- Describing Bruce Springsteen as a great American singer/songwriter is a massive understatement. He is The Boss, and at this point, five decades into his remarkable career, Bruce Springsteen is a national treasure.
His voice is unmistakable. Classic anthems like, “Born to Run,” “Hungry Heart,” and “Jungleland,” defined the American working-class psyche in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
Today, Bruce has reached rarefied air. He’s sold more than 150 million albums worldwide and he’s won 20 Grammys. And at 71 years-old, there’s still no stopping him.
He recorded his latest album, “Letter To You,” with the E Street Band in just five days. The album dives deep into the theme of loss, and also includes three songs that Bruce wrote 50 years ago.
In this interview with Malcolm Gladwell and Rick Rubin, Bruce Springsteen talks about how his Irish and Italian sides have physically manifested into songs over the years. He also describes the moment when Barack Obama gave him the idea for his intimate Broadway show. And how listening to Born To Run 45 years after it was released made Bruce realize just how good he really is.

i burned my old vinyl copy of the Born To Run album to an i-pod the other night and walked around my hometown at night listening for the first time in many years. it has to be the most romantically furious music i have ever heard. What fury and passion on that record. It gave me chills.
Rick Rubin (legend himself) has a very respectful and intelligent way to conduct this great interview.
Springsteen answers in an honest and very personable manner.

I have always had such a tremendous respect for Bruce. I can’t say I was always a fan of all his music. But I will say this. He is an incredible human being and talk about intelligent. Bruce is so incredibly intelligent. Think about what he has done. When he started doing it and the fact that he is so kind and respectful to everyone he speaks to. God Bless Bruce and what he has given to this world. You don’t find musicians like Bruce on America gots talent. Think about that all you young musicians.
There simply is no one better: articulate, authentic, and so very open. Perfection.

He reminds me of a 10th grader in debate class. Self-important yes but as a youth he has a right to be and will grow out of it.
This is one of the absolute best Bruce interviews I've heard in a very long time.
Every time I learn something new from Bruce Springsteen I come out the other side with an even deeper respect for Springsteen the human being.

Overrated interviewing overrated.
I do wish I could have heard his voice more during these years. It could be that the overall culture volume is so loud these days. We are angry but angry about the wrong things and angry at the wrong people. He is one of those artist that wakes up his fans to empathy. Empathy seems like a bygone emotion. He’s a compass in the fog. He’s been there the whole time and I missed him.
Empathy is the word I use most in connection with Bruce. The ability to understand there are more perspectives than our own is so critical to spiritual growth. It is, I suppose, grace. Bruce has it in spades, and how grateful I am that he so generously shares it with the world.
I don't know why I'm surprised at how flowingly articulate Bruce Springsteen is. He answers questions succinctly, without hesitation, and with almost no trip ups. Amazing.

Bruce is an amazing songwriter and a very lucky man I do think He worked hard for what he has achieved .Still I only own one of his records.I should do so Bruce research.

A Bruce fan story from a million miles away in Australia. I was aware of the 'Born in the USA' album but only really became a bit of a fan after randomly buying 'Tunnel of Love' and really enjoying the lyrics on that album. Another random buy was the 'Nebraska' album from the bargain bin at the music store in town. I clearly remember sitting in my bedroom and putting that album on for the first time and hearing that lonesome harmonica start a tale of a messed up guy and his girl going to bad,bad places. I'd been lucky to have been brought up in a house with lots of music but I had never heard music like this. The best songwriter music is when you feel the writer has let their guard down and let you inside, 'Nebraska' is that ultimate album,because letting the guard down wasn't intentional. As I said,bought the album from the bargain bin for $8 when CDs were selling for $25,and if I ever run into Bruce I'll gladly cough up the extra $17. Least I could do.

Great interview. However I'd like to hear a bit about the spoken word at the live shows. My first show was at age 21, River tour, summer July 1981, NJ. Bruce spoke of having been in Europe and "if you have a chance you got to go. It isn't what you read in the papers or see on TV." Having been in England, Wales, Germany and Austria five years earlier, in full teenage angst... powerful. Rummaging through thousands of albums at a London outdoor market... havingba hippie chick pin a flower on me in Piccadilly... Brice words... so powerful. Also, same show, a firecracker explodes and Bruce addresses the culprit in a real definitive way. The songs, framed be Bruce's passionate spoken word... that's a huge part of the gift of his heart. These words, like in this interview, give insight to the man behind the curtain. Thank you.

Tracks 1 1998 Disc 2 River outtakes 7-10 classics unbelievable power pop gems. Tracks 2 is due next but don't know how much trilogy material will be on there meaning BtR/Darkness/River material
River was a masterpiece this is closest album of new material, a cousin to that classic!!
This guy has a big heart, I like him. But if you want a laugh, there’s an old Opie and Anthony clip of them taring into Bruce Springsteen, wah wah wah!, down at the turnpike, in Jersey!, me and Mary down at the rock, in Jersey!, I built my own car, in Jersey! Haha, so funny.
Nebraska is a very depressing album I’m not surprised to hear that he was depressed
40 plus yrs ESB n Springsteen hardcore fan but THANK God he let go of that pre Born To Run style of writing songs ala Dylanesque. If not for the amazing trilogy of BtR/ Darkness/The River album masterpiece I would n could not have fallen for him n the band. The River is wat solidified my fanhood to him. His Pop / Power Pop 3-4 minute uptempo upbeat all hook short verse gems n his Rock n Soul style made me a die-hard not the Dylan style words imagery. His coolest period n most prolific writing period was that 80 album bc USA was horrible dated 80'd cheesy pop for the fair weather fans. The River album n era was him n the boys at their peak! Thank God my 50 yrs on Earth was during his, so far, 71 yes on Earth. I was 9 wen he was 30/31 n The River album and era stole my heart away. Legend!

Bruce Springsteen got lyrics from me when I was 15 and 16 years old. Again when I was 23 through Steven Van Zandt. They both promised to pay and they never paid a red cent. They are what is known in the industry as "song sharks." Bruce welched on his agreement, so did Steven.

The band is really the trilogy superstars. BtR/Darkness/River.... ANYTHING before or after that is the E Street Band Family..Nils, Patty etc...by the end of the River masterpiece the ESB was already HoF solidified USA was for the fair weather fans n any members after that r family but not part of the Crew/Band of Brothers. Just Saying from a 40 yr hardcore Tramp.
