?

She wrote her stories based on her own life experiences, they were not written to exclude anyone. Many authors have done the same. A black author would not have the same experiences as an Hispanic author, nor would an Asian author have the same experiences as a Caucasian while growing up.
To pick apart the work of LIW is foolishness and borderline racist of Linda. I hear a lot of “poor me” from her.
It would have been nice to hear more from Dean Butler instead.
