Gosh. This channel is so refreshing. I've tried watching multiple reviews, tests etc of this camera and the guys whose videos come up first..I just can't sit through the whole video. You're so calming to listen to and make me feel like I can actually use this camera and get results! Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind comment, it is very much appreciated. I've taught Photography for many years and have found that by keeping things simple and easy to understand people understand it more easily.
Thank you Charles for this video, i just ordered the lens. Going to use it with the D500. Have a nice easter.
You're going to have a great time
Hello Charles...I really enjoyed your take on this combo! I used my D750 with the 200-500 with great results however I added the D7500 as a retirement gift to myself. My 200-500 is welded to the D7500 so my my D750 handles everything else. I carry both with me all the time. While birding/wildlife my D750 is setup for landscapes. Budget was not a factor in deciding between the D7500 and D500. For my needs the D7500 is just dandy! As a photographer for over forty years I know the D7500 is a winner! Cheers!
Thank you for your reply, yes the D7500 is a great camera and very much under-rated my many people. I only upgraded to the D500 as I was offered a good prce on my D7500 and got the D500 on special.
what it's like to shoot birds in flight, video🤔
thank you very much. I still bought these "perfect mach" last week. It's perfect.
Great to hear!
I have the same set up. Got the kit and lens in the early 2023 from the used market. Saved myself a huge amount. 7500 is a forgotten camera only because of its single card slot. But the quality of images combined with fast shutter speed, have to say, for wildlife this is the best set up in budget. Thanks for the video. It helped me a lot in choosing the kit.
Totally agree, I really liked the D7500, only sold it for the D500 because I wanted a faster frame rate and better auto focus
Very well explained. I have my D-7500 and now after watching your present video, now i have decided to go for Nikkor 200-500 mm. Many people have said that this set up is an excellent combination. Its true i never heard any complain from anyone those who bought and are using Nikor 200-500 mm, Thanks a lot for the detailed tutorial.
Glad I could help! and thanks for your feedback 🙏
Charles many thanks for taking the time to go through your thoughts on your setup, and the tips in the body, it's put my mind at ease, as I have a D7200 and was going for a none Nikon lens as you mentioned, but the 200 to 500mm on a cropped scensor makes it 300 mm to 750 approx, and the quality will be so much better, you and so many others love this lens, so thank you again
You're welcome Robert and thank you for letting me know that you appreciate my videos. I've been a photographer for a long time and now share the knowledge that I have to others to help them in their photography walk.
nicely explained with useful tips. thank you.
Glad it was helpful! and thanks for letting me know
Good review Charles, you presented nicely too. I love the Torresian Crow gargling in the background form a bout 2/3 way through. I totall agree with the 200-500/5.6, awesome lens. I had the Tamron 150-600 G1 prior to the Nikon, it was well known for becoming soft after 500mm so no real loss with the Nikon being limited to 500mm.
Thank you Mick or your feedback, very much appreciated.
My D7500 has now gone past 280,000 activations, it has never missed a beat. I use a friends 200-500 on my D7500 when photographing local club cricket. A brilliant combination.
That's great that your D7500 has lasted this long, as they say that it's good for around 120,000. You must be looking after your gear very well.
@@CharlesNPhotography It gets used every weekend, and being retired, a lot during the week as well. I am just a amateur photographer.
This is an amazing video. I already own this Nikon 200 500mm from 1 year paired with D5300 but I have also ordered D7500. Images from this lens are super sharp. It's just amazing.
is this good enough for d5600 ... i m planning to buy this for my d5600
I made the switch from d5300 to d7500 mainly because of the higher buffer and and shooting speed to 8 fps and the same sensor and CPU as the d500. Paired with the 200-500mm f5.6, the combo has provided me an affordable intro to bird photography.
@@yewsungtan8926 The D7500 is a great camera
@@dabanggyadav5496 The Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 will work well with your D5600
Yes, the Nikon 200-500mm is a fantastic lens
Nice revue Charles. Most of the bloggers hate the D 7500. I have the 7500 and the Nikon 80-400 lens. I am leaning towards the nikon 200-500. I look forward to more from you.
