The significance of Julie Newmar is that she's one of those early Hollywood gay icons, like Judy Garland and Greta Garbo. Newmar has a gay brother and she's been a vocal LGBTQIA rights advocate all her career

When I was 10, my parents split up because one of them decided it was finally time they embraced their true self and came out as gay. We were in a small town in the mid-90s, and nobody understood. I was confused and sad and didn't know how to still love them because all I was being told and shown was hatred. I found myself browsing in the video rental store one day and the employee there (who loosely knew me and my family and the situation) handed me this movie and said "I think you'll enjoy this." Watching this film really helped me accept that it was still ok to love my parent and gave me the courage to stand up for them. I'm still friends with that video store employee today.

@@cosesu8929 Most Drag Queens are members of the LGBTQ+ however, there are definitely straight men and straight women who can perform drag as well! Drag is basically "Gender as a performance". So even a cis woman can be a drag queen because drag is about enhancing and pushing to extremes the concept of gender :D Hopefully that helps?
(Although there are probably a large percentage of the LGBTQ+ community who would give push-back against straight cis people participating in fear of a space being overtaken. But I feel that defeats the purpose of drag which is meant to bring joy and entertainment to the community, and bring awareness to bigger issues through a lens of art and performance, rather than sadness and grief)

I loved the fact that Patrick Swayze wanted a role in this film so much that he sent in an audition tape in full drag. At the time, Swayze was always kind of portrayed as a Man's man, so it was a big deal for him to be in drag. Kind of the same with Wesley Snipes, he's been best known as an Action star (Blade, Demolition Man, and Drop Zone to name a few), so this was a far cry from his usual work. Once you see some of his action movies, you'll understand why it was a big deal for him as well. Out of the three, John Leguizamo had at least done drag before. He's primarily known for his stand-up specials where he talks about his life growing up, and he dressed in drag for a few of the "characters" he did in his stand-up shows. So glad you liked this movie, and 4 out of 5 stars is a perfectly respectable rating.

So out of the three of them Patrick had the most practice in high heels. First day of filming he comes striding confidently out of his trailer making a beeline for the soundstage. John and Wesley who had wobbled down their own trailer steps were just standing there stunned at his flawless walk. Patrick paused, turned around, and told them that he used to be a dance teacher before he was an actor, and that meant not just learning how to walk in heels, but how to dance in them too.

When this came out, I promised my three nieces I would take them to go see it. I am "The Gay Uncle". I really did not think this through until we were pulling into the theater parking lot. I went to buy the tickets and instructed the three to wait by the entrance. When the lady asks how many tickets, I said Four Adults. My three nieces were right there and corrected that to One Adult and Three Children. I started sweating bullets at this point. The entire length of time using the bathroom, getting snacks and heading towards our theater number, I was expecting a bolt of lighting to come strike me down. It felt like every eye of every one around me was watching me take children into a den of iniquity. I heaved a sigh of relief as we entered the theater. The theater had filled up. All the adults occupied the seats towards the back. Up front, consisting of several rows, young teen girls who had been brought by their parents. The air inside the theater was lively and spirited. When I asked my nieces it they wanted to go sit up front, they charged ahead and saw several girls from their school. Watching my nieces have a good time was rewarding. I sat back and relaxed and enjoyed this movie on so many levels.

Julie Newmar played Catwoman on the TV series, the role she's most remembered for as she did it so perfectly. She was replaced due to scheduling conflicts with movie roles. There are clips of her on CZcams as Catwoman, one where she's coming on to Batman & suggests they join forces...he says "What about Robin?" to which she replies she'll just have him killed. She's had a long & illustrious career...if you grew up in the 60s & 70s, you knew who she was because she was unmistakable. Mainly appeared on TV...even in an episode of Columbo in the 2nd season called "Double Shock." And she crowned Chi-Chi at the end of the movie.

Some of the members were in their 60’s and had gone through living in hiding, Stonewall, and then the AIDS crisis. People ask why PRIDE is important - well it’s because of men like them - who persevered, who survived, and who fought for the generations after them for acceptance and equality. As a member of the Knoxville Gay Mens' Chorus, now the Appalachian Equality Chorus (hate that name), it's nice to see you here. I am 56, living with undetectable HIV for over a quarter century now. An asshole who knew he had it, told me he loved me, and lied to my face about it in 1996. Meanwhile, I survived. In 1998, still with my lifeguard, working out three days a week body, I dressed in short shorts, a cut off Olympic baseball tee, and tied a half a year's worth of medicine bottles to my arms and legs, and the other half, I just drug behind me, carrying a sign that read, in BIG red letters, "AIDS IS NOT OVER." That was the Pride parade, 1998. I wish I had a picture, because that was a huge thing for me. I came out in 1984, at 16, and was bullied, mercilessly. I am 5'6", light boned. I got my rib cage kicked and broken the morning of the day where I was to perform as Emile deBeque in "South Pacific." I went on stage anyway, no pain meds. They couldn't hear me in the back rows, but I showed up. You nailed it, about Pride. Pride means, "I made it through, and I was proud to pave the way for others, later on." Nobody should have to go through all that.
If you want to see my solos with our Chorus, Spring of '18, I eulogised a friend, then sang the opening verse of "Memory," from Cats, and in Spring of '23, I did the coming our of the chorus ad-libbing at the end of "Let the Sunshine In!" I also have a couple of my home videos, #Smule app, doing karaoke on my YT, if you want to check them out. Of course, Smule is free to look at, and I have hundreds of recordings there. Pick a song, I probably sang it. Be well, fellow singer.

