    the blue handles/bails on the SFP+s make me think you're using single mode fiber optics on multi mode fiber. Are you trying to go more than 300m on multimode fiber? Using LR optics on MMF might not be reliable.

    • @NetworkAdminLife
      @NetworkAdminLife  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Theoretically these are MM optics. At least that's what I ordered. No guarantee that's what I received. But you could very well be right. God bless!

      My thought as well when i saw the SFP. MultiMode cable on Single Mode SFPs. Would like to see the part number of the SFPs to debug more.

      I thought the same.

      @@NetworkAdminLife Blue handles are Single Mode usually.
      Please check your SFP+. Is it 850nm (multi mode) or 1310 or 1550nm (single mode).
      SM SFP+ with MM cables do work for short ranges. Vice versa too, but middle to long ranges it is unreliable.
      Here in europe we got a colour coding:
      Black Handle = Multi Mode
      Blue Handle = Single Mode (1310 nm)
      and many other colours not interesting for this video.
      Also the cables are colour coded:
      Orange = OM1, OM2 (multi mode)
      Cyan = OM3 (multi mode)
      Purple = OM4 (multi mode)
      Yellow = OS1, OS2 (single mode)

      @@Jerrec Correct single except in REALLY poor off brand stuff will almost always be Single. What's happening is the curve of the cables is leaking most of his signal. It's "good enough" probably just on the edge of spec, but changing that bend radius will heavily cause loss. Oh and you should be able to show the hardware on the SFP, it'll tell you the model, serial, etc. Good idea to check the whole network if you find one that might have be incorrect. Suppliers make mistakes too.
      Now that being said sometimes, very rarely, you get something that was just made wrong. But its really rare.

    Do you clean your fibers? Even out of the box they can have dirt on it. (SFP can also have dirt)

    • @NetworkAdminLife
      @NetworkAdminLife  Před 2 měsíci +1

      That seems to be a recurring theme and one which I will take to heart. Because no, I don't clean my fibers correctly. That's probably 90% of my problem. God bless!

  • @barkode15

    I'd order a Fluke fiber cleaning kit and clean all the LC ports and the patch cables on that link. Our old LV guy drilled into us that we should be cleaning ends everytime we unplugged/replugged something. A bit excessive, but it did fix funky fiber issues when they came up.

    • @NetworkAdminLife
      @NetworkAdminLife  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Not a bad idea to clean them every time. I definitely need to order one of those clicker-cleaner-thingies. God bless!

    Thank you for the videos!
    I am currently in school for an undergrad in IT. I'm making the switch from HR and am trying to get myself mildly familiarized with "what to expect" beforehand.
    I recently moved to the Central Valley/back end of the Mojave desert myself and this heat reminds me of when I was deployed 😆
    Again, thanks for uploading and I will be sure to check out as many videos as possible.
    Take care.

      YOU are exactly why I started this channel. The job entails more than just passing the certification questions. Glad you enjoy the channel and welcome back to the heat. God bless!

    So I'm a Datacenter installer. And if you unplug your fiber from the switch it should be cleaned before plugging it back in because it could easily fail once any dust hits it

      I've ordered one of those clicker-cleaners. Hopefully it shows up soon. God bless!

    Are your fiber risers MPO to a cassette with 6 duplex LC on both sides? I got those all through my buildings, and I’ve seen some weirdness with flakey MPO, flakey cassettes and of course dirty optics!

    Hi network admin
    Are you using the same type SFP both sides?
    Why are you using gigabit ethernet.?10 gigabit are supported 🤔
    We stopped deploying MM fibers because of complexity of mange too many types

    • @NetworkAdminLife
      @NetworkAdminLife  Před 2 měsíci

      Many of our runs exceed ethernet length limitations. We pretty much have to use fiber because this is a campus environment. One of our switches is 2 miles away from the data center. God bless!

    My question is, how did you learn to be a systems administrator? What kind of schooling did you have? Did you complete any online certifications?

    • @NetworkAdminLife
      @NetworkAdminLife  Před 2 měsíci +2

      It was all on the job training for me. As long as we had a service contract with the vendor I learned a great deal. It was intimidating at first, and still can be. But if I just called the vendor and worked through it, I found there was nothing broken that couldn't be fixed. And I took lots of notes until eventually I wasn't calling the vendors any more. God bless!
