  • This video is a beginners guide to mold making for resin casting. The goal here is to take the intimidation out of mold making. Resin casting can be intimidating enough in itself. In this video I show you how to make 4 different kinds of molds and we discuss a few other ways to make molds. I show you how to use cups with mold release applied to make molds. We make a silicone mold for resin casting. I make 2 molds from corrugated plastic. Finally we make a huge resin mold from HDPE or High Density Polyethylene. Resin mold making can be simple and fun. This video is proof that is is easy, and you can get incredible resin castings from simple molds.

    Hi Jake. I have to say I love your teaching style - the way you explain things so well and give us little tips along the way. I found your video very calming, and it did for me just exactly what you wanted it to do. It made the process of making our own moulds much less intimidating, which will be so useful to me since I don't have much money to spend on expensive moulds. At the very least it inspired me to have a go at it myself, and at the best I just feel so empowered to take control over my crafting. Thank you so much for your generosity in showing us all this for free. 😉😁

    Another tip for screwing into the plastic is go slow and pull your bit out half way through each and allow any heat the dissipate :) alternatively you could use threaded inserts and use machined screws making it a lot more viable for deconstruction of the mold when not in use or for removing your casted projects

    Soooo I bought some rectangle ice cube molds that are very thin walled and flexible silicone, not ideal because of the flex, but I want to try and add some more silicone to them to beef them up. With the item with voids to be coated with resin inside the bag and then put rice outside the bag inside the cylinder? Since the plastic bag holds up to high oven temps, or does the chemical reaction breaks down the bag and cause leaks? Just an idea to reduce waisted resin.

      I usually remove the bark but if it’s not loose at all you can stabilize it... that doesn’t guarantee it won’t come off though.

    Do you need to spray something on that hdpe before pouring the resign to keep it from sticking or is the surface so smooth it just comes right out?

    • @JakeThompson

      I use mold release on plastic or silicone.. I showed the products at the beginning of the video. There are links to the mold releases in the description of the video. It will come out of hdpe but it’s way better with release and the mold will last longer 👍

    Enjoyed seeing this video as a beginner. Do have a question, can you use HDPE to make a round 12 inch mold, 4 inches in depth? My pressure pot is 12 1/4 in diameter and I'd like to use it's dimensions and depth and have a reusable mold. Am I asking too much for a mold???? Thank you as I learning from your videos and gave it a thumbs up!

    Hi!!
    I am trying to figure out how to make a silacone mold for a taper candle. What do you suggest for a housing for a taper candle? I want to be able to pour resin into the silacone to make a taper out of resin so it will look like a lucite candle.

      You can use lots of things to make a form to pour silicone into.. you can use a plastic cup, or make a box out of corrugated plastic and hot glue

    I’m curious if the corrugated board would cause the resin to not be smooth and flat. I’m making a one time resin epoxy pour to hold my daughters graduation leis and I’m having a tough time finding a mold big enough (12x11x3). I can’t fathom spending $150 for a decent mold for something I’m only doing once. I also don’t want to have to cut down the outer edges by using a plastic tote or something similar. What would you suggest?

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  Před rokem

      The corrugated plastic will leave it wavy. You can use HDPE like I did in this video. You could try to make your own silicone mold. I think the easiest and cheapest is to oversize it with the corrugated plastic and cut it down to size and sand it. This is one of those pick your poison things I think.

      Smooth-On is generally a great brand with some good options for silicone. I use Rebound 25 because it has a great balance of rigidity and flexibility and it lasts for many casts.
