- Hey everyone, thanks for watching. Sorry about the long wait between tutorials, but I should be back to a regular schedule now. This is my take on the Trollbloods Mountain King, which is from the new line of Gargantuans in the Hordes system.

It's been 9 years. Still amazing. You should come back man, you made some really amazing content and I think you'd easily get Paterson supporters.
It’s Amazing how this video was made 11 years ago! And it’s as good as the best CZcams influencers today. Absolutely excellent work.
Thank you!! Sometimes I think about coming back to CZcams. We shall see. Appreciate the kind words!
I miss you dude went back to this troll video inspired me all them years ago.
Thanks, Jegashamash! Trolls are the most fun to paint and play, in my opinion. Good luck with them!
Wow man you're a hell of a painter. A coworker invited me to get into Warmachine/Hordes at the local game store, and I ordered a trollbloods battle group starter yesterday. With the time and care put into this hobby in assembly and painting alone I can see why people grow to care about their armies so much. Hoping I'll catch the bug. Subscribed.
...that is amazing, plus i have learned more from watching you than i have in the past year on my own learning the tricks of the hobby. You must be an amazing teacher.
@IKPainter thanks for the kind words! I have actually experienced exactly what you are describing. I have found disassembling and reassembling the airbrush fixes it usually. I have also found that it will eventually just go away on its own. Not sure what causes it but it hasnt been a big inconvenience for me yet!
This video gives me hope, I watched from start to finish and at no point did I think "wow, I can't do that"!
For me it was the complete opposite. I sat here thinking "wow, I could never in a million years do this!"
I actually used to use a Paasche Talon, but this one is a Harder and Steenbeck Infinity with the 0.15mm needle. It's a really great airbrush (but so was the Paasche Talon!) Thank you very much for watching, and thank you for the very kind words!
Awesome tutorial. I just bought a Cryx Battlegroup, becuase I seen a couple of guys playing at my local comic book store. They got me into it, and these videos are giving me some ideas on how to paint. Much appreciated.
Good choice of music, very well presented
Another great tutorial. Really enjoy your airbrush work. Thanks for doing these tut's,
great tips. Thanks again .
Came to learn something. Ignored everything you said and did as I got caught in a stormy gale of nostalgia with those tracks.
Explosions in the Sky. Remember those guys? Simpler times.
a brilliant model with a brilliant paint job thanks for the tutorial
A jaw dropping model made even better by an awesome paint job!! Funny comments make it more interesting as well
Thanks, mportillo! I remasked later when I did the rocks on the arms. I probably could have done all of them in ones step, but I broke it up because it was easier to mask that way. For the mouth, I worked inside out. I started with the inside of the mouth, then the tongue, then finally the teeth. That's the best way to avoid slopping paint where it doesn't belong, I think. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the kind words! I use a Harder&Steenbeck Infinity with a TC-20T compressor. I love both of those products!
I don’t even know anything about warhammer. I just love painting and sculpting. Your channel came up randomly. As a lover of YUGIOH I almost want to see what this is all about. Combining painting and my love for complex strategy games might be really fun
Thanks for responding and the lovely tutorial! I have bought a lot of oil stuff but have been weary of using my series 7 and my Rapheal's because I didn't know how harsh the White Spirits were.
BAD ASS dude. I can see why you wanted to do commission. Glad you are still into the hobby and still taping sessions. I know I am thankful for it! Paint on.
I hope you pick up making videos again. Watching this inspires me to put time into my painting to become as good as you are. Thank you so much for these!
what a super paint job. Really good done.
Fantastic job...glad to hear you are going to be able to enjoy the hobby as wa relaxing activity again...Jim
Awesome video man. Crazy variety of mediums and techniques.
Mate this tutorial has made up my mine on which army to start with, thanks for the vid, you are an amazing painter, cheers
Amazing. I thought I'd play this while painting, but had to stop to give this video 100% of my attention. The only criticism I could give about this tutorial over others is that it lacked the seriously bad jokes that made me laugh. Look forward to the next video.
Gotta love the Explosions in the Sky track during the base coating.
This is awesome! This video has inspired me to get back to my trollbloods army. Great painting mate!
