Tomo, I think maybe when people ask about motivation it comes from how hard it is to master all of the complexities of music and playing the guitar. For example, I am an avid golfer. Over the last three years I have worked very hard to improve my game. I have made tremendous progress and am really enjoying the entire process. It is a lot of work but I make progress and can enjoy my new skills.
With music, I have spent many more hours and years and feel far less progress. I can't really play guitar much better than I did ten or twenty years ago. I know a lot more, but I still really can't create with music anywhere near the way I want. While golf is not easy to master, music is far harder. There is so much that must be ingrained deeply enough to have it come out automatically. And when you begin to really own some part of music there are ten other parts to work on. It always seems far out of reach. It is so hard to move with the music and hear melodies while those chords keep changing every four beats. It is an overwhelming task that, despite all of the hours and years, I feel only slightly closer to than I was before.
I think that is where people, myself included, lose motivation. I have quit guitar many times after two or three years of concentrated effort when I feel that I am spending a great deal of effort and accomplishing very little. I am starting again this year and am hopeful again. I recognize that I have months and probably years to get to where I want to be. I will be more patient (though I think I have been very patient many times already) and work enough to finally accomplish enough mastery to be able to do what I want. I just want to be able to play some lovely chords and improvise for my own pleasure. I have no interest in performing. I just want to enjoy the guitar and music.
I hope this explains why other people struggle with motivation sometimes. You may never have felt this way, but I would bet that many of your viewers have.

Thank you for sharing! I never tried to play golf... I already know that .. it will take some time to practice and learn.
Guitar playing has two types: 1) Easy to learn quick. Fast satisfaction and related guitar.. amps, effects, different colors... fun!
      2) To master this instrument deeply... very difficult to do. because you need to commit yourself and learn all important foundation which not exactly same sounds as performed music.
If someone only watch CZcams videos or any social medias.. then the result is 50/50 because there are correct information and wrong/funny information. Guitar Teacher no need any license ! So very dangerous to believe so quickly! Almost as if you are picking your heart doctor by CZcams just because FREE!

My job is to make people happy with guitar! I really feel that .. that's my fate. Everyone has something very special. Let me help you! No need to perform in public. No need to be certain ways. Just play it and have more fun. Still need to make things, directions clear in order to succeed! This happens a lot with my Berklee students. First lesson homework is my questionnaire that each students to fill out by pen. This way I really understand each student's personality and choice of words, the way of expression. The material is good, how to practice, how to learn, how to set specific goals... those area are very bad! That's why it won't go anywhere. My job is to make each students to notice their personality and how they think. I love helping all my students. This is my joy and so much reward!

I owned a music store for most of my working life (I’m now retired). Over the years I have met some very good musicians but very few good teachers. I have just found “guitar wisdom” and have to say you may be the best teacher I have seen (online or off) … thank you for sharing.

Micro goal setting works for me. I ignore the big goal that's years down the road and just commit to achieving very small goals each week with daily practice.

  • @thumplife792
    @thumplife792 Před rokem +12

Edit: I should add, what prompted me to go back and fill in my gaps was barely having any improvement over a decade. I told myself, well, I can go back an do it the right way and be a much better musician 5 years from now, or I can continue on this path and be the same guitar player I currently am 5 years from now. It takes patience and being honest with yourself.
I found motivation by going back and filling in my gaps and being patient with myself. No more studying a different thing everyday. I play about 3 hours a day, I was obviously doing something wrong because I was not improving. That caused me to get burnt out. I found fun when I became more structured with my practice, and rediscovered my love for the instrument instead of being frustrated. I spent weeks only playing Dm7, Gmaj7, and Cmaj7 triads on the top 3 strings. I was using Band-in-a-Box to loop a ii-V-I in Cmaj. By the time I added the next string grouping I had the E, B, and G string group solidly under my fingers. I had failed to learn them that well multiple times before. I would practice them for two or three days and not touch them again for weeks, or months.
Take the message Tomo says to heart. Read his shirt in this video and internalize it. When I was in boot camp they told us "the days drag, but the weeks fly by." That is how it works with guitar. The first time I revisited practice videos was at the 6 month mark. I knew I had improved, but it was mind blowing by how much. I considered myself an early-advanced guitarist with blues/rock when I started using Tomo's approach. Now I see I was a solid intermediate that had some knowledge gaps. It's been a few years now and I can't fathom how I didn't realize this sooner. I spent 10 years at the same level. In the last 3 years I have improved more than I had in the previous 15. It's hard not to be motivated when you're getting small victories all the time that lead up to big ones.

Don't use any backing tracks! Instead, you prepare your own rhythm guitar parts with a metronome. You can record that part to support your triads or soloing practice session. "Learn" "Prepare" then "Work" Nothing you can start like.... just jump in with backing tracks!

After 11 years of lessons, studying production in my free time (because I don't live from music), music theory, arrangement, recently I feel I put more time to study than the results/benefits I gain. Not sure at this point if I need a break or just give up because it's not a hobby anymore or I have high expectations from it. I don't enjoy playing anymore and I feel I've invested too much in this. Maybe a break is all I need.