Jayne’s daughter is a famous actress now on the show law and order SVU her name is Mariska Hagerty and she was in the car the night her mother was killed.

I never saw the prejudice get to her, maybe because I was shielded or she didn’t want to let it get to her. I just remember someone living their true open self. More than anyone else I have ever met!
I just feel this is a great movie. It brings me nothing but joy and happiness everytime I see it! đŸŒˆđŸ©·â€ïžđŸ§ĄđŸ’›đŸ’šđŸ©”đŸ’™đŸ’œđŸ€ŽđŸ–€đŸ©¶đŸ€đŸŒˆHAPPY PRIDE MONTH ASHLEIGH AND FRIENDS!! đŸłïžâ€đŸŒˆđŸłïžâ€âš§ïž

What makes this movie great is that the leads are known for masculine roles, especially Snipes and Swayze who were better known as action stars (Snipes) and as an A-list romatnic lead (Swayze). Their performances here are a complete 180 from how we're used to seeing them and they absolutely KILL it. Swayze especially, he IS Vida. John Leguizamo is also awesome in this but he wasn't as high profile as his two co-stars. He was known more as a character actor who was brought in when a movie needed a snarky Puerto Rican dude. Leguizamo is probably my favorite actor of the three. Brother can do ANYTHING.
Hun, you're not ready for Samurai Cop and let me tell you why. It's not because it's a bad movie even though it's a terrible, badly made putrid pile of poo poo of a film, it's that you don't have the kind of appreciation for bad movies that it takes to actually have fun watching a cheesefest like this. Like with every other movie you watch you're going to take it at face value--which isn't a bad thing, but in this case it isn't going to help and I'm 99 percent positive you're going to hate it because of that.

A few actors in this that you've seen in other things. Melinda Dillon, the orange-haired Merna, was probably most famous for playing the mom whose child is abducted in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, who ends up seeing the aliens at the end alongside Richard Dreyfuss. She was also the mom in A Christmas Story. Chris Penn, who played the homophobic cop, was the best friend in Footloose that Kevin Bacon teaches to dance. The actor playing Bobby Ray is Jason London, who played one of the main characters in Dazed and Confused, and he is also the twin brother of Jeremy London, the main character from Kevin Smith's Mallrats. Last but not least, Alice Drummond, who played the elderly film fan Clara, was probably most recognizable as the librarian who gets scared in the prologue to Ghostbusters.
Robin Williams was interested in the movie, and he played a part in convincing Steven Spielberg to produce the film through Amblin Entertainment, but he thought being one of the drag queens himself would overshadow the rest of the cast, so he opted to have his uncredited cameo instead.

Miss Ashleigh, I'll be 52 years old in exactly 2 weeks. I served in the US Navy starting on February 25th, 1991 (I was 19 years old at the time). When I celebrated my 21st birthday, I had my first ever alcoholic drink BUT something else had happened while I was stationed as a journalist at what was then called Naval Submarine Base, Bangor. I had discovered that even though I had not been with anyone in a sexual manner at that point in my life, on September 30th, 1992, I wrote a letter to the editor of what was then called "The Bremerton Sun" about a recent sailor serving on one of our trident nuclear submarines who had just came out and said he was gay. At the very end of the letter I wrote, "Not only can I sympathize with BLEEP but I also can empathize with him is because I too am a gay man."
I served nearly an entire year (from September 30th, 1992 until my honorable discharge on September 15th, 1993) but since you love RuPaul, here's my personal RuPaul interaction. During that year, she was touring around the country as her first hit single, "Supermodel" was a huge club hit and one of her stops was in Seattle. A group of us young gay sailors went to see the show and afterwards, she did a little meet and greet.
Though I was a journalist on the base's newspaper (later in life I was properly diagnosed with autism), I was extremely uncomfortable "talking about myself." One of my friends grabbed and said to RuPaul ... "This is Seaman Frederick Seltzer Jr. He's only 21 years old and just a couple of months ago, he was so brave that he announced to the entire country he was gay!" I will remember her response until the day I die ...
"I am so proud of you for being that brave at such a very young age and I just wish more men and women had the courage and balls that you have!" and proceeded to hug me. Though I knew she was in drag, it was the first time in my life that an older male figure ever told me that they were proud of me.

