As someone who has been a beginner for a couple of decades, memorizing the five pentatonic positions without making much in the way of music, I really appreciate this lesson. It's stuff I should have figured out myself, but it's nice to have someone give me a dope slap, and say, "this is how you make it sound like music." Thanks!
Good one Timothy!
I'm right with you on that account!
@TimothyMoran this is so funny. a beginner for decades, relatable.
LOL. I dont feel so bad being a complete beginner for 2 years!
Beginner for 40 years but i stole a couple of Lightnin Hopkins licks early and have fun with that. The stuff he shows here is already too much dry theory for me, no patience for that stuff. Probably a reason why i stay a beginner.
Second that motion.
This is a great lesson. I appreciate your minimalistic approach to soloing for beginners.
Excellent lesson David, really helps out with the Pentatonic conundrum.
Every aspiring guitarist should watch this great common sense video before they get well and truly trapped in the maze of the 5 boxes. The countless videos "teaching" said boxes are actually doing a disservice IMHO - they bring "The Emperors' new clothes" to mind. Thank you David.
As always, great advice and very capably presented. Thanks, David.
I have never thought in terms of boxes to learn scale patterns. Just think intervals and their location to each other. E.g. flat7 two frets back from root. 5th one string above root, 4th one string below etc. Applies anywhere on the neck. Just need to be aware of one fret difference when crossing the b string
Really well explained. What a moment of enlightenment!
Tremendous guidance for playing music!! Thank You!
Thankyou. Always a pleasure. The 1 and ,2 and 3 and 4 and 1 technique really hit home.
Super lesson. Clarity and simple examples. Thank you !
Great concepts, explained very well!
If I only woulda had this lesson 30 yrs ago. 😄
I appreciated this lesson.
Thank you. Looking forward to more.
Thank you for making this less complicated and very sensible
THANK YOU!!!! Finally makes sense. Playing with purpose.
This is really helpful. Thank you!
You've got me convinced to head over to your Fingerstyle Five and sign up.
Follow a lot of online teachers and found David by chance. exactly what I have been looking for to transfer theory into praxis. Great lesson, great teacher. Thank you
Excellent lesson by a great teacher and player. For anybody who wants to play acoustic - or electric - blues, this is a great starting point. Thank you so much.
Thank you sir, this video has been a game changer for me, subscribed
Thank you, David, this is very helpful!

And the light bulb is on. Finally best lesson for the beginners like myself. Thanks.
Wow, thanks so much! That is really useful!
Thanks so much! This is very interesting and helpful!
This really is a GREAT LESSON! A real breakthrough in my thinking. Going back and review your TrueFire material. Thanks.
Great stuff. 👍. Thank you.!
Another great lesson, David. Thanks! A nice, clear way of understanding the music of the pentatonic scale, and once I actually made the effort [...and it doesn't take very long.....] to learn the fretboard, it just becomes so much easier to understand something like this. All those patterns that just repeat all over the neck. Yep... learn the fretboard! Being able to see the notes and all those patterns is truly wonderful...... thanks for all your work, David.
Very clear and helpful, thank you.
Really nice lesson, thanks.
That was really helpful, thanks a lot.
Great info, keep it simple !!
thank you. very nice instruction. i like your style. pleasant, instructional, and full of feeling.
Thanks again.
Thank you David
I like your lesson it proofs that simple is better.
Very helpful thank you
Some of the best guitar instruction on the internet!!! : )
This is really helpful 👌🏼
That’s wise. Greetings and thanks from the Netherlands
Sir, you are awesome. Hou teach multiple ways and eventually got to my way of learning. You just took 30 years of struggle from me in a few minutes. Tysm
So glad to hear it!
This is really good stuff.
Very helpful, thx
as we say here in germany: "again what learned" 👍
This lesson was very well explained. thank you, says Judy Corrette in wildwood, Fl
Considering joining.
Great insight. I sure wish someone would have shared this logic with me when I first started learning guitar. It seems so obvious but I couldn't come up with on my own,
awesome thanks
The CZcams algorithm keeps recommending your channel but since I'm hard headed, I've never paid attention.... until now. SUPER helpful, thank you. New subscriber. It' interesting, I'm a couple years along now and what I find is that I definitely learned to play all pentatonic shapes everywhere and at first that was brilliant but as you note in your video, I did feel like it was a bit random. Overtime, I've gotten to the point where I sort of naturally am making solos more musical, but this way of looking at is a huge shortcut. Wish i would have seen this last year (yes I know that would require you to own a time machine to have made the video last year but I have high expectations ;-) )
Years ago I picked up one of your TrueFire lessons. I vaguely remember a story about an old girlfriend just not getting the whole blues thing. Haha! Cool to find you on CZcams now. Subscribed.
Brilliant
great lesson. thanks
Thanks Henriette!!
TY
Cool lesson, thanks@
Thanks for the terrific lesson, David. Appreciate the great info and low fluff content.
Wow David Hamburger! I haven't seen you around in ages, delighted to come across you again! Loved your old Jazz Blues licks videos! Looking forward to watching all these videos now.
Thanks, Mick!
David, Thanks for turning on another lightbulb for me. Very much appreciate the wisdom you share.
Just found your channel and I’m glad I did! I’m another person that can’t really seem to feel confident that I’ve passed the beginner level, even with private lessons and many hour of online instruction.
I’m curious, why didn’t you mention the open E root, or did I miss it?
I've been playing for nigh forty years
At first, this seems boring, but then I realize I'm learning some fundamentals I hadn't known were fundamentals. Go through it a few times. I intend to come back to this quite frequently.
Thats a cool lookin Martin, like it has some stories.
Great ideas here. I’ve never seen the pentatonics presented like this. I Really enjoy your content.
Has anyone ever mentioned your resemblance to Jimmy Fallon?
Great lesson David! Makes me want to put away the Strat and pickup up acoustic. Damn you Man! 😃
Heh heh - my plan is working :-).
Thanks for the lesson.
What model and year is your Martin guitar? It sounds well seasoned.
Fishman mic?
Which Martin is this? Fine sound...
this is pretty much all you need to know. This 'simple' idea leads to authentic finger style blues. It's all there is too it. It's that 'simple'
Great lesson. BTW what is that guitar? Sounds awesome.
Thanks, David. It's a '56 00-18.
Thanks , Mr. Hamburger
Just turned your channel, I hear you
I love this David BUT, it seems all i can do is fall into your phrases, rhythym. Soon as i try to 'vary' those on my own creatively, i can't seem to 'find' anything interesting. How can you help with that?
👊🤘✌
Musician for 35 years and never learned so much in such a short time.
My baby done changed the lock on my back door...
You need more guitars;-)
I’m hoping all those cases are empty 😀.
Tell me where you got the hat. Seriously. 😄
I can't remember the name of the place in Brooklyn where I found it! But you can find similar ones online at J.J. Hatter. You just want to look for something with a diamond crown and a stingy brim. At least, that's what the hat-minded cats call them.
@@FretboardConfidential thanks 👍🏼 like your playing.
What
Why do they all wear the same silly hat?
