      I'm appalled to see a proclaimed network engineer comment without pointing out that this entire video is misinformation.
      DNSSEC is not widely implemented.
      DNS is NOT "the internet".
      A small portion of the internet might be harder to reach for a short time. But that wouldn't even happen, as all the DNS servers would keep their caches up until root servers came back online.

    Shutting off DNS doesn't turn off the Internet. It just turns off the directory where a name is looked up to find its IP address. Anyone at all can maintain their own copy of the DNS entries they use on a daily basis, so they'd be unaffected by the main DNS going away.
    Source: I manage a corporate DNS with over 10,000 entries. It can go out to the main DNS if necessary, but internal operations are unaffected by completely cutting off the outside world.

  • @ausnetting

    Root hints servers usually have a 72 hour time to live on their DNS records, so it would take 3 days to “shut down” the internet - and that’s only for the DNSSEC requests - UDP requests will be unaffected.
    This procedure is only to re-key the DNSSEC entries on the root hints servers, and would only be needed if the current keys were compromised or the existing certificates were about to expire. If they were compromised - you’d have to figure out how first before there would be any point in re-keying those servers.
    This procedure would likely only be used once every ten years to generate new trusted certificates for the root hints servers.

    • @DeadlyDragon_
      @DeadlyDragon_ Před 2 lety +10

      And actually it’d be a seemless transition to the new DNSSEC keys, as they wouldn’t remove the public entries of the about to expire entries until we’ll after the new keys are in place.

    I thought you would go a little further and talk about how neat HSMs are. The main idea of an HSM is that it physically holds the private key. In the simplest case of just a single HSM, the key pair is generated inside the HSM. It divulges the public key, but not the private key. All cryptographic functions that require the private key are performed inside the HSM itself, so the private key never leaves the HSM. No one, no even the owners of the HSM, know the private key. The HSM has physical security measures, so tampering will cause it to "forget" the key pair, making physical attack difficult. There is obviously a need to backup the key pair, in the case of the DNS master key there is a backup at the same site and two offsite backups on the other coast. There is a protocol which, once initiated, presumably when all 4 HSMs are in the same physical location so they can be securely connected, will then provide authenticated and encrypted backup channels for making sure the private key stays within that cluster of HSMs as it is periodically updated.

      Agreed. Having worked in Networking for 6 months in 2014 after a CCNA certification (switched careers after that), the one thing that bothered me in the video was assigning a *.0 IP address to Twitter. Dot zero IP addresses always designate the subnet itself. Host addresses always have the last bit greater than zero. At least when IPv4 is concerned. Other than that, the video is pretty spot on. IPv6 is a different kettle of fish. Back in those days, IPv6 was just barely spreading its wings in the real world. Nowadays, my ISP has been offering dual stack addressing for at least 3-4 years. Not here to gloat or brag. Tech support in networking at my local ISP was my first job ever. And perhaps the one I'm most proud of, even though highly stressful and somewhat underpaid. Cheers from Eastern Europe

      Doesn't it just feel like this is about to happen? I have been "feeling that way," and I have no reason to feel that way. However, in 2020 I woke up by seeing how much influence the power players over I life have even when what they push is not reality. What they said is allowed to be said was not what was going on at our local hospital or in the streets outside my house. I admit it, I fell for the lies before, but I couldn't once reality was right outside my real window, and it was unrelated to what they said was going on in the popular platforms of influence.
      This stuff seems awfully spiritual. The puppet masters some talk about is nothing confusing, it's just the very real demonic spiritual world that we can give power to unintentionally. How do people not get the reason we are in this mess is because people choose to reject the truth in favor of the lies that make sense to them according to the compromising comforts they have gotten used to in this world. If the internet goes down, I don't think it will necessary be because of 5 or 7 people with keys, God will simply say enough and the spell of it will be broken as Millennials, Gen Z and Alpha crave what is real and see it's not found in the carefully crafted and censored world of being online.

    A bit unfortunate to use Twitter for this explanation, as Twitter doesn't actually use DNSSEC. The explanation in general seems to assume that every zone is signed, which is not true - in fact the majority of DNS zones are unsigned.
    However, TLDs are usually signed so its true that an issue with the root key can bring down most zones, even if unsigned.

      @KingCo0pa Před 3 lety +76

      You are right. Basic functionality would still be there, but many things would fail as websites are referencing other content not via IP addresses but via their actual names. And I mean not only links that are entered by users (for example the links in this video description) but also references added by developers in the websites' source code - at least that's what I saw at a web development company some years ago. Maybe big players like google or amazon found a smarter way but this would mean they spent a lot of effort to take care of a very unlikely fail.

    • @timtom1688
      @timtom1688 Před 3 lety +62

      Andrew H It's no secret how DNS works so technically you could add a local DNS server to your home network which you can configure manually to translate some common websites to their corresponding IP adress (like youtube,google,...) but you would always need to know the IP adress first to be able to configure this 'private DNS server'. It is true that most links currently work with their generic human-readable names so they would need a working DNS system to be able to operate. So while turning of DNS and DNSSEC would not technically turn off the internet it would create a huge amount of chaos and would make the internet practically unusable for most people.

    For anyone who interested in this kind of thing: ICANN's key ceremonies are actually filmed and are available to the public to watch (google "IANA key signing ceremonies" (no quotes) if you're interested), although they're not terribly exciting to watch unless, again, this is a subject you're interested in. It's 3-7 hours of a meticulously scripted, excessively documented event involving around two dozen people (ICANN staff, industry insiders, and outside witnesses which you can actually apply to be one of) sitting in a highly secure room, removing the HSMs from a secure vault, executing a bunch of commands on a Linux terminal to sign the keys or do whatever else they need to, and returning the HSM to storage. It needs to be completely public so the world can be 100% confident that EVERY time the root keys are accessed, they weren't comprised or used for anything other than their intended purpose.
