i just got my wife the rock creek. my wife and i will only drive national park double track roads than can be tricky but not past the level the nissan can handle. 3rd row is good for our two teens and their friends. it is fast, handles very well and is very comfortable. ride feels solid when going over bumps slow or fast. my main complaint is the front passenger seat is manual and set up like a car. You cannot move it up if you want to ride more upright. there is plenty of headroom as the driver's moves up to have more a truck driver posture. the 4runner costs about 4-5 grand more. IMO, the 4runner is a better off road adventure car but not as good for daily driving. i also have a 2019 frontier crew cab mid-night so I get that truck feeling you have with the 4runner. both are excellent depending on your needs.

Bring back the Xterra as a budget option to these crazy wrangler/bronco/4R prices. The Xterra was always marketed as a basic everything you need nothing you don’t vehicle. Come on Nissan! Frontier platform and styling with a 6-speed manual!

    The Toyota 4Runner runs forever.
The 4Runner is a real SUV with body on frame ruggedness. Engine is longitude with driveshaft to rear wheels.
Nissan Pathfinder is glorified Crossover unibody with horizontal engine driving primarily front wheels similar to most modern front wheel drive passenger cars.
People noticed Pathfinder has better ride but none understands why. The Toyota 4Runner built for a duty and it excels at what it is built for.

Enjoyed the video and the format. Point taken regarding this being less of a comparison video and more of combining two into one. I do see the Pathfinder has no business venturing into terrain that a 4Runner was built to conquer. If you cannot have both, then I guess it all comes down to your priorities and spousal consent i.e. compromise 🙂

These are both great vehicles with a historic off-road pedigree. You really did a great review as an owner of one of the contestants. Very unbiased. I am shopping both of these vehicles. I think I am probably going to go with the 4Runner Nightshade or Limited so I can get the 3rd row and slap some oversized BFgoodrich Mud terrain or all terrain tires on that puppy.

Start by saying I love toyota, reliability is hard to beat on all their models. If youre going to buy 1 car every 20 years, Toyota is it. However, Nissans Drive and Ride better on the road, IMHO. Get the Nissan if you trade every 7 years or 100k, Get the Toyota 4R if you want to keep it longer and you're ok with a truck ride and feel. I personally don't like the ride, steering, or feel, of the 4 runner, or the Tacoma. (No offense intended to those who do, I'm sure I'll be told I have though). Now that Nissan has Auto transmission, unless youre going down rock crawling roads, the Nissan should do fine. I've driven and rented them all, Nissan good for the money and most peoples needs. Avoid the Nissan CVT!! Finally, if you want to spend most time off-road, and you can put up with subpar highway manners, get your 4 runner.

I think because the 4runners aren't always going for the newest style and tech, long term the look holds up a lot better. All the models age really well and hold so much value. Wish they didn't because I want some of the older gens! I love my 5th gen, imagine it will be a sought after classic years from now, especially since it is probably the last ultra reliable gas true off roader

I’m always surprised when I hear the mileage people get with their 4Runner. I have a 2015 Limited with 160k miles. Leveled the fron and off-road tires and still average 19.5. To get 16mpg I would either have to be off-roading or driving in traffic with a heavy foot. Highway mileage is around 21.

That is far from Nissan's most capable Pathfinder. It actually likely the *least* capable Pathfinder, unless you define capable as moving 7 people around while using the least fuel.
That's the reason why the Patfinder got neutered in 2013, cause of the complaints about fuel economy. You don't buy an off-road capable, truck based SUV and the complain about fuel economy. It's part of the game if you want something rugged and designed to work.

That’s what I was thinking but apparently a lot of people are cross shopping them! If you wouldn’t really off road in either of them, the Nissan is the way to go. I’ve driven mine on the sand dunes and in snow and it does great. It just doesn’t have enough clearance to go on any kind of serious trail though. Fire roads are the most it can do. The 4Runner on the other hand can go pretty much anywhere and there are so many mods and parts for them you can build it to pretty much any capability you want.
