  • Join Allan and Peter on another adventure hunting Sika Stags during the annual rut. In this episode you will get to see some great footage of Sika Deer in and around wallows using BROWNING TRAIL CAMERAS. Peter once again manages to shoot a couple of nice Stags and towards the end of the video we give some tips when using the AJ CALLER during the Sika Deer rut.

    Guys, what an instructive and great quality video. I am now 67 and have never been very successful with Sika and I learnt a lot from your comments and the video. Thanks.

      Thanks for the comments Richard. If you want good clear footage on hunting Sika you need to dedicate your time behind the camera, not the rifle.

    Love it. A nice short bush rifle with open sights is very useful in these conditions, I've taken to using a Browning BAR .308 with open sights. Great to see the .30-30 showing the Europeans how its done (it's illegal there - not enough power apparently.....)!

    • @AJProductions-films
      @AJProductions-films  Před 3 lety

      The 30/30 is a great bush rifle and I think it holds the record for the most number of game animals taken in North America.

    • @AJProductions-films
      @AJProductions-films  Před 3 lety +1

      Mike, we probably only shoot maybe 10% of the deer we see so we get to film most of the other encounters.

  • @robertbradnock1164
    @robertbradnock1164 Před 3 lety +1

    That was very cool. Gets your heart pumping and count down on for the roar this year as 2020 was a n/a lol so that calling routine can you tell me more please as I feel I call to much on the days when they are not calling.

    • @AJProductions-films
      @AJProductions-films  Před 3 lety +1

      Robert, there is no set routine when calling Sika but we think many hunters can over do it. We use the single call maybe 4-6 times an hour and the he-haw call at around 30 minute intervals but we wait at least 10 minutes after a call before moving on, sometimes even up to 30 minutes before moving. But if a Stag is single calling them we don't do any calls and just sneak in, and be aware of any hinds or satellite stags as these will be the first animals you encounter before seeing the master stag. If a Stag is on the single call and following a hind, no calling in the world will take him away from her. And make sure the wind is in your favour when calling. Hope this info is of help.

    Fantastic footage and commentary, another enthralling vid, these videos help keep me in touch with home thanks.One question if I may, what camera do you think would be most convenient for solo hunter ? Cheers atb.

    • @AJProductions-films
      @AJProductions-films  Před 3 lety

      Hi Garth, glad you enjoy the videos. I'm no expert when it comes to filming solo hunts but I do see many use a GoPro or similar. However I am not a fan of them or any other camera of that nature because in most cases the audio is poor and the animals look miles away. Most of our latest Sika videos were filmed using a Canon XA20 however have just upgraded to the 4K Canon XA50 model. With camcorders you get both good video and audio. Many solo hunter videos in my opinion are let down by bad audio. I am currently also trying out a DSLR camera with a zoom lens. But when using a DSLR or Mirrorless camera you need to use an external microphone. I key benefit when using a DSLR or Mirrorless camera is you not only get very good video you can take great still photos. But you could also try a compact camera like the Canon PowerShot SX70 HS or a similar brand that has a built-in zoom. They give reasonable video quality but you do need to use an external mic as most built-in mics on DSLR, Mirrorless etc are not great. Of course, all will depend on your budget. Cheers Allan

    No blaze? Is there a reason why?

    • @AJProductions-films
      @AJProductions-films  Před 8 měsíci

      Hi Tony, you will see that a blaze orange hat is sometimes worn in our other Sika deer hunting video clips but not in this clip as you have pointed out. Apart from that, there is no real reason why. Blaze clothing is a personal preference and many hunters here in New Zealand do not wear blaze clothing. However, me as the person behind the camera does not own any blaze clothing. All my hunting gear is either camo or green.

    What's the sika population like in NZ? Are they a pest?

    • @AJProductions-films
      @AJProductions-films  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Bob, we have a healthy population of Sika deer and like all introduced game animals, some may consider them to be pests. However, we are all hopeful for a change of thinking regarding this and since our Sika are in a localized region and are very much sort after as a Trophy deer species we would like to see them as a heard of special interest.