Thank you so much Don. Many people are against it has it only has 1 SD card slot and no option for a battery grip. But in reality how often are those needed. I really like using my D7500
Awesome video and commentary 👌
Glad you enjoyed!, and thank you for letting me know
I’ve made the same setup and am totally impressed with the image quality created using this combo. Also the flexibility of the zoom, I think, gives a better opportunity for composition than say the PF300 with of course far more “reach”. Cheers.
Yes the D7500 and 200-500mm f5.6 lens is a great setup
Great video. Thanks.
Thank you so much for your comment
I have the same setup and love it
Thank you so much, it's a great setup and that's why I wanted to show people how good it is.
I just picked up both. ;) Thanks.
Good choice! and hope you enjoy using both of them 😉
I bought the D7500 just now. Very excited to get started taking pictures of wildlife and airports. I have a Nikon 70-300 but eventually I’d like a 400 or 500mm lens. I actually had a D3300 but sold it. That was years ago. Now, phones take excellent pictures but don’t compare to a DSLR with a nice tele lens.
Good choice!
I have the D7200 and love it but am maxed with my old 80-200 push/pull which is great - but not quite good enough for wildlife. I'm now saving my pennies for the 200-500 and your review helps. Your metering points are helpful as well.
Thank you so much for your comments. I try to give has much information has possible when reviewing or sharing my thoughts on camera gear.
Stay tuned has I am going to be upload much more content when I've recovered from my heart operation.
Thanks Charles , i have just purchased the lens to go on my Z6 ,will be interesting .
Hope you enjoy it!
Hi Charles, I bought the D7500 after watching your videos. I went out shooting hundreds of photos with the 18-140mm kit lens. You are right, the D7500 is good, as good as you said. the pictures are also nice and sharp, taken with the suggested aperture of between f/8 and f/11.
In certain conditions, it performed better than the D700, which I currently have. The dark shadow area shows plenty of details when recovered in post processing, which is something my full frame is not as good. I am really surprised. And the overall picture quality is very impressive. I am sure it will be better when taken with prime lenses.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much for letting me know that my videos and advice have helped you. The D700 was a great camera in its day (2008>2012) But the more modern D7500 even though it's a crop-sensor camera has a much newer processor and has the same processor has the D500 allows you to shoot at much higher ISO and its dynamic range is also much better.
Thanks for the great video, Charles. Have you ever tried using a 1.4x tele-converter with your set up? If so, how do you like the tele-converter, which brand and how well does it perform? Thanks.
No! I never did try it with the D7500, but a friend of mine did and found the auto-focus speed did reduce considerably. Nikon don't recommend using a tele-converter with this lens for wildlife photography where the subject moves quickly.
Good review. I love the D7500. Lens wise, have been eyeing the 200-500, or alternately the 500 PF or 300 PF with TC 1.4 - decision between weight, size, and flexibility. My hand holding technique is also problematic, so the smaller and lighter PF lenses are attractive (also for travel by airline) but lose that zoom flexibility and versatility of the 200-500. Currently have the 70-300AP, whilst good, not enough reach for wildlife, sport or air shows.
Thank you very much for your comment, much appreciated
I’ve been using my 200-500 for aviation photography for around 4 yrs and it’s an awesome lense. I wouldn’t mind the 600 or 800 reach, but free wielding weight becomes an issue. Had used a D7200 with it previously and the set up was heavy ( I don’t use a tripod). The D7200 is a solid shooter, but I was a noob using it. Traded it in for a D5500 and I love the touchscreen manipulation. Looking at the D7500
I had used my D7500 for nearly a year for wildlife photography with the Nikon 200-500mm and it was very good. The only reason I sold it and bought the Nikon D500 was that I wanted better/quicker auto-focus of birds in flight.
Well Described..
Thank you very much
Many thanks for the video! Where did you buy the lens cover?
