  • Welcome to my channel!
Today’s video features a tutorial constructing my new free pattern which I am calling “Rosie’s Messenger Bag”. I designed this bag specifically to carry my iPad Pro. It has large zippered pockets on both the front and back of the exterior bag along with two generous pockets on the bag front. Inside, there is a separate compartment to carry the iPad along with a larger section to carry other items such as a wallet and other necessities. The interior center divider has a pocket which has sections to store your cell phone and pens. The bag also has an adjustable strap. The exterior bag is made from 10 ounce waxed canvas. If you wish to use the same waxed canvas you see in the video, I have an affiliate link listed below. The interior is made from 100% cotton quilting fabric and Interfacings used are WovenFuse2 and Decovil Light. There are timestamps below to help you navigate to different sections of the video. Thank you for watching. Please like and subscribe.
CLARIFICATION: In the video at 24:00 minutes, you will be sewing on the two chalk lines which are both 1” away from the center chalk line and are marked left of the center and right of the center.

An indication of yardage required would be nice, we found that it takes about 2/3 of a yard for the shell, 1 1/4 yard for the lining, 3 yards of woven interfacing, 1/2 a yard of heavyweight interfacing.

I found your CZcams channel when I searched for a fold up shopping bag. They were for presents and looked great. I then saw your messenger bag tutorial and watched a fair bit of it just for fun as I had no need for one at that time . Fast forward a bit and my husband started asking me to make him a messenger bag. I showed him this pattern and it was everything he needed and in a free pattern to boot. Thank you so much for this. I am halfway through making it and following your video instructions is super easy. Thank you for making this pattern so accessible. ❤

Love this pattern I was a little apprehensive at first but I got there and love it. My only suggestion would be that you mention whether right sides or wrong sides are facing, as you used wax canvas and it was the same on both sides, it made it a little hard, for me at least, to follow sometimes, or maybe it is just me :)

Great tutorial, thank you. I’ve cut my outer pieces from my late husband’s leather coat and just bought some co-ordinating cotton for the lining. It’s going to be a bag for our eldest Son when he goes out with his son and needs his hands free to play with him.

I can't believe this is a free pattern. Your video tutorial is top notch and I didn't need any written instructions because it is so good. I only had a 1/2 yard of waxed canvas on hand so I mapped out the pattern pieces in Excel to make sure I had enough for the project. I wasn't able to make the front pocket full width but was able to make a single pleated pocket in the middle instead. Love the look of that. I used a combination of webbing and waxed canvas for the strap so I only needed 2 1/2" wide instead of 6". I used all but a 2"x24" piece of my 1/2 yard. I wish we could upload a picture so you could see the beautiful bag that you've helped me make. You have a new subscriber and I'm looking forward to checking out all your other videos. Thank you!! PS...I just ordered 4 more colors of waxed canvas so I can make more of these! BTW, my MacBook Air fits PERFECTLY in the slim pocket, like it was made specifically for it.

I have made this bag several times and after making the first one, I have made several in different sizes. I have added a second insert, a full mesh pocket and closures for the front flap. I absolutely love this pattern! I get so many comments from those who see it and can’t believe I made this myself. Thank you Rosie for the great pattern and this tutorial…I watch it every time I make one of these bags! My only wish…the material you use doesn’t seem to have a front and back, so sometimes it is difficult to know which side I should be working on. I have used waterproof canvas for the outer bag.

@@maryblaylock6545 Thanks for the ideas Mary. I even offered to do it in denim with flannel lining. still too girly for him. WAY too much Y chromosome. at least he has agreed to look at patterns/styles and find something he'd be willing to carry. I can probably construct whatever he would be willing to carry from all of the youtube videos I have watched. I just don't want to try to sew leather but I'm afraid that's the only thing he'll find "manly" enough. he has quite a few meds he needs to carry and, although we've never had lost baggage, it could still happen. what do we do then? that's my question to him.

I am glad you like the bag. You can make it morel masculine by adding some leather accents. A lot of bags for men are made with waxed canvas with leather trim. You can get ideas by googling man bags.

Hi Rosie. Thank you so much for sharing your pattern and you've done an amazing job of explaining the process. I followed your instructions and I sewed the bag and it's amazing. I am in love with the bag, it is so awesome. I had been searching for a bag like this for some time but couldn't find anything that I liked. That was before I came across your video. I couldn't find waxed canvas so I used a normal fabric and fused some interfacing to make it a bit more sturdy and I'm happy to say that it worked. Thank you so much, Rosie.

G'day Rosie, thank you for a fantastic tutorial.
It is by far the best one I've seen on CZcams for a messenger bag.
I sincerely appropriate all the effort you put in.
Having watched it, I've decided that when I make mine, after cutting everything out, but before construction, I'll scrunch up the waxed canvas and flatten it out, to give it an aged look.
    Your bag is amazing.
    Thank you again.
    Regards, Karen

Hi Rosie! Thank you for this beautiful bag pattern and instructional video. My all time favorite purse design is where there is a zippered wallet pocket attached to the front of the bag. I find I lose wallets, but when there is a zippered pocket on the outside of the purse I don’t forget to put my card away either. Would you consider making an instructional video with this feature?

But I’m working on it ! If you were to put a closure on it what would you recommend? Thank you for being so generous in these crazy times we are living in. This will surely keep us very busy. • @RosiesArtStudio
      @RosiesArtStudio  Před 4 lety +7

Carpenters have a saying...measure twice, cut once. I try to remember that when I am cutting out my pieces, but I still mess up sometimes. For a closure, I would use thumb (press) locks or magnetic snaps. I have already made a couple with the thumb locks. Just take your time making the bag and you will do fine. I have had to learn to enjoy each step of the process and not race through steps I do not like. Sewing is a process...not a race. Have fun with it.

I didn't have Decovil so I used double sided Pellon foam for the divider and it worked quite well and fusible fleece for the front and back lining. I LOVE it!!! Hi Rosie. Thank you for sharing your excellent pattern and video.
I didn't think I could follow such a complex design and get a good result but I am 90% there having finished the exterior and just need to finish the interior lining/pockets etc and strap.
It looks amazing.. I used 20 oz waxed canvas which presented some challenges being so heavy but by making a few subtle changes I am nearly there. Keep up the fantastic work and thank you again. If I was to make any suggestion could I ask that you slow down the video at those points where you are flipping fabric/layers over as it can be hard to follow at times. I know I can slow down the video but that can be difficult on a tablet when you are trying to sew.
    Best wishes.
    Dave
