Do Turkey Feathers Stop Shotgun Ammo? TSS & Lead Tested

  • Are turkey feathers really bulletproof? Will they stop or slow down shotgun pellets? I tested Winchester Long Beard XR lead and Remington Premier TSS turkey ammo against a thick wall of turkey feathers to see if the feathers reduced ballistics gel penetration. I also pattern tested both turkey hunting loads against each other to see how they compared and what their performance looked like.

    Can you effectively kill turkeys with body shots or will the feathers inhibit the pellets? The data from this test makes it very obvious the impact that feathers have and under what conditions body shots may be effective. These ammos are often compared to Federal premium TSS, BOSS Tom TSS, APEX TSS, HEVI TSS, and more. #turkeyhunting #turkeyhunter

    I still aim right below the waddles. Less of a moving target vs. the head. Better pattern placement and disbursement in my opinion too.

    Body shots work, but only when the bird is quartering away, and you hit them in the upper back and ribs. Shot goes directly to the vitals. Learned this on longer shots, where I forgot to compensate for drop by aiming for the eyeball.

      I've done this on a few ambush running away shots. Shot went exactly where you described. Rolled them. Since I use #4's penetration was great with less shot to pick out.

    Hi George! Honestly, the circles and the little marks don’t really help, if anything they’re a bit distracting. I could always see the shot patterns just fine before. This was a genius test! Keep up the great work, god bless you, and go get ‘em on the high plains!

    Thanks! Sorry for not hitting the sub button before. Been watching for weeks now! Great content as always! Can you perform this turkey feather test with #7’s with APEX and small town blend Apex!

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think the percentage loss to feathers would stay the same. The total penetration would just increase alot. I did a video testing #7 vs. #9 TSS and you can see the difference at 40 and 60 yards. That would give you a good feel for how the two compared. Then just subtract 15% penetration for body shots.

    Great video George! Also it adds up why guys hit but don’t kill the turkey at longer ranges perhaps especially if turkey moves at critical moment of firing where vitals are well protected

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  Před 4 měsíci

      Yea, long range body shots are anything but a sure thing, and few people have the patterns needed to consistently take birds down with head shots at long range as well. We should never rely on lucky shots. Know thy pattern.

    Back in the 70’s my uncle and grandfather used a double barrel full choke and modified choke full would be #5 or #6 shot modified #2 shot . The reason for shooting them in the body was if the bird within 15 yards he was getting the modified barrel because the full was too tight of a pattern but if the bird was over 60 yards it was getting both barrels, that’s why people were shooting them in the body. Then in the 80’s my uncle bought a BPS first shot was #6 shot backed with #4 second shot. Both gun were in 12 gauge and grandpa always said if you get the money and felt man enough get a 10 gauge double barrel. Now I will not spend that much money on tss another reason why would anyone want to pick them little pellets out of their food ✌🏻👍🇺🇸

      @@TheNewHuntersGuide Just crazy on the shot size limit. Dead is dead. If you use body shots with #2/s, they penetrate and you have less shot pick out. #2 3 inch was my go to field round in Alaska. Penetrate through a large snow shoe and grouse. Never ever had to chew lead.

    Was doing some ammo research and it seems federal and hevi shot have come together to create a “premium Hevi bismuth.” Not sure if it’s a marketing move, or if it’s something different, or if I’m just crazy and it’s hevi bismuth in a new box lol. Would love to see it patterned up against some Warchief!!!

      you are comparing apples and oranges, Wild Turkeys are much larger than almost all other game birds. I’m not saying it can’t be done but why promote it? As a turkey guide for 20 plus years I’ve seen almost everything that can happen with clients and body shooting, unless super close range, never turns out well.
