- BUSIEST Day in the Life of a Doctor!! Such a crazy 24 hours in the hospital! Between seeing patients on the ward and new patients in the emergency department, there was no time to rest.
Do you want me to do a whole video on how I stay positive, even when things get overwhelming?
Thanks so much for watching!

Dang! My brain is FRIED after a 16 hour shift. Can’t imagine a 24hr. Great work! Thanks for showing us.
haha hey Liz! ok lets be real... 16 hours is an incredibly long time!!
I bet you hear that pager in your sleep! How can you make sound decisions when you are sleep deprived? And people in medicine know that better than anyone yet throughout North America they put residents through the mill. I don’t know how you do it. I have three sisters who are nurses. L&D, Surg floor and day surgery although miss Day Surgery is retired.
Nurse Liz I
If I ever become sick, I am heading up to Canada so I can be taken care of by you. I absolutley LOVE your energy and enthusiasm, which is very uplifting. I hope they pay you very well!
I work a 36 hour shift😬
Congratulations you are a very rare person in this world. Your combination of knowledge and compassion with the ability to work in such a mentally and physically draining environment is extremely admirable. The world would be a much better place with more people like you.
Wow thank you so much for such an incredible complement - I really appreciate it!
I agree wholeheartedly. There are some doctors that bite your head off just for daring to page them.
NurseMegz I’m sorry for asking this (I noticed that you’re a nurse) in which part of hospital (or if not in hospital) do glyph work (icu, ...) ? Again I’m sorry for asking but I’m really interested in your work (being a nurse).

Thank you for vlogging. Never felt bad vibes on your vlogs even when you feel so stressed and tired. Love your smile and positive outlook even on situations like that.
Thanks so much Christine!
I agree with Christine. I don't know how you maintain such a positive attitude under such a stressful position but it is admirable.

My question is, how is it acceptable to put doctors in so much sleep deprivation? I seriously don’t know any other profession where you have to not only study years to become a doctor, but are not treated with respect as much to allow them to sleep! I give you props and respect your profession!
hmm it is a great question and one that has been brought up many times... some countries are changing and even small changes have been made here in Canada and in my program too. i'll share that more with you! i agree though, it does seem crazy at times!
Unfortunately, the amount of people wanting to be a doctor and the amount of spots in medical schools for future doctors are QUITE disproportionate. Therefore, there are simply fewer and fewer doctors...even though there are more and more students aspiring to be doctors.
Being a public school teacher
R H being a public school teacher is no where close to this but nice try.
RH is a troll that's been going around annoying everyone on the Dr vlogs.
“Are you hungry? Angry? Lonely? Or tired?

It's hard enough being in the nursing staff doing 12 hr shifts, almost falling asleep driving home, I would not dare yet to go 24 hrs straight. Where I work, we are not allowed to go above 16 hrs.
Hi Rebecca! Yes it’s interesting how there are restrictions placed on nursing hours but not on ours (on Canada yet anyway)... I agree no driving home after 24 hours, far too risky!
I felt similar doing my 30+ hours of call but the RN's had no clue about this. Their union definitely would not allow some shift like that. Then try doing it every 4 days.
Violin MD some of our specialists such as Intensivists and Cardiologists are on call over an entire weekend. For the Intensivist this is difficult as they could potentially be up for 48 hours straight. Luckily our ICU employs 24/7 Pa’s and ARNP’s who help lighten the load on the doctors and sleep in house if they are able to. Most of hospitalists groups and Residents do 12 hour shifts.
I can’t imagine how our system gets away with allowing a Doctor to be on call 48 hours especially our Intensivists. At least they are not usually needed at night and can sleep. They are always as pleasant as you are when they do have to come in though :)
Girl I hear you. I work 12s 7am to 7pm , but really never leave before 13.5-14 hours documenting, because our pt. to nurse ratio is crazy! I like my facility, but I am a new RN...just trying to gain some experience and go on to a facility with way safer patient ratios.
i think it’s just a bit different for drs. she seems to be on call so she shows up when/if she’s needed but a nurse is going to be on hand literally the entire time
This woman is going to be a fantastic physician. She really has "a light" in her, as they say. To stay so cool and calm under such pressure is amazing, but most importantly you can tell she has a deep sense of compassion. That's what most doctors are lacking these days, and you can't teach empathy in medical school. I love seeing people doing exactly what they were meant to do in this life, and she's one of them.
Ugh, I remember those nights with Zero sleep. Looking back, I'm not even sure how I did it!
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother...thank you for making the content that you do💛
Thanks Joy i really appreciate it!

