I have a friend who was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. She cried as she told me and said, “I am so afraid to lose my hair” and worried if she was just being vain. Hair is not “JUST HAIR” and thank you for realizing that and having the respect and support for those who find their hair to be so much more.

I’m so sorry for your friend’s situation. I’m not experiencing anything as drastic. But I used to be known for my super thick curly mop. I’m 39 and my hair is already naturally thinning a little. Looking at how much my mom’s has continued to thin out, I am so nervous about damaging my hair. It’s absolutely not just hair. And eventually it’s not going to grow back for a lot of women. That’s not vanity. Definitely not in this culture where a lot of people will harshly judge both women and men for being less than some arbitrary idea of attractiveness.

@@Willowy13 My partner has cancer right now and has lost her hair. I'm shocked she is able to watch these people drag a brush through their hair like they just don't care, or do something with bleach and a developer that ends in noodle hair. She had no choice to lose her hair, but man, these people do. This channel taught me to never, ever bleach my hair outside of a salon. Luckily, I only dye my hair red (it's naturally brown) and have it done in a salon, or in between visits, a box. But I've never been compelled to bleach at home and now I know NEVER to do this. My own hair is in pretty crappy shape--have needed a haircut & have an inch of dead ends at least--but my partner has cancer and we're busy with a lot of doc appointments. She will be fine, and was watching this channel long before she got the diagnosis. When her hair fell out, she handled it so stoically...in a way, I think hair Buddha helped. But the big thing about losing your hair with cancer is that when it starts to fall out, all the little pieces are so itchy that you desperately want the hair off of your clothes, neck and body...she just hacked it off, long beautiful hair...and I did the rest. She feels much better now and there are some amazing wigs out there. I've thought about wearing one myself, since the damage is so bad and weirdly, that's not from coloring. I used to have short hair and let it grow during the pandemic and continued to let it grow and now it's my natural color and looks like total crap. I offered to shave my head in solidarity with my partner but she thinks that kind of thing is stupid. I wear a beanie or hat most of the time, but I will say a mistake I made--with short hair, you don't have to brush it that much, just a comb and styling product. Thinking that way, I didnt brush my hair that often and when I did, I think that damaged a lot of it. Also, my diet and anemia impact the quality of my hair and I lose a lot, it easily breaks. Etc. B vitamins and especially Biotin, a multi, collagen supplements, fish oil...all will improve the quality of hair and improve its strength and thickness. (I forget to take these, but my partner did not and her hair was thick, shiny, gorgeous and will be again) BTW, these are oral supplements and obviously I have to say this because of how many times on this channel we've seen people apply vitamin c tablets directly on their hair with baking soda, dawn dish detergent, coconut oil, T-18, purple shampoo, head and shoulders mixed with developer. Me saying this could result in a video of someone dumping biotin tablets and collagen and liquid fish oil and a multi etc directly on their hair and I don't want to be responsible for that shit show! No, those are oral supplements that help but are not miracle workers because nothing is. Supplements and magic can't grow Hair Buddha a big mop of hair on his scalp nor can they undo chemotherapy side effects. It isn't vein at all to cry because at least in the chemo world, it is more than just hair but evidence to the world that announces itself loudly 'I have cancer!' and you lose eyebrow hair, eyelashes, body hair...these kids that ruin their hair have the luxury of hair to ruin. That is all.

When she was saying about all the hair coming out, I find, as someone with curly hair, the hairs don't fall out on a daily basis the same way straight hair does, in straight hair the usual hairs you lose daily just slip out, with curly hair they get sort of locked into the curl until the next time you brush or comb, which Is usually when you wash, so the amount of hair looks like more.

As a person with curly hair that made me cringe so much. The amount of hair that came off in the shower would be a moderate amount for me. I shed a lot (but then my hair is longer and tighter curls - I'm a 3b/3c mix (more of a 3c when I put more effort in or it's shorter!) so less chance of hair getting out between washes) and no matter how much hair I try and get I have to use plug hole unblocking stuff a lot.
There's no way at all I'd ever be that aggressive with a brush! I only use my fingers most of the time - or a denman brush to help me style if I have the energy/a special occasion where I want my curls to look more defined.
I have to admit, I've not had my hair professionally cut in over 10 years. So few hairdressers know how to cut curly hair properly and don't understand how much it bounces up. I go from just above my butt when wet to just below my shoulders when dry. I'd always come out a frizzy mess with a pyramid style that looked dreadful and with the final result 3-6" shorter than I requested. I've heard stories of a local-ish hairdresser who's good with curls and I need to go get an appointment there to try. In the meantime, I've just been trimming my own hair which I always do when it's dry and cutting partway through curls. If I were to cut it wet, I know every curl bounces up differently when dry so it would require more touching up to get things even.

As someone who has medium density curly hair that was waist length through highschool, I understand the feeling of your hair being difficult/time consuming to manage. I did a big chop and had an qasymmetrical curly pixie for a few years and it was such a relief! I actually enjoyed taking care of my hair for once! But I went to my stylist to have it cut. I could never imagine trying to cut my curly hair by myself.

The hairdressers cut it shorter than it was, lenght but to shoulder. And I went for a blow out !! They (2 ladies) showed me the split ends. I agree to it.

I have curly hair and cut my own hair for over 10 years now, since a hair stylist, that was used to do only straight hair, made a big booboo on my hair. I had to use a ponytail and tons of hairspray for months to keep the small piece of hair she left on the front right side of my hair, I think she was trying to make layers I don't really know. I often cut the length of my hair after washing, let it dry and wait a couple of days to see how it "behaves" and make adjustments from there.

That look of instant regret is so telling. As someone who spent most of my life with VERY short hair (sometimes as short as a buzzcut) and recently grew it out I can understand feeling like short hair is easier to manage. But in all honestly I could never go back to my short hair and I have a feeling she will miss her long hair. I hope hers grows faster than mine does. This was really painful to watch tho, her hair is so beautiful. That's the kind of hair I've wanted my entire life and to see her just hack at it like that was genuinely upsetting. I'm all for do what makes you happy, and if shorter hair makes her happy than great, but I also believe in being kind to yourself and that includes not hacking away at your hair like it's a patch of unruly weeds in your garden. Treat yourself, and by extension, your hair gently y'all.

As soon as I shaved it, I felt a huge wave of relief, and so beautiful. I know it may seem bad to those watching, but there is something immensely healing cutting your own hair- even doing a bad job. It was devastating holding it in my hands and clumps in the shower and then I lost my dad a year later, it's been a shite couple of years. The hair loss had slowed down and I managed to get a fringe back but it is so fragile and I need to be very careful with it so trying to also embrace the grey.