Pastels will work in basically the same way as the weathering pigments. Pastels and weathering powders are basically the same stuff, but pastels have extra binders and fillers to help keep them in a pastel shape. But they work essentially the same.
Hi. I have just found your channel. You do great work. I just wanted to say that you are entirely correct about commissions. I went from being a medal winning painter to hating the hobby in a little over 8 months. And now i have not painted in nearly 20 years. I want to try again but i no longer have the eyesight i had. Lol. All the best.
RHINO 54 hi! Thanks for the comment. I hear you - between making videos and doing commissions, I got burned out pretty bad. I used to paint for probably 25+ hours/week, and now I probably haven’t painted 25 hours total in the last 2 years. I have started up again though recently, so it’s never too late to get back into the hobby! I know you said your eyesight isn’t what it used to be, but have you looked into maybe painting bigger models that don’t have so many tiny pieces? Maybe even something like scale model tanks or trains? Hope you’re staying safe and healthy! Take care!
Most definitely! I've only been using an airbrush for about a year, and I feel like I'm learning new stuff all the time.
really love it, your video makes me grab my airbrush and paint with new enthusiasm
I can't believe this. I've watched a lot of painters do tutorials and my gosh dude yours is just insane. The highlights, ink washing, the layers and layers of paint and detail that go into your models are just outstanding. You have inspired me to start painting again once this semester is over :D
this is legendary, probs the best tutorial style i have seen.
I haven't noticed any drawbacks to using lots of varnishes. If I planned my painting in advance, I may be able to find a more efficient order that might cut out a varnish or two, but it's working out well so far. Also, with a huge model like this, I couldn't help but hold onto the model while painting (as opposed to a smaller model where I could just hold the base), so all the varnishes helped protect the paintjob during painting. And I did indeed hit it with DC at the end. I love that stuff!
This is one of the single most impressive things on the internet.
Thanks Eric! I really do appreciate the kind words. Hope you have a great summer of painting!
Fantastic work! Thinking of buying some Trollblood minis just for painting them, they have really great sculpts!
I have been airbrushing for a little over a year, using videos from buypainted and apj as great references. I had found your channel a month ago and found myself learning even more. I deeply appreciate the effort you put in your videos and I like to play your videos in the background when I do my own painting. I'm waiting to see your artistic take on legion of everblight and retribution of scyrah schemes. *hint* *hint*
Amazing work. I'll never be able to paint this well. I can barely force myself to paint 1-3 models a month. I'm still a video gamer at heart so when Guild Wars 2 and Bordlands 2 came out. Painting went on the backburner.
I feel overwhelmed by the amount of models I have and hardly any of them are painted. I am the pewter king!
F*cking awesome! You're not just a minis painter, you're a minis artist!
Glad to see you're back on the channel. Been itching for your brand of how to's. I really enjoy your process, I've begun applying a good portion of it to my larger more eye catching units. Still waiting to see some sweet crons come out of your youtube. =) Welcome back.
Awesome work! I am looking at getting an airbrush and those little tips you gave during the video will definitely help. Looking forward to your next video.
That's terrible news. I have a dark red mountain troll highlighted with some great pink and purple shades from the pastels. Thanks for the advice and keep up the great work. After watching this vid I got myself a grex airbrush and started getting some practice in. Thanks for getting back to me, btw.
Very honest and concise video. I leaned a lot. Thanks!
Your Mountain King is one of my favorite models you have painted and your videos have helped me out alot keep up the good work!
Amazing work! Thank you for the inspiration. Your use of various techniques and colors really get my own creativity going. Your tutorials are my favorites by far.
cheers :) my armor base color is VGC goblin green, so I might mess around with spraying on some thrakka green on some spare plasticard to see what happens. love the idea on the metallics. so many uses for an airbrush!
Thanks for the kind words! And good luck with your teacher aspirations -- it's a really rewarding career!
Amazing tutorials.. Looking forward to trying out pigments and more washes.
I had a similar problem with my H&S Evolution too in the past. There are two ways to fix it
1. clean the both the trigger and the valve rod, could be simply some deposit on those parts, increasesing the time until the valve and the trigger move back into their original position
2. if the problem doesn't go away, tighten the valve closing screw, and thus increase the tension on the valve spring.