So I didn’t like this movie at all when it came out. It took me until my 30’a before I started accepting myself and being open to learning more about the world. @@awkwardashleigh Yeah that's always the problem with comedy based on referential humor. My favorite tv show of all time is Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST 3K), which is a show where they comment on bad movies, and make fun of them. Sort of the original source for what a lot of reaction comment creators like yourself do today. We watch you watching it, and enjoy watching your reaction to it. MST 3K was the grandfather of that concept, before DVD commentaries and everything. And it was a great show, but, the problem was even as a kid, watching it in the 80s/90s, is that I was watching guys in their 30s/40s, making fun of movies from the 40s-70s, making references to people from before I was even born. So some jokes just didn't land at all. They had some much built in knowledge needed to understand the joke. It's like looking at an internet meme without having any of the context of the things being referenced as material for the joke.

This is one of those movies I repeatedly watch. I saw it the 90's for the first time as a closeted kid. For movie night my dad would let me rent it over and over. There are so many lessons here. Acceptance is the main one, but also a lesson on self worth through domestic violence. Also, just a base message of positivity through really challenging circumstances. I know now my dad knew I was gay. The fact that he knew that and understood how important this kind of representation was back then speaks volumes as to the kind of person my dad is, and how he decided to parent me and raise me. Even before I came out, I knew at least on some level I had a solid backing of love.

BTW, Julie Newmar was the 1st of 3 actresses to play Catwoman in the 1960s Batman tv series (1st two seasons)

Julie Newmar was iconic in the gay and drag communities. I think she's less well-known now by younger folks. She is pretty tall for an actress (5'11"), so her look was easier for some queens to adapt. She was in several really big movie musicals including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Lil' Abner, where she played Stupefyin' Jones. And she is stupefying. She's got a figure that refuses to quit and did quite a few pinup photos early on.
She has long been known as an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. I'm so glad you liked this one. It's such a sweet, heartwarming movie. ❀

Julie Newmar is so beautiful. If you want another musical to watch, she has a small part in Seven Bride for Seven Brothers. It's such a fun movie and the barn raising scene has the best dance sequence and one of the best fight sequences ever.

Jayne Mansfield was an actress from the 50s/60s. I would love if you reacted to one of her movies. "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" and "The Girl Can't Help It" are her more popular ones.

And famously, she died in a car crash. Hence the "not a good auto reference" line.
Also famously, her daughter is Mariska Hargitay who plays Olivia Benson in Law & Order SVU. She was in the backseat but survived largely uninjured.

Julie Newmar also plays in seven brides for seven Brothers. Another good drag queen movie is Connie and Carla but that one is mainly about sing along dinner theater unless you know of some of the songs it might not be as fun but it’s one of my favorite and a lot of drag queens in the movie use their own stuff.

As a straight male, this movie was a riot and a wake up call b to most of us, and gave us a bit in to the life of LGBT people. Specially since: since lest be honest. We all have a relative or family member that's like that but nobody talks about it. Great movie back then and now.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this film. Fantastic when the themes of a movie like this still hold up decades later - just goes to show how ahead of its time it was! While today the casting of the leads obviously wouldn’t have gone to three straight men, they did a great job - the respect and grace and seriousness with which Patrick, John, and Wesley approached these roles is truly what makes this film work as the emotional journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance that it is. They approached their roles with honesty, and that’s all I can ask for. Watch some BTS interviews from this one someday, what they have to say about the experience is really lovely.
Best line? “I’m the Latina Marilyn Monroe, I’ve got more legs than a bucket of chicken!” John absolutely DEVOURED this role. I love Chi-Chi in all her self-centered, petty impulsivity - and how she grows to learn how to consider other people and their happiness as well. 💚💚💚

The Jane Mansfield reference, Jane Mansfield was an old Hollywood actress, her career tragically ended when she was in a car accident and her head was all but severed. If memory serves correctly that is. Anyway her daughter is Mariska Hargitay, who is probably best know as detective Olivia Benson law and order SVU

Hi Ashleigh, I'd like to recommend 2 other very overlooked movies: 'In & Out' (1997), starring Kevin Kline, Tom Selleck, Debbie Reynolds, Alice Drummond, Bob Newheart, Mat Dillon and Joan Cusack's other 'best role ever', besides 'Addam's Family Values'. It's a must! And the other movie is 'Jeffrey' (1995), starring Steven Weber, Michael T. Weiss, Sir Patrick Stewart !!! and with hilarious cameo's from Sigourney Weaver, Christine Baranski, Nathan Lane, Victor Garber and the amazing Olympia Dukakis among others. I hope you will react to them sometime.
