I never knew that I needed to hear Frances stretch "road" out to "roh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oad", but it's totally my favorite part of one of my favorite songs of this first half of the year!
I have to admit, in terms of evincing meaning, some of her lyrics are lost on me, they just don't resonate; but nonetheless, I love finding lyrics which fall outside my norm of interpretation. It's a window into a comparatively alien way of seeing the world, which is both confusing and intruiging.
I just found out their lead guitarist is the guy from Algernon Cadwallader. They were an emo/math-rock band from the 2010s, insane energy, super intricate songs. I feel like you can definitely hear his influence in this stuff, combined with France's raw emotion and song writing talent
Just a few minutes after taking them I realized Hundreds of buzzing flies were all over me I looked up and there you were, reading You were on your own, you were on vacation You were on vacation Vacation means "leave" Means "obliterate all prior things" Here, why don't I try Why don't I try to make you mine? Why is a lack of imagination the crime? Why don't I try Why don't I try to make you mine? Why don't I back you up against this moment? So when you finally go And when you choose to go I resume my little road And nobody needs to know Will know that I ever meant to leave My little lower road I watch the bird feeder out back in my parents' yard The weight of that bluejay The bully steals it all And what must happen in your mind When you create those silences Well never mind, never mind, I don't want to see I know it's got nothing to do with me Here, why don't I try Why don't I try to move aside? I'm still soft, I'm still in my prime Why don't I try Why don't I try to move aside I'm still soft, it's still my time And when you finally go When you choose to go I resume my little road And nobody needs to know Will know that I ever meant to meant to leave My little lower road And when you finally go When you choose to go I resume my little road And nobody needs to know Will know that I was only holding your place on this Your little lower road
i've been trying to figure out what this one is about.... to me, it's being in love with someone who just kind of sees you as one option they're not sold on (kind of like "Tibetan Pop Stars"!), and that's what makes her their "little lower road" ... and no one will ever know she ever meant to leave it (dare to try & be w/ this person who's seemingly out of her league or of higher status somehow or something) when they inevitably leave -- she saw it coming; she was only holding their place. maybe i just want it to be that. idk, what y'all think?
i think you're on the same frequency as me on the subject matter. it's a resigning to the fact that this person you love will never be able to meet your needs, nor you theirs. the "they" in this scenario is almost certainly the antagonist in your head, but there needs to be an internalized version of that and not necessarily the reality. you'll keep fucking trying and keep fucking hating yourself over it.
I agree with your interpretation. It reminds me of Morrissey's song "The Loop". That she feels her significant other is above her and her significant other treats her that way by being aloof and going "on vacation", so when he/she leaves, she goes to her sad, little lower road which probably makes her significant other happy in some way. But she realizes at the end that she's just holding the place of the significant other on the little lower road, and from the opening line, it seems that maybe psychedelic drugs were the cause of that epiphany.
I think this song is about a relationship with a musician that got her into music, but that they broke up. The album is about an autobiographical return to the songwriter's town and her feelings around it. I think that the person this song is addressing is the same person the previous song 'look of love' was addressed too, who nursed another person (male) until their death, which caused her to summon the songwriter to her home town. From this perspective, this song is not just about the breakup but about regret and guilt, as the songwriter moved on to a career and out of her home town, the person who she started doing it with stayed. The last lines of the song address the songwriter's feeling of being a secret imposter as the person the song was addressed to leaves her. At least that's my reading
this is so fucking gorgeous. i've been listening to bark the whole day and this is still not only ringing true to as being the best song on the album, but probably the second best hop along song i've ever heard. it breaks my heart and uplifts me every time. this is what music is supposed to do.
Really like the sound, but I think the lyrics need some work. They're relying a bit too much on stock phrasing and exhausted metaphor. I would like a bit more imagery, or if they are going to use abstractions, they need something concrete to ground it. The lyric "keep him back up against this moment" or some such lyric was really good, because the image of being cornered against an abstraction has sufficient concrete visualization to ground and interpret the abstraction of the moment. I'll probably end up listening to this band anyway because it sounds really good (particularly like the singer's voice), but I think they could stand to improve by refining their writing.
I think the album Painted Shut has some really good and somewhat direct lyrics. The song "The Knock" comes to mind, look it up. I still love these lyrics too though lol.
Thanks for the suggestion. Will do. Also, don't get me wrong; the lyrics aren't bad. I'm just saying this genre is largely lyric-centric, so I think they really need to pack a punch. When music utilizes refrain, you get to repeat lyrics quite a bit, which is a convention that demands really good, powerful lyrics that are nuanced and stand up to in-depth analysis. I think some of their lyrics definitely fit that bill, but I think if we're honest here, there are some lines that aren't entirely fresh or surprising. No written work is perfect, of course.