You just got yourself a new subscriber. Man that is a beautiful paintjob!
thanks! Yeah, I usually thin the GW washes about 4:1 with water. I'm just using them for tinting (like they're inks), and not for shading the recesses. I could have also used a really thinned down purple paint in place of Leviathan Purple, for example. But some of the washes -- like Gryphonne Sepia -- are really unique so I still like to use those for tinting.
Thanks, nebulus! How's it going with the airbrush? Making progress? It's a fun tool, for sure! Hordes is definitely still my #1 system and probably always will be -- love that game! Thanks for watching!
Thanks! It goes on dry. If it goes on wet, it will flow around (almost like a wash) so it will be hard to control. you can seal it in place with any varnish or a misting of isopropyl alcohol. Good luck!
The Liquitex bottle specifically says not to water it down, so I follow those instructions. I clean it out as quickly as possible with isopropyl alcohol. Since it takes a bit for the varnishes to dry, I'll usually break down the airbrush and do a quick cleaning during that time. It's important to clean it fast, because it's a massive pain to clean it out once it dries!
Amazing paint job! Congrats!
Duuude, looks really nice! Will definitely consult this when I get a mountain king, and your music choice is superb :)
Mi miniatura favorita. Te ha quedado genial. Me encanta♥️
Muchas gracias!
Good question! I tend to use the GW washes more like I would use inks -- just to tint or shift the colors a little bit. I don't typically use them too often for the usual wash routine (shading the recesses). Instead. I'll use the oil washes for that. I find it's so much easier to clean up the oil washes and it gives a much better result than the GW washes. But I still love those GW washes -- really cool, unique color choices!
i've used washes through the airbrush on armor before, and it usually works out well. It actually gives a really cool effect if you lightly airbrush it on over metallics. Especially Leviathan Purple gives a really cool shade to golds, and Asurman Blue and Thraka Green give really interesting effects over silver. And my mistake, I was unclear in the last post. I thin them with 4 drops of water to 1 part of wash.
I do use the Vallejo primer. I've never had a problem with it not bonding well. I might suggest scrubbing the mini with warm soap and water prior to putting on any primer. This will clean off any mold release agent that could keep the paint from bonding. Perhaps you could put down a layer of matte varnish before applying tape or blu tac? That might help protect the underlying layers. hope this helps!
That guy is stunning (if a bit cheeky, well very cheeky) The pigment/pastel work really added depth to the colours. I have got oils in the house, so I need to give them a try on a mini, that could be interesting. Nice one. Hope you are feeling better about things. We all get burned out at times, I think I had a 3 month break at one point. Sometimes you need to step away to get the want back.
Hi Devin! Thanks for the kind words. I was REALLY intimidated by painting tiny models when I first started, but it just takes practice and patience. But the good thing is that it's a FUN hobby, so it's relaxing. I'd suggest starting with larger models (your friend can suggest bigger models for the army you like best). That will be the least frustrating way to ease into painting minis, I think. And as for cost estimate ... ! It can add up quickly. This hobby becomes an addiction -- fast!
your amazing! just brought an airbrush and recently started hordes so ill be on your channel non stop
Awesome dude
This was very cool. Never even thought about using pastels for minis like this.
thhanks so much... also this is definetly the best painted mini ive ever seen
Nice to have you back, I know what you mean with hobby burnout having experienced it myself
That's awesome! Thank you so much for the heads up -- I will check it out as soon a I get home! I'm picturing it in my head and I'm 99% sure it's black. Very cool! Thanks again!!
I think of all your videos, this is my favorite. Amazing work.
Masterpiece, im blown away
Thanks, Zee Breeze! This is probably my favorite model ever. I just love the sculpt!
but in theory what scale would they be? anyway congratulations .....
Wow, love the colour transitions and variations in the flesh tones. great work. thanks for taking the time to make this tut.
Recently found this channel. I have to say I enjoy watching the tutorials and the commentary with the smattering of tips. Helps that you are a fan of Andrew over at VCP too :P Keep up the good work man, earned a sub from me fo sho!