Motivation is easy for me. Once I determine upon waking that I once again can function under my own power I am very Motivated to live another day fully. I truly do not know when I go to sleep if when I awaken I will be able to walk. ALS has a vicious history in our family. There are no early warnings. There are no test. So yeah, I am motivated.
Firstly - Whom are you playing for? Answer that to yourself.
Some are self-motivated like a Monk. They are able to self-recognize success and need not an audience. Others need a Video History. I use Video to prove to others how bad I was 2 years ago ( 4 open chords 4 strums each - muted - scratchy- nasty in 12 seconds). I am the odd one. Less than 2 years later 240bpm - 4 chords in 1 second. Now I have the rest of my life to clean that up and play with triads. I love the sound of Do Mi Ti (R-M3-7) triads.
Most need and should either Video or Audio Only record practice sessions at least weekly. Everyone has a Cell Phone. First time you do and you watch you will be upset on how bad it sounds. in a few weeks (with practice) you will look at past recordings and Laugh at how bad that was. Now grateful for those foundations.
Only you can decide if you want to be a copiest or artist. Either is fine. Some people make a wonderful showing of Covering Artist. Others seek Intervals and creating. Both types are Musicians. Both have the same basic foundations. If you can tune an instrument and play a single note clean - even an open string. You are a Musician.
I don't believe much about setting Goals. Humans tend to set goals too high so failure is eminent - the excuse is already written and ready. Be realistic. This week I am going to learn the names of the Strings. By the end of the Month the Names of the Whole Notes on the E string while I use a metronome to count and strum that string as I call out the Note Names. If you get done sooner - fantastic you've a knack for that - if it takes longer figure out why( work, illness, bad sleep, time management) what ever it is either adjust your life or the next goal. Give yourself a little longer and make the goal smaller. The more you foundationally know the better you will be at being able to set a goal. Its like, how do you know how many times your going to have to hit that nail into the lumber? How heavy is the hammer- How dense is the wood- how big is the nail? After a some experience you can glance at the nail and lumber and just know you will need to hit it 4 times with Your hammer.
Musical success happens in very small segments that overlap and piece together into Your Opus.
Am I (me personally) good enough to play songs in a band on a stage. NO.. (I don't know any songs really) Can I and have I gone busking and had tips? Yes! Playing slow and smooth intervals with a Spanish/Renaissance influence and no meter or key. My rules.
Peace be with you. Play Hard.

Thank you for the content Mr Fujita, I've been playing for a little over 9 years, as of the last 2 years I no longer have a teacher as I felt sufficiently prepared to trace my own path, I feel like the more we develop our abilities, the more we demand for ourselves, it's like reaching for the top of the mountain and then seeing it grow taller the closer we get to the peak. The comment about not overdoing things feels spot on! I spent a long time doing an 8h practice routine and the more I pushed that the more I felt myself getting burnt out, the more I relaxed and stop being so demanding to myself the more I felt like the practice was effective. I guess our biggest enemy is ourselves, our anxiety to get results when we should give time. "Don't worry, don't compare, don't expect too fast"

2:46 : I feel before I continue, to share, I have been a musician since childhood on saxophone, Berklee on a scholarship and all, but I didn't really 'get it' until I picked up guitar in late 2019. Total born again musician on guitar.
But now I have this experience, that in the beginning, practically, you advance so fast. You blow through all the beginner and intermediate stuff. It's so easy.
Then it gets slower and slower.
Most guitar players, they're stuck in the middle stage. They master all the basic skills within six months. They can play most pop tunes, not like the pros, but 'good enough.' or so we think.
Trust me, there's this abyss you need to cross, and on the other side is pure joy as an advanced player.
    It's very liberating.

Especially at Berklee and the like, it's easy to feel intimidated. You just moved from where you are the local genius to suddenly below average. That's true at any elite school or situation. Tomo I think I have the answer, at least this is the answer for me.
    □ Not giving a sh*t about if other people think your playing is good or not, but at the same time always improving.
    □ Listening to lots of music and learning it.
    □ Realising that if you want to be great one day you have to practise, otherwise you would have wasted your time and have lots of regret.
    □ Just picking up the guitar. I might away from my guitar and not feel good about my level of playing. But then I pick it up and I am like "damn I am actually pretty good".

