- What my wife and I learned about Rod Run, the C50 slayed the Tail of the dragon with 3 other amazingly built FARM TRUCKS!! The Smokey Mountain Truck Fest!! So much fun we couldn’t get it all! We saw every make and model you could dream of and then some, ate great, met amazing people and made big plans with new friends!!!

You'll be doing yourself a huge favor with a GPS, Map or whatever, and learn/use the back roads. It's not the greatest thing but it beats sitting in traffic. Even when leaving on Sunday. Traffic was backed up 3/4 way down the strip. We drove to Dollywood and took Veteran's Pkwy out to Sevierville. Not so bad from there on.
We definitely had that figured out by the end of the trip! We became well acquainted with the back roads as needed and it was actually really fun to see the other side of things!

First time ever going to it was this fall. Loaded my Grom up and ripped that little bike all over. Sure beat walking or sitting in traffic

Our first time going there. Any advise on what area to get the hotel in and where not to go for a hotel??
There are endless options as far as cabins go but you never really know where that specific cabin is located.
There are numerous nice hotels on the strip in pigeon forge and there is a margaritaville hotel over at the “island” which is close to the main event

They shouldn't hold the truck show the same weekend as the rod run. All the late model parking lot princess 4WD and squatted trucks with underglow, beads hanging off the mirrors, no exhaust, and bullhorns is always the group that knows how to and WILL ruin a good time. I'm an all things motorsports guy too but I can only put up with so much stupidity (and that particular group seems to have it in excess). I've pretty much had to stop walking the strip with the kids after dark because of all the crap that goes on. And the mobility scooter/cooler/cart saturation is out of control on show weekends. The sidewalks either need to be made wider, bike lane installed, or they need to stay in the parking lots bc the sidewalk is not big enough for the pedestrians and all those units. I understand some of the older folks need them just to get around but most of the operators do not. I walked 30,500 steps on Friday with my 6 and 10 year old boys in tow and saw just about everything you could want to see on the strip. Just my 2 cents...

Our point is don't let it ruin your time! There are bad apples at every event, it's out of our control when and where other shows happen but we enjoyed this one, and the people that were just enjoying themselves like the rest of us in those trucks don't deserve to catch the heat for the bad apples:) Things will continue to evolve and hopefully improve, and everyone can enjoy the show together no matter what they like or drive!
Oh we don't let it ruin our time as we have been going to the spring and fall Pigeon Forge rod runs for as long as I can remember. Its just frustrating to have to plan around all those shenanigans. What I am most concerned will happen is that it will get to a point where local law enforcement feels they can't control it and they will just shut the whole event down (which there has already been talk of in the past). There was a shooting the other year after an altercation where one of those trucks clipped and ran over the front of an older car. They have already done away with the Shades of the Past show which in my opinion was the best show up there.
I've heard the same things, and we definitely wouldn't want the show to be canceled be a of ill behavior from a few:/
Not a rod run anymore
They need to have the Rod Run and the Smokey Mountain Truck Nationals on separate dates. For the last few years the truck takeover on the strip has ruined the Rod Run. Seen fewer and fewer rods and classics cruising the strip. I've got nothing against the truck guys I'm just saying too much of one and not the other. Separate dates would alleviate the problem greatly
I think we can agree with that, but it won't stop us from going! Hopefully it doesn't stop others!