I bought it on eBay from a eBay shop in England
Hi Charles, awesome video just what I needed to make my mind up about the 200-500mm lens! Just one question, what lens cover is that? i’ll need one when I buy the lens!
Thank you very much for your feedback. I bought the lens cover on eBay from a supplier in England. This is what you want to type into eBay (Camouflage Lens Cover for Nikon 200-500mm f5.6)
My gizmo said 95mm for the nikon 200-500 lens cover..I hope thats right because the lens is going to take a few weeks to get here! I got the d7500 and its kit lenses to take pictures when traveling but to also for birds...just need a little bit more than 300mm now..
I have a d7200 body and I am planning to buy an Nikkor f5.6 200-500mm..ur review is wonderful
The Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 will work very nicely with the D7200
@@CharlesNPhotography thank u charles
Hey mate great video, would you recommend this camera for a beginner who likes to shoot wildlife and car 4x4 action shots ?
Thanks mate
Definitively, it's a great camera and you'll grow into it and find that if offers great dollar value.
I restarted doing recreational photography with the d7500 and the two kit lens offered with it. I was able to visit a large retail store that had rows of different camera brands and models on display to see how the ones that I'd only read about, how they actually felt in my tiny hands..the d7500 was great. Ergonomically the Nikons do seem better than alot of other cameras, and it wasn't too hard on my pocket book. 2 1/2 years later I need to up my lens kit rather that up my mega pixels so I'm thinking nikon f mounts, if I ever get a Z mount, they have an adapter for that, so that's it, that's the ticket, the 200-500mm f5.6.
Nice review thanks. Could you explain the difference between continueous focus and 3d tracking?
I got the D7500 a few months back, I'm a novice so it's a great entry level camera for me and my budget. A lot of people knock it for only having one card slot but that's a non issue for me with cards being so reliable these days, as you also say.
Also, it may only be 21 MP but it's the same sensor as it's bigger brother the D500 which is superb, and produces great results.
Hi Andy, Continuous focus and 3D tracking are 2 separate settings. To select AF-C (Auto-focus Continuous) you need to press the center of the button that controls the AF/M switch on the bottom left of the camera. Then using the rear dial you can select AF-5, AF-C AND AF-A). Then using the front dial you choose how many focus points you want the camera to use (5, d9, d21, d51, 3d, Grp, Auto). I use d9 for most of my wildlife photography and only use Grp (Group) if it's a bird in flight and they are close to me.
@@CharlesNPhotography thanks.
Where Did you get you camouflage skin for the 200-500 lens Charles
I bought it from a UK supplier on eBay
I must agree that Nikon D7500 is very good. I just bought SIgma 100-400 f/5-6.3. Nikon was too expensive for me. The DOF preview can be realized by camera software, so I do not know why Nikon decided to remove this option.
Yes, many people also cannot understand the logic of Nikon removing this feature on the D7500
Great video!
How well it could be the focus speed with a sigma lens?, maybe sigma 150-600mm
I did have a play with the Sigma 150-600mm and the focus speed was about the same.
thanks a lot @Charles N Photography
A secondhand sigma 150-600 sports lens was what I was considering, but then I opted for the Nikon 200-500. I like the idea of the f5.6 and it is slightly lighter than the Sigma (though still heavy). Then I stumbled on Charle's article d7500-match to nikon 200-500.
It's a great camera, I am considering to get one used only for wildlife to get more reach. Currently shooting with the D810.
Btw, your video cuts are a bit distracting.
The Nikon D7500 is a great camera for wildlife photography at a reasonable price. That's also for the honest feedback about the video, I am getting better so has I do more videos the cuts should be less evident.
Great video! I have the Nikon D7500 body and I am looking into getting this lens. I am more of a "picture taker" not really a professional photographer. I love going out on wildlife walks and taking photos but I cannot get close enough to the wildlife without disturbing them. I have a lens that the camera body came with. The range on that one is only up to 140 mm. I am so torn between getting this or not not because of the price and because I am not a professional. Any advice? Thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!, This lens isn't just for Pro's. Many photographers who just like photographing wildlife buy it as it's so sharp at 500mm. So buy it and you'll never regret it, I can assure you of that.
