    My Maine Coon Chester and I are now in the stage of me letting him wear the harness around the house. He is now playing and eating while wearing the harness. Next I will use the leash while we walk in the house. Soon we will try going outside on the leash. This advice was helpful and makes me feel we are on the right track

    Ive recently started taking my cat outside. At first getting the harness on was very hard. She was biting, scratching and wouldn't stay still. Once I got it on she just flopped on the floor and wouldn't move. She's mostly comfortable in her harness now and I always give her treats when she's wearing it. I've been able to get her outside but she won't go past the end of the driveway. She's slowly been going further though so hopefully soon I can get her to go father than that! We usually stay out for as long as she wants to. I let her in whenever she goes back to the door. So far Id definitely recommend taking your cat for a walk

      How do you deal with training two of them at once? I’ve got two Maine Coon kittens who are now 6 months old, and I *really* want to get to a point where we can go outside together. They’re both very eager to explore - I’m happy to sometimes let them stretch their legs running up and down the communal hallway shared with 7 other flats (a safe enclosed space, unless someone comes home and opens the door onto the hallway from the stairwell, but they’re also scaredy-cats about unexpected things and noises, so when that happens it’s usually a quick way to get them to run back inside 😹 ) and hiding from each other in doorways then stalking and pouncing, it’s an incredibly dull environment compared to outside! They spend hours sitting at the windows, very interested in all the birds and squirrels and insects right outside in the trees (I’m on the 4th floor - 5th floor in American), and are especially mesmerised by any insects or happenings right outside the windows (they’re “window hunting”)… but their desire to get out there and take a closer look seemingly isn’t anchored in reality about physics and gravity, because if they did somehow manage to jump out of the window opening and onto the window sill a couple of feet below (it’s a floor-to-ceiling-ish window that only opens part way up), it is NOT wide enough for any kind of safe landing for them, and is also absolutely not wide enough to then jump back in the window, and there’s nowhere for them to go but a LONG way down to the ground! (The trees right outside definitely aren’t close enough to jump into, except maybe for a squirrel). So basically that’s my worst fear 🙀 I have heavy-duty metal framed strong mesh screens up, but to open or close the window (or to attach my janky portable A/C unit which has recently become necessary) I have to take the screen down very briefly, and its not always possible to close them safely in another room first. Anyway, very long story 🙊 but my hope is that if we purposely go outside through the door on a leash, it will give them an outlet for their going-outside desires and they’ll be less interested in trying to go out through the window!
      I’ve just got a clicker with telescopic target attached, but I haven’t worked out how best to start using it when there are two of them. My flat’s pretty small, so it’s really difficult to get either one of them on their own (and if I did, the other would be very upset on the other side of the door about missing out!), plus the click would probably be audible to the other one anyway. I’m going to keep looking for videos of how people recommend dealing with training two cats at once, but I’m always keen to hear other stories! Plus I haven’t yet worked out how I’d go outside with both of them safely, other than maybe also have a carrier/cat backpack with me where one could be secured while the other is out. It might just be impractical to do that with two cats and one human, at least at first while they’re getting used to it all… but I think there’s also value in them getting observational learning by seeing what the other does, and they can potentially learn faster together! I have a lot of questions and am nowhere near actually going outside until I figure out how to do it safely, but I also want to hurry up while they’re still young! 😸

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  Před 2 lety +2

      Excellent question-there's no foolproof way to ensure that your cat will never be attacked or frightened by a dog, but you can reduce the chances of such an encounter by going to places where there are few dogs (and especially few off-leash dogs) and remaining vigilant. Keeping your cat on a relatively tight lead can help you to respond quickly if something scary does happen, and having a carrier or backpack available also helps to restrain your cat.

    I wish there was more info on the walking part. My cat is comfortable on a harness but I have a hard time walking her. She likes to leap against the leash which snatches her back midair. She never wants to come back home and hates getting picked up. She tries to go under fences and gets frustrated when I don't let her. I try to let her explore and do her own thing but I would like her to follow me one day without having to bend every 2 seconds for a treat. It's super sketchy and frustrating! More walking info please.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  Před 2 lety

      Hi Nick, that's a good question. When I used to walk a kitten, we had success going with two people-one to hold the leash, and the other to walk ahead and encourage the cat to move towards them. If your cat is very attached to you or a family member, they'll likely want to follow them around, especially when in an unfamiliar location (and will spend less time thinking about how you're following them). Treats are another good incentive to get your cat moving forward, and you can toss them ahead of you or work them into your partner walking technique.

      @@NicksStuff Hmm, good point. I wonder if just sitting still with a longer leash and letting your cat quietly explore "on their own" a bit will help to break the connection between the leash and you a little bit and make it easier to continue in the future. I'm not sure; perhaps someone with more walking experience could jump in and provide more tips. Good luck!

      @@AllAboutCatsYT I was going to get the Petkit Eversweet 3 after seeing The Cat Butler use and recommend it, but it’s £60 for the 1.35L version and £80 for 1.8L! 🙀 The Eversweet 2 is around £45 here, but I ended up finding the Catit “Fresh and Clear Stainless Steel Fountain”, which was £35 for 2L, and while it doesn’t have the smart features, it otherwise ticked all the boxes I was after. I’d be interested in seeing how it stacks up to your rigorous tests 😺
      I love the updated article - very thorough, and gave me some more things to think about that I hadn’t considered. The Catit one I have doesn’t have a pre-filter either, and that wasn’t even on my radar before. We’re doing pretty well so far though and haven’t had much of a problem with hair or debris, and have only been changing the filter every ~6 weeks - this may change in the winter when they’re a bit older and potentially have a thicker and longer coat! It’s absolutely silent though, both in terms of the motor and sounds of running water, which was important to me.
      It’s interesting you say the Cat Mate is ultra-quiet - my ex had this about 5 years ago, and went through at least three replacement motors because they were very loud, becoming more so over time (even after cleaning), and would break down and fail completely too. That warranty came in handy! It was also a pain to clean with lots of nooks and crannies (though running it through the dishwasher might have been the better plan), and it would quickly get nasty and slimy and discoloured. It sounds like a totally different fountain to the one you reviewed! So from this I’m guessing/hoping this means they’ve taken on board all the feedback about the issues, and have made substantial changes to improve it 😊

      Regarding an automatic litter system that works well with pine litter, I haven't found any that would be classified as truly automatic. The closest is the Tidy Cats Breeze system, which is a sifting system that makes it a bit easier to use pine pellets. You can see our review of it here: czcams.com/video/4cZ9aOdYey0/video.html

      This is one reason why I won't walk my harness trained cat anywhere but my backyard. There are lots of dogs being walked at all times of the day and night and I'm sure not all are friendly toward cats. Also, he is allowed off leash because he stays close and I don't want him to think I am allowing him to expand his territory.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  Před 2 lety

      That's a very good question. It really depends on your relationship with your cat and how fast you can respond. Some people would be able to react quickly and grab their cat, but there's no guarantee that this will always work. Be careful about where you take your cat and always be vigilant.

      @OutdoorBengal Před 2 lety +2

      Hello Erin, I have seen PLENTY adventure cats amongst Mia's friends and just a fraction of them are bengals.
      Rosettes don't make the adventure cat, training does. You just see more bengals outdoors because of the pygmalion effect:
      1) People who want to adventure get bengal cats.
      2) They put time and effort to help the cat be comfortable with the lifestyle.
      3) Others see the cat's success and link that success to the rosettes or the breed.
      4) The pygmalion effect keeps going as other motivated adventure cat parents buy bengals.
      If you have a cat and want to try walking them on a leash, I'll be very happy to help you out!