Just apply it dry with a brush! If it's wet, it will work, too, but it will flow where you don't want it to flow. After applying it dry, you can seal it in place with an varnish (or a misting of rubbing alcohol) Good luck!
nice work, definitely gonna pick up some pastels and put them to use on some of the models from the dark vengeance set, when i get a chance to be home for more that 4 days. i would love to be home to sit down and do some more of the hobby. definitely nice to see you putting out some more vids. I can't wait. at least PP only sculpted his bumb and not his nads.
Really effective, cheers for the quick and insightful response!
awesome painting..the miniature is fantastic..!
It's Ianassa with an i, but no problem! :) I've looked at your other videos too and I must say you have made me want to get an airbrush myself!
Wow, this is really amazing, I myself do not play Warmachine but this is some amazing work! I love it :]
Hey Schnauzer, I've been on the phone with the guys from Harder & Steenbeck today. The continued airflow thing is a known issue. They've upgraded the way they design their air valve seals. If you disassemble your brush and the seal is black, you have an old one which is prone to this kind of thing. The newer seals are white. You can phone them and they will send you an upgraded seal free of cost, if you still have an old one.
Cheers!
I use the Vallejo thinner sometimes, but my preferred thinner is a custom mix of 50% distilled water, 40% drying retarder, and 10% liquitex flow aid. It flows through the airbrush and off the bristle brush quite well using this thinner, i've found. I try to avoid Windex so I don't have to breathe in the atomized ammonia, which is bad news bears for your lungs.
Damn, you've got high quality efficient painting on lock down. I am seriously impressed, well done.
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words and support!
Thanks man! By the time I was doing the base, I was just so ready to get this project finished and on to the next one, so I didn't film too much of it. I was getting impatient and kinda burned out on the troll! I watched your unboxing today -- great vid, and thanks for the kind words!
I really enjoy your video's and attitude. Community is part of what makes this hobby great. So many willing to share knowledge/experience. Thank you. (p.s More jokes please. )
You make this look so easy. Nicely done.
Thanks, Jakub! Glad to hear you're going to paint Trolls. Those models are really fun!
Excellent video. Very interesting to see scale model techniques being used on a wargaming figure!
Thanks Les! It took forever, but I'm finally done. Glad to be moving on to a normal sized model next.
Great video...I am starting up a commission thing too...great tips on that as well. Good seeing bids again teach!
Thanks! When applying pastels, you'll need to apply darker pastels on top of lighter basecoats. So if you apply a white pastel on a black basecoat, most of it will fade away when varnishing. Instead, you'd need to start with a light basecoat and build up darker colors. So start with a light basecoat, then apply your brightest pastel, varnish, then apply a darker pastel, varnish, then a darker pastel, etc etc. As far as hardness goes -- all the ones I've used are very hard. Hope this helps!
Found this channel from checking cool mini or not, lovely techniques and I'm looking forward to more :)
Seriously wow, that's absolutely incredible!! thank you for sharing.
Amazing use of materials... Gotta give those pastels a try some time... looks great :)
that's some serious skill man. Great work.
Thanks for watching, sean! As far as airbrushes go, I would suggest looking for three features: internal mix, gravity feed, and double action. This will give you the greatest control over paint and air, the least amount of wasted paint, the quickest cleanup, and the finest paint spray. As for recommendations, I'd look at the Badger Renegade Krome, Iwata HP-CS, Harder & Steenbeck Silverline & Infinity, and Paasche Talon. Any of those will serve you well! Hope this helps!
Thanks, man! Glad to hear you're getting into the hobby, and it's GREAT that you've starting with Trolls! Definitely my favorite Hordes faction, and probably my favorite faction from any game I've come across so far. I'm sure you'll catch the bug right away -- you'll get addicted to this hobby immediately. With the stories, the gaming/socialization, and the hobby aspects, you're sure to find something that draws you in. Have fun!
Awesome to see that you are back! Real good tutorial: a pleasure to watch the quality of your paintings as well as the quality of the videos.
Thanks! I agree -- I chose Trolls as my faction because I love the models. Unfortunately, some of the recent stuff isn't quite up my alley (new Axer, new Impaler, Sons of Bragg), but the MK is a return to form for the Trollbloods in my opinion. Thanks for watching!
