    United keeps getting better and better, especially in coach. They are now my preferred airline. But their Polaris product is the best. The Polaris lounges are on par with the best in the world. Back in the U.S., Delta and American have some catching up to do.

    People bash on UA a lot, but I have to say their are my preferred (*A) carrier for EU-West Coast flights. Two decent meals and an adequate snack mid-flight. Decent enough complementary alcohol choices (I love their IPA's on offer), IFE has plenty of things to choose from, cabin crews usually range from ok to great, etc. Funny thing is that I try to avoid them for the EU - Eastcoast/midWest flights. Those seem to be scaled down massively compared to their West Coast service somehow...

    • @brandonbarfield6164
      @brandonbarfield6164 Před 4 lety +3

      You're correct - The inflight service from IAH/ORD/IAD/EWR-TATL and vice versa is pared down. There would be no snack and the breakfast service would only be a small croissant and yogurt. From the West Coast - they definitely put out a competitive product.

    The initial climb could have felt steeper because of the effect of sitting at the rear of the airplane, or it could have been because taking off from that particular runway at SFO requires a steep climb because there's a mountain right ahead to ascend over.

They did not want to fly the 767 perhaps to save money however they lost anyway because they had to eventually stop for fuel. Thai happens to us we had to stop for fuel in Bangor coming frout ms pain and we stopped in Bangor .

    Thank,s a lot for sharing!! Really I,ve enjoyed this trip-report. Yes. Still UNITED is an US-American airline. And your breakfast was a typically US-American breakfast table too. It,s not everyone,s breakfast-style. Last summer I was flown Premium-Economy onboard a Condor (DE) short-haul European flight from DUS to PMI. The plane was a Boeing 757-300. I was sitting in Row 1, Seat A and my parents behind me in Row 2, A & B. Besides a free middle-seat, a pillow and blanked, small ear-phones, we,ve received a breakfast too. But onboard a German holiday airline I,ve never expected a British-style breakfast, which consisted of two sausages, very spicy scrambled-eggs, a Strawberry-Yoghurt and a yummy very sweet mouse-cake. I for myself liked and enjoyed my breakfast. My dad too but unfortunately my mother isn,t a friend of such a hot breakfast-type early in the morning. Thank Good she brought her own little breakfast onboard. A salty bretzel. But of course she enjoyed two cups of coffee and a cub of water onboard. I had choose 2 orange-juice cubs.

    7:00 I like watching the wing go from convex looking with the tip pointed down to the airflow changing the shape of the wing to be concave and the tip pointed upward. VERY cool to see this flex. The initial climb out of SFO when you're taking off to the Northwest is steeper and faster because of the mountains that are in close proximity to the airport, there is also some noise abatement restrictons in that area, so the faster and quicker they can take off the better, with less noise. USUALLY planes land on that runway from the south and most take offs are from the West to East which also goes steep over the flight path of OAK north south approach.

    Great review as always! I recently flew from EWR to MXP (Newark to Milano Malpensa) onboard a brand new 777-300ER, and I had a very different experience. I was in seat 41A, and apart from the touch-screen infotainment system being a pain to use as it was very slow, the seat felt extremely crammed and I got really bad back pain around 30 minutes into the flight due to the lack of back support that the seat gave me - note I'm an athletic 18 year old, I shouldn't have back pain :) The seat was uncomfortable, but again, it felt very narrow and crammed. As beautiful and clean as the cabin was, the seat itself I felt was much tighter that the seats on the older 777-200s that United uses, in fact, for this route they usually use the 200 but due to some technical issue, they supplied us with a 300ER. Just wanted to share this as I was curious that everyone had such a different experience to me!

    7:30 Yeah that looks like about 20 degrees of pitch in that initial climb, if not a little more, which is very steep for a heavy, almost at the Orange County takeoff level. I’ve seen what 20+ degree takeoffs look like in GeoFS and from the outside they look like they’re literally rocketing out of the airport and pulling an air show stunt.
    More on topic, though, I am pretty sure planes have to rotate very early and take off very steeply from the 28 runways at SFO because if you look down the path the 28 runways go, you will see that almost immediately past the end of the 28 runway threshold (the 10 end) there is high terrain everywhere. Almost all of those areas are highly developed and lots of people live on those hills (part of Daly City and SSF). Not to mention San Bruno Mountain is 1,300 feet high, has several important Bay Area radio / weather / communication towers on its peak, and is immediately to the right of you as you take off from the 28s. Then the high terrain drops off at the Pacific Ocean (just north of Pacifica) in the form of high sea cliffs and that’s when your plane is now above the ocean. This sort of reminds me of the high terrain you can see immediately beyond the end of San Diego Airport’s runway, which also goes over a highly developed area and straight towards the Pacific. I am not an expert on takeoff-related calculations, but I would think that pilots would want to play it safe by climbing as quickly as they can. At SFO, in particular, they have to compensate for the aforementioned high terrain, so they intentionally climb steeper than normal on the 28s. I believe that San Diego Airport Runway 27 takeoffs would be very steep as well for similar reasons.

    • @brianlau172
      @brianlau172 Před 3 lety +1

      And also St. Maarten’s runway. Pilots seem to pull up extremely hard and make super sharp steep turns immediately off of it because there are very tall mountains past the end of the runway if you look straight down it (of course when the takeoff roll is going away from the famous beach which is the most common pattern).

    Pilots West to east is that a shorter route than east to west or at this time of the year you had a tail wind and fly this route specifically

    • @HeathrowFlyerTakeoff

      Not a pilot here - but, there is more tail wind at this time of the year. As a result, east to west is longer and west to east is shorter 👍

    In general US airports need improvements, but US carriers are not actually bad at all. My family took the 17-hour flight from Singapore to Los Angeles on a United B787, and it was pretty smooth. Advantages of flying US carriers on international routes: extra legroom and frequent serving of refreshments.

    I recently flew (in December) SFO-LHR-SFO, and I was quite impressed by the flight. The in-flight service was pretty good, food was very tasty. In fact, I got cooked oatmeal with Fruits (with no added sugar) for my Breakfast, prior to landing at LHR. The call button got a response within 30 seconds, and automatically they come with water. The in-flight crew was smiling all the time.
    I will definitely take United when flying to Europe, from now on. They were pretty good -- far better than my recent Emirates experience (SFO-DXB-JNB-CPT-DXB-SFO).

      That is probably an old 777G/M that eventually are planning to retire. Thats why United hasn't bothered to install video system. No need to spend money on something that eventually will be replaced with newer aircrafts.

    • @justincui
      @justincui Před 4 lety +5

      The complaints about United puting 3-4-3 were exxagerated. United was actually pretty late to the game in terms of densifying coach. In fact, United introduced 3-4-3 at the same time as Qatar Airways. ANA & Air New Zealand also have 3-4-3. In short, United doesn't deserve criticism for putting in one more seat per row because so many other airlines have done the same before United

    • @waikelehawaii4409
      @waikelehawaii4409 Před 4 lety +1

      That is Oakland International Airport (OAK). It is just across the Bay from SFO. The aircraft took off flying away from OAK then after making a U-turn towards Germany, overflew San Francisco and OAK. This was a very beautiful day and departure. Usually, this flight would have taken off in the opposite direction (straight over the OAK area) and none of the beautiful city views would have been captured.
