It's an entire cap - but don't worry, it does not not go in the part you drink!
It's there to control the speed the ice melts to make the slushie form on the outer.
Why salt with the ice?
Does it work only with soda? Can i use a liquid without sugar?
The sugar content in the syrups is what makes a slushie work - by acting as a type of anti-freeze otherwise it would just freeze solid.

I tried koolaid snow cone syrup last night and it did not work.
An actual icee machine uses Co2
