    You could have just done the hydraulic calculations to determine the head's flow. This would be accomplished by calculating the water pressure as it enters the structure and a flow test the size of the orifice through the outdoor hydrant less any static for the length of the pipe going to the head. This system (one head) would not even begin to fall under NFPA standards. And would fall under your local Authority Having Jurisdiction. NFPA 13D is for residential dwellings where the system protects life safety in the event of a fire allowing the occupants to exit the building. They often will put out or contain the fire but that is not the primary intent of the system. I understand the minimal approach to the system but the test that you did for the inspector was not required as simple calculations could have been done using the apparatus you made using a hose fitting and conducting the test outside of the structure all the while the inspector could have inspected the actual installation inside the building at the same time. In conclusion, I would advise the AHJ to have their own test equipment as specified above to conduct such a test! The stove/range is however the highest hazard rating in the structure but the NFPA 13D does not cover the actual kitchen appliance and is only for cooling the area around such appliance. The standard for residential fire protection for a stove /range would be a multi-type fire extinguishing system ABC that would fall under a non-water system in a residence. I would also advise the AHJ to require a 2# ABC-rated fire extinguisher within so many feet of the appliance.

    Water sprinklers are not supposed to be over a stove. Water can cause a grease fire. A powder system is placed over the stove.

    I want you guys to note: not using the Head wrench for the correct head can damage the head, help create false trips flooding your home or place of work, voids the head warranty. the Spec sheet on the sprinkler heads will tell you what type of head wrench you need for the sprinkler head.

      If it’s to the point of activating a sprinkler head it’s well beyond being just a grease fire, dude. There’s a reason commercial kitchens have sprinklers in addition to hood suppression.

    You do that to install them heads and it voids the warranty! You need the correct head wrench. I've installed fire sprinklers for 14 years. If you just protecting the stove you should have a dry chemical hood type system.

    Over the stove
    I don’t know what code is but that doesn’t sound good
    I imagine the most common stove fire is a grease fire and a bunch of water sprayed on a grease fire isn’t going to end well

      In order for the sprinkler head to be activated, the temperature at the ceiling has to be significant, a grease fire will not increase the temperature at the ceiling level to the to the level necessary to turn on the sprinkler head. The point is if the sprinkler head goes off your house is on fire not the grease.

      @@alexspcs8688 your initial question implied that you might only be installing one sprinkler head. If I had to install multiple sprinkler heads, I would’ve had to had a technical specifications produced by fire design company. The sprinkler head specifically is determined by the application and the drawings and specifications. There is absolutely no way for me to make these determinations from the two simple question you have asked. Also, I am not a certified fire suppression system installer or designer, so you really should refer to one of those type of individuals.

    • @DanielWoodell
      @DanielWoodell  Před rokem +1

      Unfortunately, there has been a significant price increase since I purchase this, however, with that being said, the sprinkler head includes a sheet rock cover plate that assists in mounting. It also includes decorative cover plate that is designed to drop off at a certain temperature and the sprinkler head is designed to go off at 202°F which depending on your location is a requirement many of the other ones that I looked at after your comment did not meat any of these requirements and yes, the other ones are very expensive as comparison. But you’re not comparing apples and apples with the other sprinkler heads.

      Sprinkler heads are installed in the center of the room not on the range hood. You can buy a stovetop firestop system for less than $100 at Home Depot or Amazon. It is attached to the range hood by a magnet and is an automatic dry extinguisher system that is commonly found in many apartment units.

      @@fitter5423 In Washington state, where this guy lives, you are three times more likely to be the victim of homicide than to die in a fire. I'm generally a safety conscious person, but systems that raise the floor cost of housing and contribute to our ongoing housing affordability crisis are not things I can get behind. I just don't see the benefit of these systems outweighing the costs.

      @goatofdeath Perhaps for retrofit. But for new construction these sprinklers would tap off the cold water piping. You’d be testing it every time you turned on a cold tap. The reduced insurance cost and enhanced resale value should pay for the incremental materials and labor. The safety increase - priceless.

      @@goatofdeath you also don't need auto insurance until you need it or you don't need to wear your seal belt until you wish you were wearing it. Automatic fire sprinklers are an insurance. Automatic fire sprinkler systems insure that you and your family (young, elderly or disabled have time to evacuate the home). Automatic fire sprinklers are life safety systems that also preserve property aka your investment. They are the first responders on site and are on duty 24/7.
