  • As a skip, it is your job to call line. That means communicating to your sweepers if the rock has to curl more or if they need to sweep and try and hold it straighter for longer. In order to call the line, you need to be able to reed the ice and anticipate the curl.

    Great vid - thank you!
Would love to see one more in depth about reading/mapping the ice and how you attack that.

I started curling for the first time this year. Somehow, I was nominated to be skip, despite everyone else having played before. I still can't figure that one out.
Anyways, Yes, I quickly discovered that line calling isn't nearly as easy as it looks like on TV. Everyone has a different delivery stile. Everyone's shots curl differently. Some are often inside the broom, some outside. We even had someone using a stick which through everything out the window. Getting the sweepers on the rock before it starts to curl is really important because once it starts its very hard to control it. A couple of tips other curlers gave me was to always hold the broom on the t-line because if you move to the top of the house it changes the line. The other thing was to stay in the house and watch the line rather than jump out to help the sweepers.

Great video Jamie! Please keep them coming. I am thrilled to see you making new videos.
I also smiled when you said to praise your sweepers. I played lead on my team for this last winter league and I praised the shooter and sweeper as often as I could.

Music is at 10 where your voice is at 6. Everybody hit the like button so she shows up more on search.

@Jamie Sinclair, perhaps you would also want to explain why/how to "slide" your body laterally across the ice as the rock is moving or post-release so that you can better visualize the stone 's path vs. desired target as it approaches the house? Just a thought/suggestion to add to this great video.

Thanks for the great videos as usual! As far as what you should put up next (text near the end of this one) I have a tough but on point suggestion for the time we're in:
What are your favorite exercises (both mental and physical) that one can do without Ice in the still (unfortunately) social distancing world?
My club didn't even put in ice this year, and I know I'm not alone. The off season is looming even for those who did curl. Would be nice to expand on our repertoire of stuff to do to help our curling game when we can't curl.
Of course over the years I've heard of i.e. "Assuming the position" (basically getting into slide pose on your floor and trying to hold it) to help with future stability, standard lunges, and "row" or bicep curl type exercises help a little with sweeping strength. I've picked up a bit of Yoga here and there that helps. Feel free to include those, but what are other things you might suggest/do?
(You don't have to answer here of course if you use the video idea :-) )

I have been playing front ends for several years and had no intention to play back end. My team lost a vice last week and my skip says I am vicing starting next week.:( This video is so helpful and will check out other clips as well. Thank you!

HOLD up... 1:12 "Breakpoint" in singular, not plural form? Mind blown..... I always just kinda assume at least 3 or 4 breakpoints, ya got the Zamboni tire track, the skate rut, and ooh! That weird spot under where the roof is dripping! All with a bit of "close eyes and pray." And the ever-popular "whoawhoaOFF! NEVER! ...ACTUALLY YES HARD!!!" #ArenaIce

@@CurlUpWithJamie You bet! Come on out to Long Island sometime. I swear our ice is actually pretty good when we run a spiel. Fewer than two breakpoints 😁

i can remember break point but fast or slow spots. I have to say tho ive scared some sweepers wit a scream or two. Question if im throwing should i call line because sometimes my sweepers dont sweep but also i think get confused. Do they listen to the person in the house or the hack

    • @CurlUpWithJamie
      @CurlUpWithJamie  Před 3 lety

I would say for the first couple feet after you let go of the rock, the sweepers could listen to you (the thrower) because you have a good idea of what you just did to the rock. After that the tho, the person in the house has the best vantage point and the sweepers should listen to them.