Yes please make that video about calming yourself down! I’m a very anxious person but find your voice so soothing, so every time I feel super anxious I’ll listen to your videos (kind of weird I know LOL)
Love you!
Hi MacKenzie - wow that really made my day to know that these videos are helping in a way I never would have expected! Thank you so much for sharing and I’ll do my best to make a video about coping strategies!
I agree and I love that you actual read the comments and respond even if it’s just to acknowledge the comment
@@ViolinMD Yes, your posivity is really amazing, I have anxiety too but watching you does calm me down. Plus, your videos is really intresting and I'm learning about your work. Thank you!
I can’t imagine what it’s like. I could never do it -need my sleep so much, or else I’ll get ill 😐
Yeah I agree that it’s not sustainable... it’s tough even in residency, but I certainly couldn’t keep doing this forever!
Violin MD you’re a trooper 💪
They need to have shorter shifts or more sleep time
Violin MD what kind of doctor are you? What is your specialty?
Ah well shes a doctor lol
Good job showing the stress of the 24 hr call day for an IM resident. Hence, why I went into anesthesia. I would not be a nice person when answering pagers from all over the hospital for random things at 3am. Of course, we do still have to respond on call to midnight labor epidurals and emergent surgery so I suppose everyone has their cross to bear.
Thanks Bolt SRNA - I agree each medical specialty has it's own challenges, and IM certainly feels it during residency that's for sure!!
I used to be terrified of hospitals but watching your videos has really given me an insight into a doctor life and I feel so much more relaxed about going to hospital so thank you 😊❤️
You are so strong! Please do the video on keeping positive under stress. I work well but tend to get irritated easily. Thx 😘
Mmm yes classic problem... I’ve felt myself get into that irritated state at times too! Ok great glad to hear you are interested in that kind of video!
I can’t even work more than 7or 8 hours. How you able to work all these hours? Super human
haha well thank goodness it isn't every day!!
OMG, working 24u is not that hard. I use to work weeks from 95 houres.easy. with day and night jobs combined + evening school 3 days surplus. Not counted as work.
You are very hard working doctor💜💜💜💜
probably my favourite so far...got to see more of your lovely personality and more of your light-hearted sense of humour. beautiful!!.
Thanks so much Cee Q - i really appreciate it!! yeah i feel like i just keep getting more comfortable... although maybe it's the lack of sleep got me a little loopy hehehe
@@ViolinMD can you do a video on special needs people and the different seizures we go through
My heart dropped when you said the patient was passing away! My great uncle passed last week!
im so sorry,
I'm very sorry for your loss.
I’m not a doctor or anything, but I just wanted to say that I think you guys are all AMAZING. You might be tired and stressed, but you work so hard to help your patients. It’s cool to watch.
I'm a 1st year pediatrics resident and honestly it does get overwhelming from time to time!
You're such a joyful person that I'm sure your patients love you and appreciate the things you do for them❤
Please do a video on how to stay positive and the techniques you use to keep on smiling on the darkest of days.❤❤❤❤
I saw u for the first time noww liked u . I am doctor A from algeria
Im prepairing for residensy this year wish me luck peace.
I actually really like the acronym. It even makes sense in this context. In german “halt” is a synonym for “stop”. What a coincidence. Love the vid by the way ❤️
You’re so fun to watch. I admire you’re uplifting personality.
Thank you for taking the time to film and update us throughout your busy shift!! It is so fascinating to watch how your day goes and the challenges you’re faced with.
Thank you for also making time for vlogs! You’re such a hard worker :)
I’m a CNA and hearing someone is actively passing away hurts and sucks. I get connected to the people I take care of, one of my favorite residents recently passed away and it broke my heart. The medical field is definitely hard and being a CNA isn’t easy, I’m going to nursing school soon to become a registered nurse and I’m excited and nervous and stuff. I love watching your videos.
Thank you for your service and i am sorry they died

You are so so dedicated to your job. Makes me proud :)
please look after yourself. you’re a warrior! thanks for being such a hard working doctor ❤️
aw thank you so much! yes this weekend is now a self-care time!
I just found your channel. I can't imagine what its like to see people on days like this on their last moments. My heart goes out to that family of the person who is passing away and also to you. Those patients are your family for that period of time they are at the hospital. I now respect the medical field so much more thanks to you. You work so hard and I can't even imagine what its like to go through a rough and sometimes heartbreaking days.
You're such a happy person! Love your energy
Great content as always! Would definitely love to see a video on how you stay so positive!
Your videos are so informative I appreciate them so much
You are my inspiration!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!! Please Don't stop, you are bar none the most wonderful soul. Thank you for all that you do!
Your spirit and energy is AMAZING. You are so inspiring to watch and I'm so happy I found your channel. I would love to hear more about how you keep yourself positive and energized. I'm a mental illness sufferer and a person in recovery and I love the HALT acronym. It's a really great way to keep tabs on self care, and useful for everyone!
Yes on the positivity video!!!
I dont know how you do it.. Sorry about your grandma, and patient ❤
Thanks Oda i appreciate it!
This is obviously your calling and what you're most passionate about! No wonder you're able to stay so positive. We need more doctors like you!!💓
I love watching your day in the life vlogs! I love anything medical!
A video on positivity and stress management would be awesome, as someone struggling with mental illness it can be really had to find or stay positive when things look like they're coming undone. Even when you're tired you look very upbeat :) I feel (from my own experience) the satisfaction and sheer relief of crawling into bed after 24 hour+ with no sleep would have been major. Keep up the good work, you're a bright spark in what has otherwise been a very cloudy day for me
Hi Nat - thank you for reaching and out sharing! ok you have settled it in my mind... I will make that video for sure!

