    In this episode we carry on wiring in the Motogadget M unit. Last episode we managed to install the M button and that worked a treat! This episode is about ignition and the starter systems. Although i didn't get the result i was after, we made some good progress.

    For high vibration applications you shouldn't use solder. Use some butt connectors and shrink tube over the connection. The joint won't be brittle as a solder joint.

    Our Spring has Sprung here and yesterday, Miss Zippo and I decided to ride the day away. We started out on Onyx, my 2003 Yamaha V-Star 1100 Classic and made it an incredible 1/2 mile before the fuel pump decided to go out. ARGH! So, I managed to get the bike to start back up and used the choke to pull fuel through the dead pump to get it back home. So, new fuel pump is ordered, but Miss Zippo and I did manage to put on almost 100 miles on Pearl, the late model Honda Goldwing. Just thought I'd share my Saturday antics my Friend. I've said it many times...I'm thoroughly enjoying watching you evolve. Nothing short of brilliant! Keep up the great work! Cheers my Friend! Zip~

    Your making progress Jish. Get yourself a timing light, it will help you ensure the timing is right....I don't think that's the ideal spot for the rectifier but I think it will work there.

    good initial test. I did an XJ550 rebuild, and I took off neutral switch, and kick stand switch wiring. less gremlins as these prevent starting. do some digging around to see if they stay open, or get grounded.

    Having done a lot of work on my XJ550R, I can say, the TCI needs good voltage to fire the ignition. You really need a strong battery when you're debugging starting. If the one you have isn't reasonably new, just spring for a new one (even a cheap-ish lead acid). I ended up with a nice MotoBatt (AGM), but just need something with enough juice while you're testing and tuning everything.

    Me thinks your plug leads are mixed up. Remember, the leads don't go as you'd expect but one coil does cylinders 1&4 and 2&3

  • @ChadwickRider
    @ChadwickRider Před 4 lety

    Jish, if I had to take a guess... I'd say that you just need to adjust the timing.
    After seeing the condition of the wires running to the points and advancer system. I'd start with statically timing the points (electronic ignition if that's what you have) and see where that gets you... I'm willing to bet the bike will fire up after the timing is set. Also, see Hughie's comment in this thread regarding your plug leads.

If you're not intending to use the grad rail and the little D shaped mouldings at the front of the tank, I'd be really interested in buying them off you it'll help me out and give you some much needed funds I'm sure.

    Gutted we didn't get to hear it run this episode! That starter definitely sounds a bit weak. Get that battery juiced up and maybe look at new brushes? It should crank over with a bunch more gusto than that. Good luck!

    How did the spark timing turn out ? The little back-pop with flames flashing from the pipes is probably not the dramamatic effect you wanted, but as directors always say, drama = eyes watching (actually, I just made that up). Enjoyed this video as always. Stay well..and eventually..stay riding !

    I'm currently doing a XJ650 Maxim build with the M.Unit as well and I'm curious as to whether you needed to use a relay for the ignition system, because I think it has a CDI and needs it as per the Revival Cycles diagram for the wiring. If not, kudos. Any insight would be super helpful. Cheers!

  • @alancampbell1008
    @alancampbell1008 Před 4 lety

    HT leads mixed up from the coils I'd say. Don't see why mounting the reg/rectifier under the tank wouldn't work, at least it would have air over it when you're going along. Be better than enclosing it in the electrics tray in my opinion. I did a cut out in a tray so the heatsink was outside in the air, wasn't noticeable unless you really looked and all the wiring and body was hidden under the seat.

Ive heard it called ecu , icu, cdi, brain box, etc.But my manuel for my 2000 r6 says its a ICU so how do you hook that to the m unit if all your switchs go to that icu box ? the regulator should not be located over the engine, the heat of the engine will tend to go up and hot air will hit the regulator, even when you think there will be good flow air can be a hot air, so thats why most motorcycle brands located the regulator in front of the bike!!