Hi Mr Tomo. I'm 20 and been playing since I got my first guitar at 14. I got into J rock and two years ago, I started learning and sharing guitar tab covers in my channel for fun. I just loved the guitar styles of the songs and even learned the techniques, and musical patterns in my improvisations and share them for my viewers.
Lately, I've been struggling to keep up with it due to the hard work making tabs, analyzing the original guitar parts, video editing, track making etc. and I'm losing interest in playing guitar and music altogether. I also hear other guitarists that are better than me which makes me feel quite inferior.
To add on, I had some negative experiences in the past with a huge band club organization in college where the toxic and fast paced work culture drained me both mentally and emotionally, ultimately leading me to quit.
Basically, i'm at crossroads now, unsure whether I should try re-igniting my passion for guitar or if it's time to focus on other interests. I feel like my skill in guitar is wasted if I stopped.
I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance. Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

I ended up gaining decent skill at picking specific strings, down & up picking, i can use my pinky pretty well and can play 2 songs rather well but had zero guitar fundamentals(outside of being able to play a D,A, and E chord & switch between them semi quick, but not coordinated enough to strum a song). I got down on myself because i felt like i had gotten nowhere in 2 years and your channel really helped lift my spirits and also helped me refocus on actually learning guitar. I love music and so often i will hear a song or a riff that i want to learn and feel a better sense of purpose on my learning Journey.

I had just spent a productive 90 minutes today taking a jazz blues exercise in F I had worked on this week with my tutor and re-voiced it into Bb. with the goal of finding appropriate root,3,7 voicings and inversions that require minimal left hand movement. My brain was starting to get tired but I was about to start on my triad exercises. I decided it was better to take a break, watched this and it has already helped enormously as it reminded me of the need to recharge before going again.

Tomo: My main issue is this; whenever I do discover a great new lesson (progression, solo, technique etc.) I do get highly motivated and dig right in but ..........much like a kid with a new exciting toy.....when I should be doubling down and practice, I get bored, lose interest and move on. The other issue is instantly recalling great lick ideas on the fly. Much like those comedy sitcoms where George Constanza wishes he'd said something else during a sound argument well after the fact, I wonder what it takes to be able to freely play cool established licks whenever it's my turn to solo. I’ve been loving these videos that have been more philosophical. My issue is not motivation. I love playing guitar, and I want to pick it up every second I can. But my issue is not having the time to play, and not having well-defined goals. I want to be a better guitarist, but I also want to be a better songwriter. When I actually get the opportunity to practice, I just want to do everything, which will often lead to an inefficient practice session. I’m going to try to use a notebook and plan out my practices better as you suggested, and hopefully that will improve my efficiency. Thank you Tomo for sharing your wisdom with us.

You can think about a few different goals. 1) Dream goal 2) Realistic goal 3) Simplest goal etc. That's why I start with two items for daily routine. You can even do each one for two minutes but you have to believe these are so great 100%! If you even doubt a little (Is this working?) then no good! You need to fool yourself! Better song writer! Triads! Transcribe any great songs that you love! Do everything won't work! Without my little note book, I can not accomplish my life in general. You're very welcome!

My inspirations are Stevie ray Vaughan and John Mayer
I often wonder what the process was like when writing songs like Pride and Joy.

I’m really enjoying these early lectures Sensei Tomo. They are helping my day significantly. I was actually hoping you would post one this morning haha. I actually took yesterday off to relax a little, but normally I practice every day especially during the week. This week has been a bit exhausting for me so I was a little burnt out. Sharing your daily is very very helpful you have no idea. I would like to share my daily with you to see what you think. I usually get up around 4:30-5:00am and start my practice which consists of a Chromatic warm-up. I warm up with the spider walks, then take out the metronome to practice Scales and Modes for about 15-30 minutes. After that, I take my kids to school. When I get back, I’m working on the CAGED system/Chord inversions for about an hour. This I do with pure study and a backing track to stay on time…. Next I’ve been studying and learning Eric Clapton unplugged Album with sheet music an Audio. Then, I do an hour workout/eat lunch. After that, I do a 15-20 minute singing worm-up, then practice a set-list I’m getting ready for a gig…. HaHa, what are your thoughts on my routine…. Thanks again so much for your time and expertise. I appreciate you very much 🙏

Thanks for sharing. So happy to hear that you enjoy my talk video. Maybe some of your part of routine a little too long. Do something one hour is way too much! The most is 30 minuets and try to finish one subject. I recommend to practice 1212... chromatic. Avoid anything too difficult ones. Modes no need more than 10 minutes. Stay focus on intervals on one string approach more. Avoid anything scale shapes. (too easy!) Do not learn anything from diagrams! Don't think CAGED shapes. Learn triad inversions (thinking about each intervals)Avoid visual shapes as much as possible! You're welcome! Do not use any backing tracks from any source but you can practice rhythm guitar with a metronome and you can create your own backing tracks playing by YOU & A metronome then so productive!

Scales, arpreggios, triads and chord shapes. (caged, major, minor and diminished) Then I work on what ever idea , concept, riff whatever that caught my eye (ear) . I subscribed to your channel years ago becaus you always have something to work on. Often I find its not a new thing but a different way to look at it. I play for me. I quit the stage years ago because I just don't enjoy it any more. I play for the enjoyment the guitar has always brought me. Im always working on my own songs. Thats where the real enjoyment is for me. When Its right and good I am one happy old guitar player. I must know thousands of songs by artist but I don't play threm very often.