Thank you so so much for all your videos! Just about to have a crazy week and watching this made it feel so easy in comparison to what you deal with on a daily basis. You are incredible and thank you for all your work.
Yes, making a video on positivity and especially positivity under time pressure would be so amazing! xxxx Much love from Bristol xxxx
you definitely need multiple (well deserved) naps! i can barely survive on 6 hours of sleep
Hahah so true!!! It can affect you for a few days after I think 😅
Siobhan: I’m stressed Literally still smiling sweet and adorable
It always makes me feel happy when I watch you thank you for always helping everyone that comes into hospital
Love your videos!! I'm an RN, so I know the struggles of being overwhelmed, tired, etc. Keep it up you're doing great!
your vlogs are so great, you really get to see behind the scenes! and they are always so informative!
So glad you feel that way - thank you!! 🙏
Violin MD omg thanks for the reply!! may i ask you something? so currently i am studying to get into medical school in vienna and i have some trouble understanding some parts of chemistry, and in comparison to some people i know i feel like i am not talented enough, even though i am more ambitious. I love studying the human body, and i do try my best at understanding chemistry, however if its a challenge for me now, do you think that i should reconsider medical school altogether? my alternative would be microbiology which i guess requires some level of bio chemistry as well.... thanks in advance!! xxx
My Dad is from Hamilton! My grandpa and aunt and so on all still live there. Really loved the HALT acronym.
oh really?? wow small world!
Watching your videos make me calm, thank you for taking time out of your busy day to vlog and be so positive!
When I feel like my day is busy and I’m working too long - I think of you and it gives me a reality check to keep going. Inspiring to watch you work so long and hard - whilst vlogging too!
I know doctors are known for their "unreadable" handwriting😅 Are you and your staff able to read each others writing or does it take getting use to??🙂
Mary Lu most hospitals have electronic charting now :) no handwriting required!
haha good point! I actually work at multiple hospitals and some are electronic, others are not. I think it really helps to know the medication names etc.... but I also have trouble reading it sometimes... so i'll just call the doctor!! haha better to be safe than sorry!
Violin MD why/how do you work at multiple hospitals? I’ve heard of it before but never asked anyone why 🙊
RNBytheBay not in Canada! Most hospitals still use good old pen and paper. Some big cities and mainly those in the East coast use electronic charting or EMAR
@@tokee1234567 - Yay! Another Canadian!
Hi. I love your videos. Great content and informative. I really liked the HALT acronym
oh fantastic - i agree, when my friend told me about it a few years ago, i thought it was so useful!!
You're completely inspirational! You work so hard
My grandfather passed away in the ICU a few years ago. I remember how much pain my family and I were going through at that time. We had a great nurse but the doctor didn't seem to be so good. I wish we would have had a doctor like you who would have been so incredible and would have helped us through that time. Keep up the great work you're doing for the patients and their families!
Yes would love to see the video on positivity! Love your vids Doc!
Oh great thanks for your interest Kara!
I am currently in high school, doing my best to get As and i want to be an orthopedic surgeon so bad! Your videos give me an insight into what it’ll be like so thank you
love your videos this is amazing, i'm glad you are able to document this.
I love this! You're incredible, and the type of physician I wish I had encountered at the hospitals I've been to. Keep up the great work!
Ooh I like the HALT acronym! I think it also helps give you some perspective and allows you to see what you're experiencing is just a feeling which will pass, as well as giving you an idea of how to address it! And yes please to the video on staying positive - I find your energy really inspiring. :) Amazing video as always!
I completely agree - glad you like it too Lucy!

Please do do a video on how to stay positive even when things get overwhelming - I would love that! Also, your backing music is great!! 💙
Excellent - glad to hear you would like that type of video!!
love your videos. I do appreciate how you manage to stay upbeat
I’ve only watched a few of your videos and it’s not only how positive you are but you’re smiling. Even in times when you said you were stressed you were still smiling and laughing and that makes it so much fun to watch!
Yeahh... a video on staying/being positive sounds wonderful👌🏻👌🏻

This week I didn't sleep for two whole days (I study Literature and I'm in finals), but I can't imagine doing what you do! You're amazing and you motivate me a lot to keep going. Hugs from México
Oh boy I remember all nighters in undergrad!! Haha it’s very similar, but I think it’s easier to stay awake when you are walking around, rather than just being at a desk!
Are you even human??how do you function without sleep!! Love your videos!!