@@CharlesNPhotography thanks so much for the advice! 😁
Dear Sir, How is the DSLR attached to Tripod ? From the video it looks like camera base is not attached to Tripod but the lens. I am confused. It does not look like L bracket or Z bracket. Thank you
Yes, correct! when you use a long lens like the Nikon 200-500mm you attach the lens to the tripod, not the camera. You can break the lens mount on either the lens or your camera if you attach the camera to the tripod when you use a long lens.
Hey Charles, watching in 2023 (almost 2024)! I have a D7200 and love it, but am looking into a telephoto. Do you still have the 200-500? What's your opinion of it in 2023? Thanks!
Yes I do! and it's still a great lens to have in 2024.
@@CharlesNPhotography Good to hear! What's your go to tripod? i'm also looking into one of those. Have a Happy new years!
Sir! What kind of lens cover do you use? Is it Lenscoat or an other one? And does it stay on good?
I bought it of Ebay 18 months ago and it came from England. The lens cover is a firm fit. Here is the link to their eBay www.ebay.com.au/itm/114801334956
@@CharlesNPhotography Thanks for the help.
sir is this best for my d5600 ... i like bird photography
This lens would work very well with your Nikon D5600
Weight was the deciding factor for me. I tried a D500 but ended up buying the D7500 because, with a long telephoto lens attached, the weight of the D500 was too much to handle comfortably. The lighter D7500 was perfect, however, and I saw no difference in the photo quality. That should not be surprising because the cameras share the same optics. It's the extras that differ, like extra card slot, which I haven't missed.
Yes, I found that the D7500 was a great camera and only sold it to buy the D500 because I wanted better/faster auto-focus and faster frame rate. But in hind sight, I should have stayed with the D7500 and waited a year and bought the Z6II. I would have saved quite a bit of money.
@@CharlesNPhotography The D500's snappier auto-focus is what I missed most; also the extra focus points. Had it not been so heavy, I probably would have bought it.
I notice you are not using a gimbal head in this video. Do you feel comfortable shooting 200-500 without it on a tripod?
Yes, I do you a gimbal sometimes though
I wonder where can I buy such lens cover for the price you've mentioned
I bought mine on eBay from a UK supplier. You can get cheaper ones from China, but they're not as good.
How does it hold up with the af-s 80-400 f4.5-5.6?
In my opinion, the D7500 would do quite well
I hate to bust your bubble, but I know someone who accidentally re-formatted his SD card. He was able to find some software that got his pictures back off the card. I wouldn't of thought it was possible, but it is.
I know there is software available to get images back of a SD card, but it's no always going to work. It depends if you've formatted the card and also taken more photos
I have this combo. It’s a bit 1 star 5 star, with the lens as the 1 star. It’s ok with a static subjects but movement completely throws it. It can’t cope with a gliding kite or even a swimming duck. My old 300/f4D is much better.
I’m underwhelmed by Nikon atm. 4 years ago the D7500 I bought had to be replaced as the af was completely awry. I bought a Z5 earlier this year and, even after going back to Nikon, it still randomly overexposes and the animal eye af is unimpressive - it prefers to focus on a kestrel’s feathers than its eye. And now this lens.
If it wasn’t for Thom Hogan’s advice not to switch, I’d be eyeing up a Fuji or Sony.
Sorry to hear that you've had problems with your Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens, but even when I had the Nikon D7500 I had no issues taking photos with the 200-500mm of fast moving birds, I was just limited to the slower AF speed compared to the D500 which is why I sold the D7500 and bought the D500. I haven't used the Z5 so can't comments on the accuracy of Animal eye AF, but I do know that apart from the Z9 all other Nikon Z cameras don't have bird eye AF.
Hi Sir ,
Which monopod you are using ??
It's just a generic monopod
