    maybe it is better not to fill radiator with coolant till the cap, than start the engine and see how thermostat is taking coolant from reserve tank that way it will be no air bubbles in system. Just start the bike with open radiator cap. Yes or no ?

(what the shop guy told me that is for smog, he lend me a small philip driver). What I did was bent the holder a little, slide the smog thing away, and use a long funnel. • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 4 lety

      When you pull that plug (shown around 4:50) that will drain out what is in the block and radiator. There is also a bolt on the head that will drain a little bit of coolant also. You can dump distilled water into the radiator with the bolt out and watch for the coolant to run clear. That will push out the stuff in the block. Hope that helps ya and thank you for watching!

      @@PistonSlap gotta do the head bolt cause just doin the oump deal doesnt empty whats in the engine..Now if its just flushing its no worrys cause it will make its way out when you fill,run engine up to temp and drain a few times..Nice vid though..

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 4 lety

      @@craig_sez8534 The cylinder head and block/sump are all tied together in the cooling jackets. I think when the head bolt is removed it lets air into an area of the cylinder head that gets trapped when draining. I didn't get much more of the coolant out with the head bolt removed. What you are doing when changing/flushing the coolant is replacing all the additives in the coolant. All the fuzzy stuff you might get from a seeping hose or a pinhole leak in a radiator core to the tank..

    Isn’t the coolant that comes out from the bottom like that onto the fairing still hanging there getting hosed from it bad for the paint? Or is only brake fluid the liquid that is bad for the paint..

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 4 lety

      As far as I know bake fluid is the only liquid (that is used in the bike) that will eat up the paint. It wount eat it up right away so if you spill it on there. Hurry up and wipe it off and rinse the area with water.

  • @ImFwby
    @ImFwby Před 2 lety

    I flushed and added some new coolant 50/50 and also did a oil change at the same time, is it normal for my bike to kinda smoke from the front end? I turned it on for like 10 min and the temp went to 208-213 and like smoke started coming from my pipes or something, umm 🆘 please, I wanna ride!

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 2 lety

      Is it possible that you may have spilled a little oil or coolant on the exhaust? If so then you can use brake parts cleaner to clean most of it off ( when the parts are cold). The temp is a little warm but if your not moving there is no air flow through the radiators to cool it. The fans will turn on and cool the bike down..

I purchased a 2015 636 brand new and around 100+ miles coolant started leaking near the radiator and coolant reservoir and the temp stayed at 220 even while riding... Going to bring it into the dealer and they said it might not be covered under warranty which sucks... What do you suspect the problem to be? It was leading on the inner right side of the fairing near under the coolant reservoir, and the reservoir is still full of coolant which is weird. Anyways thanks if you do respond!

      If you are hearing the cooling system gurgling and or bubbling there my also be a problem. Low coolant (you may have a leak) the radiator cap has lost its ability to hold pressure ( this lowers the boiling point) Most coolant in a normal system won't boil or gurgle till around 212 degrees Fahrenheit. the same is true of strait water. I would look your system over for any problems. hope this helps.

      Piston slap I don't see any leaks well not that I've seen , and my coolant cap is a bit flimsy stays on but feels flimsy once off and it gurggles around 197-210 and my fan chips in but I still hear it gurggling and getting Hotter than usall it's a cbr 900rr 2001

      And you said it won't boil or bubble till around 212 is that Normal for a 1000

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 8 lety

      Water or coolant won't boil till around 212. The radiator cap will hold what ever psi it's rated at. should be marked on the cap. it will also increase the temperature at which the coolant would boil. have seen 14 psi to 22 psi caps. you want to have the correct one for your bike. They have tools to test radiator caps..or you could just replace it and see what happens.

    • @jimmyjoe5770
      @jimmyjoe5770 Před 7 lety

      At 5:48.. you pour in the water and it starts to leak at the bottom? Later when you pour water into the other(main) radiator opening its fine..

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 7 lety

      Ok. So what I did was removed the hose from the surge tank/reservoir. The reason was I wanted to flush out any old coolant that may have been trapped in the tank.reservoir. When I was done I put the hose back on.

    • @jimmyjoe5770
      @jimmyjoe5770 Před 7 lety

      Ohhh ok yeah I've seen that before.. didn't know the hose was under there.
      Do you happen to know if for a 2002 zx6r (I have a 08' zzr600 which im told is same as 2000-2002 zx6r) is there only one drain plug under the pump also? I see a youtube vid for a 2007 zx6r where the guy has 2nd drain plug in the middle of his bike (around the pistons). So he had to remove 2 plugs AND the radiator cap/hose.

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 7 lety

      I'm not sure on that bike, I haven't been able to get my hands on one. The 13 has a plug on the cylinder as well. It might be the same but without seeing one I could answer for sure or not.

      +Phil W I'm not sure what bolt your referring to? I looked in the service manual for the ZX6-R for the coolant service procedure and didn't see anything about a bolt in the front of the block. If you could I would like to know the exact location of the bolt. I will check mine out tonight and see what it is. Thanks for the comment.

      @@PistonSlap If the bike is cold, won't the engine keep coolant in it? Or do bikes not use a thermostat like a car and just pump coolant all the time? Forgive my ignorance, I'm SUPER new to motorcycle maintenance, only been working in cars my whole life thus far.

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 3 lety

      @@tkitchens91 Most are modern bikes will have a thermostat. But even with a thermostat it will still drain the coolant out. It won't be 100% of every drop of coolant but the vast majority welcome out

    harmonics? easy there. i dont think there are any harmonics by your foot pedal causing a fitting to come loose.

      When the chain is sliding across the guide or around the drive sprocket, I was thinking that my be a possible source of the "vibration" causing the bold to rattle loose. I had tightened it a few times then one day after a ride it was gone!

      You ever make a video on replacing the hoses? I have 14' ninja 650 and I'm paranoid. Sort of. I don't want anyone messing with his insides except for me. I'd like to learn how to do all the fixes myself. I cannot seem to find a good video on changing just the hoses and not a whole system.

    • @PistonSlap
      @PistonSlap  Před 6 lety +1

      Chris Code I never did a video on the hoses. Most hoses have a worm gear hose clamp or spring style. One is removed with a screw driver the other is removed with pliers. If you do it start with removing only one at a time.

      @chriscode6431 Před 6 lety

      Awesome. I've changed a few hoses like this in my car but not my bike. I'm glad it sounds easy enough. I thought you would have to stand on your head, steal a bear cub, run from the cops, and eventually move to Canada just to change these hoses. I'd rather fix everything myself, as much as I can. I'm a jealous girl and don't want anyone half assing my bike.

      adrian elias running the engine after you fill it will circulat the system. The air will migrate to the cap then out to the reservoir. I'm not sure what you mean by not capping off the the reservoir?