Omg this song punched me in the face - but like in a good way
Tbe world needs more
I like this.
This is good.
I will listen to it again.
I will suggest to others to listen to this as well.
This song is the sound of finally feeling free
Some of Philly's finest right here...
Yip

I love all of her music, old and new. She never lost her charm.
Hyped on the lyrics! It's too easy for people to gloss over the stories she tells.

Known Unkowns great perspective you have there.
Known Unkowns Definitely. Some of her shit is cryptic as fuck, *looks at Get Disowned* but it's fun trying to figure out what the context/meaning is.
Yeah, but not this one, right? It's relatively straightforward and so well done.
I think this one might be about a trip, not a person
This is my favorite song right now
Now this should have a few hundred million views. It's such a pretty song.
This album blew me the f*** away 🖤
goddamn. this is one of the best songs ever created.
Love her voice
SO Much Yes.
Already on my 5th repeat 💖 💕
preordered thank you guys for kicking butt still
best song I've heard this year, love you guys
I LOVE THIS FRICKING SONG
I’ve never heard a rock song so interestingly and intricately arranged, that is at the same time, so emotionally impactful. Their best work to date
I just found out their lead guitarist is the guy from Algernon Cadwallader. They were an emo/math-rock band from the 2010s, insane energy, super intricate songs.
I feel like you can definitely hear his influence in this stuff, combined with France's raw emotion and song writing talent
So damn happy I pre-ordered the album. It's looking to be fantastic so far, I can't wait
Coming to Des Moines in August can't wait
Grooves so hard live
Me encanta ♡
Awesome song
First listen I wasn't too impressed and now a month later and I listen daily
Just a few minutes after taking them I realized
Hundreds of buzzing flies were all over me
I looked up and there you were, reading
You were on your own, you were on vacation
You were on vacation
Vacation means "leave"
Means "obliterate all prior things"
Here, why don't I try
Why don't I try to make you mine?
Why is a lack of imagination the crime?
Why don't I try
Why don't I try to make you mine?
Why don't I back you up against this moment?
So when you finally go
And when you choose to go
I resume my little road
And nobody needs to know
Will know that I ever meant to leave
My little lower road
I watch the bird feeder out back in my parents' yard
The weight of that bluejay
The bully steals it all
And what must happen in your mind
When you create those silences
Well never mind, never mind, I don't want to see
I know it's got nothing to do with me
Here, why don't I try
Why don't I try to move aside?
I'm still soft, I'm still in my prime
Why don't I try
Why don't I try to move aside
I'm still soft, it's still my time
And when you finally go
When you choose to go
I resume my little road
And nobody needs to know
Will know that I ever meant to meant to leave
My little lower road
And when you finally go
When you choose to go
I resume my little road
And nobody needs to know
Will know that I was only holding your place on this
Your little lower road
Sara G it's a lyric video, so...okay.
We appreciate the effort though keep that same energy
You would not believe your eyes...

This album is great. Lots of great songs on here. I hope we get a few music videos. This last song is on repeat right now.

celia inside Little lower road reminds me of literature that says we have a sacred river flowing through us. She follows her unconscious
She's tripping and just mentioning the things she's sees during her trip.

Very nice - reminds me of the early Cardigans-Records from the 90's - when they were good...
(Pat, Switzerland)
This song is so fucking good
This is some good fuckin music yo
Puta el tema qlo bueno, hace rato no me gustaba tanto una banda
I feel like this about both people being the others second choice and it's very sad.
I also saw the flies after taking them, I suppose it's a metaphor of staying stagnant in mundane routine.
NPR shows snippet music.
